사도 요한의 직업은 어부였다. 예수님은 요한을 제자로 부르셨다. 그는 3년 동안 예수님을 따랐다. 그는 주님으로부터 배우며 주를 섬겼다. 요한은 주님의 사랑 받는 제자였다. 그는 요한복음과 요한서신을 썼다. 요한은 지금 주님과 함께 천국에 있다. 본문은 예수님을 따르며 섬기는 것에 말한다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “자기 생명을 사랑하는 자는 잃어버릴 것이요 이 세상에서 자기 생명을 미워하는 자는 영생하도록 보전하리라”(25). 우리는 그 어떤 것도 잃어버리는 것을 원하지 않는다. 특히 우리는 소중한 것은 절대로 잃어버리면 안된다고 생각한다. 우리는 돈을 잃어버리는 것은 큰 일이라고 생각한다. 큰 돈을 사기 당한 사람은 몹시 괴로워 한다. 사람들은 자기 자녀를 잃어버리는 것은 있을 수 없는 일이라고 생각한다. 예수님은 생명을 잃어버리지 않는 길을 제시한다.
생명은 하나다. 생명은 소중하다. 사람들은 생명보다 귀한 것은 없다고 생각한다. 사람들은 생명은 금보다 귀하고, 그 어떤 것과도 비교할 수 없다고 생각한다. 사람들은 생명을 가장 가치 있게 여긴다. 그래서 사람들은 자기 생명을 사랑하고 아낀다. 사람들은 자기 생명을 잃는 것은 상상도 할 수 없다고 여긴다. 예수님은 생명의 주인이요 주권자다. 모든 사람의 생명은 주님의 권능 안에 있다. 예수님은 우리의 생명이시다(요 11:25; 골 3:4). 우리의 생명이신 주님께서 말씀한다. 예수님은 우리 생명을 영원히 보전하는 길을 알려 주신다.
예수님은 자기의 생명을 사랑하는 자는 잃어버린다고 말한다. 자기 생명을 사랑하지 않는 사람은 없다. 그런데 자기 생명을 예수님보다 더 사랑하면 잃어버린다. 내 목숨이 소중하기 때문에 주를 믿지 않고, 순종하지 않고, 섬기지 않는 사람은 생명을 잃는다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리는 스스로 자기 생명을 얻을 수 없다. 내가 내 생명을 소중하게 여기면서 잃지 않기 위해 노력한다고 얻는 것이 아니다. 우리가 생명을 얻는 길은 주님에게 있다. 우리는 생명을 내 마음과 내 뜻대로 할 수 없다. 그것은 주님의 권한이다. 그래서 우리는 그 주님을 순종해야 한다.
예수님은 사람이 생명을 얻기 위해서는 자기 생명을 미워해야 한다고 말한다. 우리가 생명을 얻는 길은 자기 생명을 미워하는 것이다. 자기 생명을 미워한다는 의미는 무엇인가. 그것은 우리 목숨을 주를 위해 바치는 것이다. 자기 목숨을 미워하는 것은 주를 순종하는 것이다. 부자 청년은 영생을 얻기 원했다. 하지만 그는 생명을 얻지 못했다. 그는 부와 돈을 예수님의 말씀보다 더 사랑했기 때문이다. 그는 자기 소유를 영생보다 더 귀하게 여겼다. 그는 자기 목숨을 위해서 자기의 소유를 사용했다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 주의 말씀을 순종하는 것을 방해하는 것은 모두 제거해야 한다. 우리가 주님과 주의 말씀보다 더 소중하게 여기면 영생을 얻는 데 실패한다.
예수님은 하나님 말씀을 순종했다. 주님은 십자가에 죽기까지 순종했다. 주님은 자기 목숨보다 하나님 말씀을 더 귀하게 여겼다. 그래서 주님은 부활하고 승천했다. 그 주님이 우리에게 영생을 주셨다. 사도 바울은 복음 전도를 자기 목숨보다 더 귀하게 여겼다(행 20:24). 우리는 십자가의 피로 구속 받은 주님의 것이다. 우리는 나의 생명되신 주님을 위해 목숨을 바쳐야 한다. 우리는 주를 섬기고 순종하는 일을 목숨보다 귀하게 여겨야 한다. 그러면 우리는 영원한 생명을 얻게 된다. 우리는 주를 믿고 순종하는 것을 방해하는 모든 것을 떠나야 한다. 거기에 영생의 길이 있다.
