왕정시대가 있었다. 이스라엘 역사도 마찬가지다. 이스라엘에는 사사시대가 있었다. 그 때에는 사사들이 통치했다. 그 이후에 왕정시대가 있었다. 통치권이 사사에서 왕으로 이동했다. 다윗이 왕이 되면서 왕정시대가 자리잡게 되었다. 오늘 본문은 예수님이 이스라엘 왕으로 오신 것을 말한다.
유월절에 온 큰 무리가 예수님이 예루살렘으로 오신다는 소식을 들었다(12). 유월절에는 전국에서 수많은 사람들이 예루살렘에 모였다. 명절에 모인 많은 사람들이 예수님에 대해서 들었다. 그리고 그들은 예수님을 영접하고 환영했다. 우리는 성경에서 예수님에 관해서 듣는다. 우리는 듣고 믿는다. 믿음은 들음에서 난다(롬 10:17). 우리의 믿음이 생기고 성장하기 위해서는 주님의 말씀을 들어야 한다. 우리는 성경에서 그리스도 예수에 대해서 듣게 된다. 우리는 성경을 부지런히 읽고, 배우고, 순종함으로 믿음으로 충만하게 된다.
많은 사람들은 종려나무 가지를 들고 예루살렘에 입성하는 예수님을 맞이했다(13). 종려나무는 승리와 영광을 상징한다. 예수님은 승리와 영광의 주님이다. 예수님은 십자가로 승리했다. 주님은 십자가와 부활을 통해서 대적인 죄와 사망의 세력을 격파했다. 주님은 승리와 함께 부활의 영광에 이르렀다. 우리는 승리와 영광의 주님을 믿음으로 속죄함과 부활의 영광을 얻는다. 사람들은 외쳤다. “호산나 찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 이 곧 이스라엘의 왕이시여” 호산나는 ‘제발 구원해 주십시오. 구원을 간청합니다. 지금 우리를 구원해 주소서’라는 의미다. 예수님만이 구원자다. 그래서 우리는 ‘주여, 지금 우리를 구원해 주십시오. 주여, 우리를 모든 곤경에서 건져 주십시오. 우리는 구원하시는 주님을 찬양합니다’라고 말할 수 있다.
예수님은 주의 이름으로 오셨다. 예수님은 만주의 주시다. 예수님은 만물의 주, 모든 사람의 주, 구원의 주시다. 만물은 주이신 예수님께 복종해야 한다. 우리 역시 주님에게 온전히 복종해야 한다. 주이신 예수님은 이스라엘 왕이다. 예수님은 유대인의 왕이요, 만왕의 왕이다. 주님은 나의 왕, 나의 구원자다. 왕이신 예수님이 다스린다. 유대인들은 자기들의 왕으로 오신 예수님을 영접하고, 경배하고, 섬겨야 했다. 하지만 그들은 영접하지 않고 배신했다. 우리는 왕이신 예수님을 섬기고 경배하고 순종해야 한다. 주님의 통치가 나의 마음, 생각, 삶, 가정, 교회에 있어야 한다. 주님의 통치를 벗어나면 왕을 반역하는 것이다. 겸손한 순종이 왕이신 주 예수님을 영화롭게 한다.
예수님은 어린 나귀를 타고 입성했다(14). 이것은 성경(슥 9:9)을 성취하는 것이다(15). 예수님은 성경대로 사셨다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지께 온전히 순종했다. 우리는 순종의 주님을 본받아야 한다. 우리는 주님처럼 성경대로 살아야 한다. 우리는 주님의 교훈과 계명을 순종해야 한다. 그것이 참 믿음의 길이기 때문이다. 예수님은 나귀 새끼를 타셨다. 가장 존귀하신 만왕의 왕께서 낮은 자리에 섰다. 예수님은 겸손의 왕이다. 우리도 주님처럼 겸손해야 한다. 우리는 낮은 자리에 서야 한다. 교만은 예수님의 마음이 아니다. 겸손한 마음이 주님의 마음이다.
제자들은 처음에 사람들이 종려나무 가지를 들고 예수님을 환영하는 일을 깨닫지 못했다(16). 그들은 예수님이 부활하신 후에 그 의미를 알았다. 제자들은 성경에 기록된대로 예수님에게 이루어진 것을 알게 되었다. 성경은 예수님에 대한 기록이다. 성경은 예수님을 증거한다. 우리는 성경을 읽으면서 예수님을 배우게 된다. 우리는 성경에서 도덕교훈이나 세상지식을 배우지 않는다. 우리는 생명이요 구주이신 예수님을 성경에서 배운다. 그리스도 예수님이 없는 성경은 무의미하다. 우리는 쉽게 성경을 알 수 없다. 그래서 우리는 매일 성경을 읽어야 한다. 우리는 성경을 반복해서 읽으면서 더 잘 알 수 있다.
