믿는 사람들은 성지순례에 관심이 많다. 그들은 예수님의 태어나서 사시고 사역한 장소를 보기 원한다. 성도들은 또 출애굽 여정과 사도들의 전도 여정에 관심이 있다. 본문은 예수님에 대한 사람들의 관심을 보여 주고 있다.
유대인들의 큰 무리가 예수님이 예루살렘에 계신 줄을 알고 왔다(9). 성경에 등장하는 유대인들은 예수님과 관련하여 두 종류가 있다. 예수님을 믿지 않는 유대인들이 있다. 그들은 주님을 미워하고 박해한다. 그들은 예수님의 사역과 가르침을 거부한다. 지금도 주를 믿지 않는 사람들이 많다. 그들은 예수님과 가르침에 반응도 관심도 없다. 하지만 믿는 유대인들도 있다. 그들은 예수님을 하나님의 아들 그리스도 구주 믿는다. 그들은 주님의 사역을 보고 놀라면서 하나님께 영광을 돌린다. 그들은 주님의 말씀을 듣고 배운다. 본문의 유대인들은 주로 믿는 유대인들이다. 오늘 우리는 예수님을 하나님의 아들 그리스도 구주로 믿는다. 우리는 주님께 경배하고 찬양한다. 우리는 주님의 기적을 믿고 주님께 영광을 돌린다. 우리는 주님의 가르침을 듣고 배운다.
예수님은 끊임 없는 관심의 대상이었다. 예수님이 태어나실 때에 유대인들과 헤롯 왕은 큰 관심을 가졌다. 사람들은 예수님의 사역에 많은 관심이 있었다. 사람들은 예수님이 행하는 표적과 가르침에 관심이 많았다. 그래서 수많은 사람들이 모였다. 사람들은 예수님이 불치병과 장애를 치유하고, 죽은 자를 살리고, 물 위를 걷고, 귀신을 쫓아내는 것에 관심을 가졌다. 우리 역시 믿음으로 주님이 행하신 기적과 가르침에 관심이 많다. 유명한 연예인이 오면 많은 사람들이 모인다. 유대인들은 예수님께 많은 관심을 가졌다. 그들은 예수님을 보기 위해서 예루살렘에 모였다.
유대인들은 예수님과 함께 나사로도 보기를 원했다. 왜냐하면 나사로는 죽었다가 살아 났기 때문이다. 예수님은 무덤에 있는 죽은 나사로를 살렸다. 죽은 사람이 4일 만에 살아났다. 이것은 매우 신기하고 초자연적인 일이다. 그래서 유대인들은 나사로를 보기 원했다. 베드로 사도가 못 걷는 사람을 주님의 이름으로 고쳤다. 사람들은 매우 신기하게 여겼다. 수많은 사람들이 관심을 갖고 모였다.
주님이 행하신 표적은 메시야라는 증거다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들 구주로서 그런 능력을 보이신 것이다. 유대인들은 예수님을 구주로 믿고 순종해야 했다. 그들은 예수님을 찬양하고 경배하고 전해야 했다. 그들은 예수님이 성경에 예언된 그리스도임을 전해서 사람들이 믿게 해야 했다. 그것이 그들이 해야 할 본분이다. 그런데 그들은 그렇게 하지 않았다. 그들은 예수님을 죽이려고 노력했다. 그들은 불신앙과 더불어 악을 행했다. 그것은 하나님 앞에서 큰 죄다.
대제사장들은 예수님과 함께 나사로까지 죽이려고 했다. 그들은 왜 나사로까지 죽이려고 했을까요. 누군가가 어떤 사람을 미워하면 그 주변 사람들도 미워한다. 바아사가 여로보암 왕의 아들을 죽일 때에, 그의 가족, 친구, 친척을 다 죽였다. 유대인들이 나사로를 죽이려고 한 것은 예수님을 시기하기 때문이다. 그들은 주님을 사랑하지 않았다. 그들은 주님께 은총을 입은 사람까지 죽이려고 한다. 그들은 주님이 하신 사역을 믿고 찬양했어야 했다. 그들은 나사로를 보고 기뻐하고 감사하고 축하하고 하나님께 영광을 돌려야 했다. 사실 가족 중에 한 사람이 치유를 받았다면 그것은 감사할 일이고 축하할 일이다.
많은 사람들이 나사로 때문에 예수님을 믿었다. 그것이 나사로까지 죽이려고 하는 이유다. 이것이 얼마나 어리석고 불행한 일인가. 우리는 믿음의 관점에서 본다. 그들의 불신앙적인 행위는 이해하기 어려운 일이다. 좋아해야 할 일을 싫어하는 사람들이 있다. 그것은 시기때문이다. 어떤 집 자녀가 명문대에 합격했다. 그것은 축하할 일이다. 하지만 몹시 싫어하는 사람들도 있다. 그 이유는 시기심과 경쟁심 때문이다.
