농부가 사과 씨를 심는다. 그 씨는 땅 속에서 썩으면서 싹을 내고 자라서 열매를 맺는다. 믿는 자의 삶은 주 안에서 한 말의 밀과 같다. 그리스도인의 삶은 열매와 관련되어 있다. 열매를 맺는 삶이 그리스도인의 삶이다. 오늘 본문은 그러한 교훈을 준다.
유월절에 이스라엘과 여러 나라에서 많은 사람들이 예루살렘에 모였다. 그들은 하나님께 예배를 드리고 명절을 지켰다. 마찬가지로 성탄절과 부활절에는 더 많은 사람들이 교회에 나온다. 평소에 교회에 출석하지 않는 사람들도 나와서 예배드린다. 명절에 온 사람들 중에 헬라인들도 있었다(20). 복음은 만민의 복음이다. 복음은 유대인들로부터 시작해서 온 세상에 퍼졌다. 헬라인들은 예수님에 관해서 들었다. 그들은 듣고 주님을 만나기를 원했다(21). 주의 복음은 듣는 자에게 역사한다. 그래서 복음을 전하는 것이 중요하다. 들은 사람들은 또 다른 사람에게 전도한다. 헬라인들은 12제자 중에 한 사람인 빌립에게 갔다. 그들은 빌립에게 예수님을 보기를 원한다고 말했다. 오늘 우리는 예배, 말씀, 기도, 찬양, 믿음, 성령으로 주를 만난다.
빌립은 안드레에게 말했다. 이 둘은 예수님께 말했다. 그들은 예수님을 만나게 하는 다리 역할을 했다. 오늘도 예수님을 만나고 찾기 위해서는 전도가 필요하다. 사람들이 예수님을 만나게 하는 다리 역할이 제자들에게 주어졌다. 우리는 그러한 사명을 가지고 전도해야 한다. 복음전도는 구원과 영생의 통로와 같다. 사람들은 전하지 않으면 들을 수 없다. 사람들은 듣지 못하면 구원 받지 못한다. 우리는 사람들을 구원의 주님께 인도하는 사명자들이다. 우리는 주어진 사명에 충실해야 한다.
23-24절은 예수님의 응답이다. 예수님은 헬라인들이 자기를 보기를 원한다는 말을 들었다. 주님은 그 말을 듣고 반응했다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들 주 예수 그리스도다. 예수님은 사람을 구원하려고 오셨다. 예수님은 만민의 구원자다. 예수님은 유대인의 구원자다. 동시에 주님은 이방인들의 구원자다. 예수님은 구원자로서 십자가 위에서 죽으셨다. 헬라인들 역시 구원 받을 대상이다. 주의 구원이 헬라인들에게 임하는 것은 주님의 영광이다. 주님은 그들을 구원하시려고 오셨다. 그래서 예수님은 그들이 주를 믿음으로 찾는 것에 반응한다. 하나님의 아들이신 예수님은 사람의 아들로 사셨다. 주님은 헬라인들이 주를 찾고 구원 받는 것은 주님이 영광을 받으시는 일이라고 말한다(23). 온 세상에 주의 복음이 전해져서 많은 사람들이 믿는 것은 주님의 영광이다. 주님은 믿음을 통해서 영광을 받으신다. 우리가 믿음을 때에 주님은 영광을 받으신다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 않으면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라”(24). 주님은 씨는 흙 속에서 죽어야 열매를 맺는 다고 말한다. 주님은 씨가 죽지 않으면 열매를 맺지 못한다고 말한다. 씨가 죽는 것은 무슨 의미인가. 그것은 십자가의 예수님을 통해서 해석된다. 씨는 주님의 말씀을 가리킨다(마 13장). 땅은 사람의 마음을 의미한다. 예수님은 하나님 말씀을 마음으로부터 순종했다. 십자가는 말씀을 순종한 결과다. 주님은 십자가에 죽으시기까지 하나님 말씀을 순종했다. 그 결과 주님은 많은 열매를 맺었다. 주님은 복음을 통해서 온 세상에서 열매를 맺는다.