예수님은 사람이 주를 섬기려면 주님을 따라야 한다고 말한다(26). 누군가를 섬기는 사람은 그 사람의 말을 따라야 한다. 섬김은 내가 섬기는 사람의 말과 뜻을 따르면서 시작된다. 주님을 섬기는 사람은 주를 따라야 한다. 주님의 말씀을 따르지 않고는 주를 섬길 수 없다. 불순종은 주를 섬기지 않는 것이다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 순종하면서 주를 따른다. 우리는 주님 말씀대로 형제와 이웃을 사랑하면서 주를 따른다. 사도들은 주님의 부르심에 순종했다. 그래서 그들은 주를 섬겼다. 순종은 주를 섬기는 지름길이다.
우리가 주님을 섬기면 주님이 계신 곳에 함께 있게 된다(26). 주님이 계신 곳은 천국이다. 천국은 하나님 아버지가 계시는 곳이다. 하나님 아버지는 아들 예수님을 순종하여 섬기는 사람을 귀하게 여긴다. 우리가 하나님께 귀하게 여김을 받으려면 주를 섬겨야 한다. 하나님 아들 예수님을 섬기는 것은 곧 하나님 아버지를 섬기는 것이다. 그래서 하나님은 우리가 예수님을 순종하여 섬길 때에 우리를 귀하게 여긴다. 하나님 아버지는 우리의 생명, 몸, 삶, 가정, 자녀를 귀하게 여긴다. 하나님이 귀하게 여기는 삶은 주님을 섬기는 것이다.
Those Who Serve the Lord (John 12:25-26)
Apostle John was a fisherman. And Jesus called him to be his disciple. He followed him for 3 years. He learned from him and served him. John was a disciple loved by the Lord. He wrote the Gospel of John, three epistles, and the Book of Revelation. He is now with the Lord in the kingdom. Today’s passage talks about following and serving Jesus.
Jesus says, “Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (v.25). We do not like to lose anything. We especially do not want to lose something special. We think losing money is a huge deal. People who have been scammed are greatly distressed. Losing one’s child is unimaginable. Jesus tells us the way to not lose our life.
There is one life. It is very special. People generally don’t think there is anything more special than their life. People think life is more valuable than gold and is incomparable in value to anything else. People consider life to be of greatest value. Therefore, they love and cherish life. People cannot imagine losing their life. Jesus is the Lord and Ruler of life. All people’s lives are in the power of the Lord. Jesus is our life (John 11:25; Colossians 3:4). And he tells us the way to keep our life eternally.
Jesus says that those who love their life will lose it. There is no one who does not love their life. Nonetheless, if we love our life more than Jesus, we will lose it. If we do not believe in, obey, or serve the Lord because our life is valuable, we will lose our life. We must remember that we cannot gain life on our own. We cannot gain our life by doing our best not to lose it. The way to gain life is in the Lord. We cannot do with our life according to our mind and will. The Lord has authority over it. Therefore, we must obey him.
Jesus says that to get life, we must hate it. The path to keeping one’s life is to hate it. What does it mean to hate our life? It is to dedicate our life to the Lord. Hating our life is to obey the Lord above all things. The rich young man in the Bible wanted to get eternal life. But he could not get it because he loved wealth and money more than the word of Jesus. He valued his possessions more than Jesus. He used his possessions for his own life. But we must obey the Lord instead. We must remove everything that hinders obedience. If we value anything else above the Lord and his word, we fail to get life.
Jesus obeyed the word of God. The Lord obeyed to death on the cross. He values the word of God more than his life. Therefore, he was resurrected and ascended to heaven. He gave us eternal life. Apostle Paul valued gospel preaching more than his life (Acts 20:24). We are those who were redeemed with the blood of the cross. We must devote our life to the Lord, who is our life. We must value serving and obeying the Lord above all else. Then we will get eternal life. We must avoid all things that hinder faith and obedience to the Lord. That is the path to eternal life.
Jesus says that to serve him, we must follow him (v.26). When we serve someone, we must follow what they say. Serving happens from following the person’s word and will. Those who serve the Lord must follow him. Without following his word, they cannot serve him. Disobedience is not serving the Lord. It is through obedience that we serve him. We follow the Lord by loving our brothers and neighbors. The apostles were obedient to their calling. And they served him. Obedience is the shortcut to serving the Lord.
When we serve the Lord, we will dwell with him (v.26). The Lord dwells in heaven. Heaven is where God the Father lives. The Father values those who obey and serve the Son Jesus. To be valued by God, we should serve Jesus. Serving Jesus the Son of God is serving God the Father himself. Therefore, God values us when we serve in obedience to Jesus. God the Father values our life, body, family, and children. Valuing God is serving the Lord Jesus.