사람들은 예수님이 나사로를 살렸다고 증거했다(17). 그들은 나사로를 살리는 것을 직접 보았다. 그들은 목격자요 증인이다. 그들의 말을 들은 사람들이 예수님을 환영했다. 우리 역시 예수님의 증인이다. 우리는 예수님의 증인들의 증거를 믿고 전하는 증인이다. 그래서 우리는 예수님을 전하고 증거해야 한다. 사람들은 예수님이 행하신 표적을 듣고 예수님을 환영했다(18). 듣는 것은 믿음의 통로다. 우리는 예수님에 대해서 많이 듣고 전해야 한다. 듣지 않으면 믿음은 발생하지 않는다. 바리새인들은 온 세상이 예수님을 따르는 것을 보고 낙담했다(19). 이들은 주님의 대적들이다. 그들은 하나님 앞에서 무익하고 악한 일을 하고 있다. 온 세상은 만왕의 왕이요 만주의 주이신 예수님을 따라야 한다. 우리 역시 왕이신 주님을 따르고 순종해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님을 영화롭고 기쁘게 해야 한다.
The King of Israel (John 12:12-19)
Israel had the period of the Judges. At the time, judges ruled over Israel. After this period, there was the Age of Monarchy, during which the ruling power transitioned from judges to kings. As David became a king, the Age of Monarchy began to get established. Today’s passage talks about Jesus coming as the King.
On Passover, a great crowd of people heard the news that Jesus will be coming to Jerusalem (v.12). So many people gathered in Jerusalem from all over the place. The people who came to the Passover festival heard about Jesus. And they received and welcomed him. We hear about Jesus through the Bible. We hear and believe. Faith comes from hearing (Romans 10:17). For our faith to develop and grow, we must hear the Word. And we hear about Christ Jesus from the Bible. We become filled with faith by diligently reading, learning, and obeying the Word.
Many people welcomed Jesus, who entered Jerusalem, with palm branches (v.13). Palm branches symbolize victory and glory. Jesus is the Lord of victory and glory. Jesus achieved victory through the cross. Through the cross and the resurrection, Jesus triumphed over the enemy, the power of sin and death. Through the victory, he entered into the glory of the resurrection. We, too, received the glory of forgiveness and resurrection by believing in the Lord of victory and glory. People shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel!” “Hosanna” means “Please save us. We ask for deliverance. May the Lord save us!” Only Jesus is the Savior and thus we say, “Lord, please save us now. Lord, deliver us from all our troubles. We praise the Lord who saves.”
Jesus came in the name of the Lord. He is the Lord of lords. He is the Lord of All, including all people, and of salvation. All things must submit to Jesus, who is the Lord. We also must obey the Lord completely. Jesus, who is the Lord, is the King of Israel. Jesus is the King of the Jews and the King of kings. Jesus is our Lord and the One who saves. Jesus the King reigns. The Jews had to welcome, worship, and serve the Lord who came as their King. However, they did not welcome him; instead, they betrayed him. We ought to serve, worship, and obey Jesus the King. The Lord’s reign must be in our hearts, thoughts, lives, families, and the church. Wandering away from the Lord’s reign is rebellion against the King. Humble obedience glorifies the Lord Jesus.
Jesus entered Jerusalem on a young donkey (v.14). This is the fulfillment of the Scripture (Zechariah 9:9) (v.15). Jesus lived according to the Scriptures. He obeyed the Father flawlessly. We must follow the example of the Lord of Obedience, living according to the Scriptures. We must obey the Lord’s teachings and commands. For this is the true way of faith. Moreover, Jesus rode a colt. The most dignified King of kings humbled himself. He is the King of humility. We also must be humble like the Lord. We should lower ourselves. Arrogance is not the heart of Jesus. A humble heart is the heart of the Lord.
The disciples did not understand the people’s actions (v.16). Only after Jesus was glorified did they understand. They understood then that everything happened to Jesus just as it was written in the Scriptures. The Scripture is about Jesus. It testifies about Jesus. We learn about Jesus through reading the Bible. We do not learn moral teachings or worldly knowledge from the Bible. We learn about Jesus, who is the Life and the Savior, through the Bible. The Bible without Christ Jesus is meaningless. Further, understanding the Bible is not simple. Therefore, we must read it daily. And when we read it repeatedly, our understanding grows.
People spread the word that Jesus raised Lazarus (v.17). They witnessed the event. They were eyewitnesses. And those who heard about it welcomed Jesus. Likewise, we are Jesus’ witnesses. We believe in the eyewitness accounts and share them with others. We should preach and bear witness to Jesus. People heard about the miracles Jesus performed and welcomed him (v.18). Hearing is the path of faith. We must hear a lot about Jesus and preach him. If we do not hear, faith cannot develop. The Pharisees saw that the whole world went after Jesus and realized that the public’s momentum toward him was becoming irreversible (V.19). They were opponents of Christ. They were doing futile and evil work in the sight of God. The world rightly ought to follow Jesus, the Lord of lords and the King of kings. We also ought to follow and obey him, thus pleasing and glorifying him.