우리 역시 마찬가지다. 우리는 마음의 밭에 주의 말씀의 씨를 심는다. 마음에 심어진 씨는 열매를 맺어야 한다. 열매는 주님처럼 순종을 통해서 나타난다. 주의 말씀을 순종하지 않으면 열매는 맺지 못한다. 우리는 말씀을 순종하면서 주의 뜻대로 산다. 우리는 순종을 통해서 주님을 영화롭게 한다. 우리는 순종을 통해서 믿음의 사람으로 굳게 선다. 우리는 순종을 통해서 그리스도인으로 성장한다. 우리는 순종을 통해서 그리스도의 증인이 되는 삶을 산다. 우리는 순종을 통해서 옛 사람, 땅에 속한 지체가 죽는다(골 3:5). 우리의 마음에 있는 주의 말씀을 순종할 때에 열매를 맺는다. 따라서 순종이 없는 믿음은 열매 없는 믿음이다. 순종의 사람은 많은 열매를 맺는다(막 4:20). 주님은 우리가 열매를 맺기 원하신다. 우리는 열매를 맺기 위해서 주의 말씀을 읽고, 배우고, 순종해야 한다. 많은 순종은 많은 열매를 맺는다. 우리는 이것을 기억해야 한다. 순종을 통해서 많은 열매를 맺고 주의 은총과 복을 받아서 누리기를 주님의 이름으로 바란다.
A Kernel of Wheat (John 12:20-24)
A farmer sows an apple seed. The seed dies in the soil, sprouts, and grows to bear fruits. The life of believers is like a kernel of wheat in the Lord. Fruit is a part of a Christian life. Life that bears fruit is the life of a Christian. Today’s passage teaches us this.
On Passover, many people from Israel and other countries came to Jerusalem. They worshiped God and celebrated the holiday. Similarly, many people come to church on Christmas and Easter, including those who may not come to church regularly. Among the people who came to Jerusalem were the Greeks (v.20). The gospel is the gospel of all people. The gospel spread, beginning from the Jews, to the entire world. The Greeks heard about Jesus and wanted to see him (v.21). The gospel works in the people who hear it. Therefore, it is so important to preach the gospel. Those who hear it spread it to others. A person among the Greeks went to Philip and told him they would like to see Jesus. Today, we meet Jesus through worship, the Word of God, prayer, praise, faith, and the Holy Spirit.
Philip in turn told Andrew. And they went and told Jesus. They were like a bridge that connected Jesus to others. Even today, evangelism is necessary for people to meet and find Jesus. The disciples were given a role of bridge, connecting Jesus to people. We should preach the Word to others with this calling. Preaching the gospel is like a path to salvation and eternal life. Without someone preaching, people cannot hear. And if people do not hear, they cannot be saved. We are those called to guide people to the Lord of salvation. We must be faithful to this mission.
Verses 23-24 are Jesus’ response. Jesus heard that the Greeks wanted to see him. And he responded. Jesus is the Son of God and Christ the Lord. Jesus came to save the people. He is the Savior of All. He is the Savior of the Jews. At the same time, he is the Savior of the Gentiles. As the Savior, he died on the cross. The Greeks needed to be saved just like everyone else. Salvation being granted to the Greeks is the glory of the Lord. Jesus came to save them. So he responded to the people seeking to meet him with faith. Jesus, the Son of God, lived as a son of man. He says that he is glorified when the Greeks seek him and are saved (v.23). It is the glory of God when the gospel of the Lord is preached all over the world, leading people to believe. The Lord is glorified through faith. When we believe, the Lord is glorified.
Jesus says, “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds” (v.24). Jesus says that a seed must die in the ground to bear fruit. If it does not die, it cannot bear fruit. What does it mean for a seed to die? It can be interpreted through Jesus. Seed refers to the Word of God (Matthew 13). The ground refers to people’s hearts. Jesus obeyed the Word of God from his heart. Cross is the result of obeying the Word. Jesus obeyed the Word of God even to death. As a result, he bore much fruit. Through the gospel, the whole world bears fruit.
Likewise, we sow the Word of God in our soil of heart. The seed that has been sown in our heart must bear fruit. Fruit is shown through obedience, just as Jesus obeyed. Without obedience to the Word of God, we cannot bear fruit. As we obey the Word, we live according to His will. Through obedience, we glorify the Lord. Through obedience, we live firmly and courageously as believers. We grow into Christians through obedience. We become Christ’s witnesses through obedience. Our old self that is of the world dies through our obedience (Colossians 3:5). When we obey the Word that is in our hearts, we bear fruit. Therefore, faith without obedience is one without fruit. A person of faith bears much fruit (Mark 4:20). The Lord wants us to bear fruit. To bear fruit, we ought to read the Bible, learn it, and obey it. Much obedience brings about much fruit. We must remember this. I pray in the name of the Lord that you bear much fruit through obedience, and receive and enjoy the Lord’s gifts and blessings.