대제사장들은 예수님을 시기한 나머지 나사로까지 없애려고 한 것이다. 그들은 악에 악을 더하고 있다. 주님이 행하신 기적은 믿음의 초석이다. 우리는 주님이 행하신 기적을 듣고 믿는다. 동시에 우리는 사람들에게 그것을 전한다. 왜냐하면 사람들이 기적의 주님을 믿고 구원받게 하기 위해서다. 그런데 유대인들은 반대로 행한다. 그들은 많은 사람들이 예수님을 믿는 것을 싫어한다. 우리는 주 예수를 믿음으로 구원받았다. 우리는 그 구원의 주님을 사랑하고 전해야 한다. 우리는 많은 사람들이 예수님의 기적과 말씀에 관심을 갖게 해야 한다. 그래서 많은 사람들이 믿고 구원받게 해야 한다. 그것이 우리의 사명이기 때문이다.
People’s Interests (John 12:9-11)
Believers are interested in the Holy Land Pilgrimages. They want to know the place where Jesus was born, where he lived and did ministry. They are also interested in the journey of Exodus and the apostles’ evangelism journey. Today’s passage shows people’s interest in Jesus.
A large crowd of Jews came to Jerusalem because they thought he would be there (v.9). In the Bible, there are two types of Jews. First, there were the unbelieving Jews. They hated and persecuted the Lord Jesus. They reject Jesus’ ministry and teachings. Even today, there are those who do not believe in Jesus. They have no reactions to or interests in Jesus’ teachings. On the other hand, there were the believing Jews. They believed in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. They saw Jesus’ ministry and were amazed, and gave glory to God. They listened to Jesus and learned his word. The Jews in today’s passage were the ones who believed. Today, we believe in Jesus as Christ the Son of God, and worship and praise him. We believe in His miracles and give Him glory. We listen to the Lord’s teachings and learn them.
Jesus was continuously the center of people’s attention. When Jesus was born, King Herod and the Jews took great interest in Him. During his ministry, many people sought him. They were interested in his miracles, so throngs of people gathered. They were interested in Jesus’ healing of disabilities and incurable illnesses, raising of the dead, walking on the water, and driving out demons. We are also greatly interested in the Lord’s miracles and teachings. When a famous celebrity comes to the area, people are interested in seeing them. To the Jews, Jesus was the figure of great significance. They came all the way to Jerusalem to see Jesus.
The Jews also wanted to see Lazarus, because they heard the news that he was dead and was raised to life. Jesus raised the dead Lazarus, who was in a tomb. A dead man was raised to life in four days. This was a mind-blowing and supernatural event. Therefore, they wanted to also see Lazarus. When Peter healed a lame man, people were fascinated and gathered around him.
The miracles Jesus performed were evidence that he was the Messiah. He displayed his power as the Savior and the Son of God. The Jews had to believe in Jesus as the Savior and obey him. They had to praise, worship, and spread words about him. They had to preach Christ, who was prophesied about in the Scriptures, and lead people to believe in him. That was their duty. But instead, they tried to kill him. They did evil in their unbelief. This is a huge sin before God.
The chief priests now planned to kill Lazarus, along with Jesus. Why was that? When a person hates someone, they may also hate people related to them. When Baasha killed King Jeroboam’s son, he also killed his family, friends, and relatives. The Jews tried to kill Lazarus because they envied Jesus. They did not love him. And they tried to kill someone who received the Lord’s favor. They had to believe in his ministry and praise God. They had to congratulate, give thanks, be joyful, and give glory to God at the grace given to Lazarus. It should have been just as when their own family member is healed from a severe illness–they should have given thanks to God and been happy for the family.
Many people believed in Jesus because of Lazarus. That was their reason for wanting to kill Lazarus. What a foolish and unfortunate thing. We see from the perspective of faith. And it is difficult to understand their deeds of unbelief. There are people who are displeased in situations when they should rejoice. This usually is the case because of envy. When someone else’s child is accepted to a prestigious university, it is something to be happy about. But there are people who are not pleased with it, because of envy and competitiveness.
Because of envy, the chief priests tried to get rid of Lazarus. They were heaping sin upon sin. The miracles of Jesus are the faith’s cornerstone. We hear about the Lord’s miracles and believe. And we spread what we heard and believed to others so that others may also believe in the Lord and be saved. But the unbelieving Jews did the opposite. They did not like that many people believed in Jesus. We believed in Jesus our Lord and were saved. We must love the Lord of deliverance and tell others about him, leading others to be interested in Jesus’ miracles and word. And we should lead them to salvation, for this is our calling.
