모든 사람은 죽는다. 죽음의 종류는 다양하다. 어떤 사람은 사고로 죽고, 어떤 사람은 병으로 죽고, 어떤 사람은 전쟁에서 죽고, 어떤 사람은 자연사한다. 어떤 사람이 높은 빌딩에서 뛰어 내렸다. 그 사람이 빌딩 밑에 있는 사람에게 떨어졌다. 그 두 사람은 함께 죽었다. 이처럼 죽음의 모양은 여러 가지다. 오늘 본문은 예수님의 죽음의 방법에 관하여 말한다.
지금 예수님은 십자가의 죽음을 앞 두고 있다. 죽음을 앞 둔 주님은 마음이 괴롭고 고통스럽다. 주님은 견딜 수 없는 슬픔과 괴로움 속에 있다(27). 사람들은 고통스러운 일을 앞에 두고 괴로워한다. 사람들은 안 좋은 일이 있으면 두려워하며 떤다. 빚을 진 사람은 빚에 대한 압박으로 괴로워 한다. 하박국은 대적들의 침략을 앞 두고 두려움과 떨림에 사로잡혔다. 예수님은 마음의 괴로움 속에서 고통스러워 하고 있다. 사람은 심리적인 압박이 크면 할 말을 못한다. 주님은 말할 수 없는 괴로움 속에 있다. 주님의 괴로움은 나의 죄 때문이다. 예수님은 나의 죄 때문에 십자가에 죽으셨다.
예수님은 이 고통스럽고 괴로운 시간이 지나가기를 기도한다(27). 사람은 큰 시련에 직면하면 그 시련이 빨리 끝나길 바란다. 큰 수술을 앞 둔 사람은 속히 그 시간이 지나가길 바란다. 주님은 괴롭지만 피할 수 없는 시간이 지나가기를 바란다. 하지만 주님은 그 때 곧 십자가의 죽음을 위해서 오셨다. 십자가의 죽음은 속죄 사역이다. 그것은 우리의 구원과 영생을 위한 주님의 필수 사역이다. 우리는 십자가의 속죄 없이는 구원 받을 수 없다. 그래서 우리는 예수님의 십자가의 고난을 잊지 말아야 한다. 우리는 십자가의 죽음으로 인한 주님의 은혜와 사랑을 가슴 깊이 되새겨야 한다.
예수님은 아버지 하나님의 이름이 영광스럽게 되기를 기도한다(28). 예수님의 십자가의 죽음은 하나님 아버지를 영광스럽게 했다(빌 2:8-11). 십자가는 순종을 의미한다. 십자가는 하나님의 뜻의 성취다. 하나님 아버지의 뜻은 영생이다(요 6:40). 영생은 예수님의 십자가를 통해서 성취되었다. 예수님의 괴로움과 십자가의 죽음은 나를 위한 것이다. 우리는 이것을 잊지 말아야 한다. 하나님 아버지는 예수님의 기도에 응답하셨다. 하나님은 ‘내가 이미 영광스럽게 하였고 또 다시 영광스럽게 하리라’고 말씀했다. 하나님은 예수님의 사역을 통해서 영광을 받으셨다. 주님의 모든 사역은 곧 아버지 하나님의 뜻의 성취다. 우리 역시 우리의 삶과 사역을 통해서 주님과 하나님 아버지를 영화롭게 해야 한다. 이를 위해서 우리는 주의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 우리의 삶은 주님의 뜻이 성취되는 통로다. 우리는 모든 일에 하나님을 영화롭게 해야 한다(고전 10:31). 바울은 복음을 전하다가 감옥에 갇혔다. 그것은 주님을 영화롭게 하는 것이다. 주를 위한 삶은 주를 영화롭게 한다.
사람들은 예수님의 기도에 응답하시는 하나님의 음성을 듣고 천둥소리와 천사의 음성이라고 생각했다(29). 그러나 주님은 그 음성은 주님 자신을 위한 것이 아니라 그 음성을 들은 사람들을 위한 것이라고 말했다(30). 하나님은 예수님의 십자가의 죽음을 통해서 영광을 받으셨다. 그 십자가는 곧 우리의 속죄를 위한 것이다. 그래서 예수님을 영광스럽게 하신다는 하나님의 음성은 곧 우리를 위한 것이다. 하나님은 우리를 위해서 예수님을 보내시고 십자가에 달려 죽게 하셨다. 예수님은 우리를 위해 오시고, 우리를 위해 사시고, 우리를 위해 죽으셨다.
예수님은 이 세상의 심판이 왔다고 말한다(31). 또한 예수님은 이 세상의 임금이 쫓겨 날 것이라고 말한다(31). 이 세상 임금은 마귀를 가리킨다. 예수님은 십자가의 죽으심과 부활을 통해서 마귀 권세를 무너뜨렸다. 마귀는 사망의 권세를 잡았다(히 2:14) 예수님은 죄를 없애려고 오셨다(요일 3:5, 8). 죄와 사망은 주님의 십자가와 부활로 해결되었다. 십자가와 부활은 사탄의 권세에 대한 승리다. 사탄은 주님의 십자가와 부활로 심판을 받았다.
예수님은 말한다. “내가 땅에서 들리면 모든 사람을 내게로 이끌겠노라”(32). 주님의 말씀에 대한 해석은 다음절인 33절에 있다. 예수님은 땅에서 들린다. 그것은 십자가에 달려 죽으심을 의미한다. 예수님은 자연사로 혹은 사고로 죽지 않으셨다. 예수님은 우리 죄를 씻기 위해서 십자가 곧 나무에 달려 죽으셨다. 주님의 십자가에서 흘린 피가 우리 죄를 사하신다. 우리는 주님의 죽음과 속죄의 은총을 영원히 잊지 말아야 한다. 우리는 주님의 십자가를 항상 기억해야 한다.
Jesus’ Death (John 12:27-33)
All people eventually die. There are many kinds of death. Some people die from accidents, some from illnesses, some from war, and others from natural death. In one unfortunate instance, a person jumped from a high-story building and fell on a pedestrian. And they both died. Death happens in many forms. Today’s passage is about the death of Jesus.
Jesus was only a moment away from death on the cross. At the face of death, Jesus was distressed and in pain. He was deeply troubled (v.27). People are normally distressed in the face of difficulties. When there is a bad situation, people tremble and fear. For instance, someone who is in debt is distressed from the pressure to pay it off. Habakkuk was seized with fear and trembling in the face of enemy invasion. Jesus was in anguish with a troubled soul. When the pressure is great, people aren’t able to even speak properly. Jesus was in an inexpressible distress. His distress was because of our sins. Jesus died on the cross for our sins.
Jesus prayed that this painful hour passes by (v.27). When we face a great trial, we hope that it will end soon. A person with a big surgery scheduled wishes that the surgery will quickly be over. Jesus wanted this unavoidable time to pass. But Jesus came for just that–to die on the cross. Death on the cross is the ministry of forgiveness of sins. It is an essential ministry of the Lord for our salvation and eternal life. We cannot be saved without the forgiveness of sins through the cross. Therefore, we must never forget Jesus’ passion on the cross. We must deeply meditate on the grace and love of the Lord given through his death on the cross.
Jesus prayed for the Father’s name to be glorified (v.28). Jesus’ death on the cross glorified the Father (Philippians 2:8-11). Cross was obedience. It was the fulfillment of God’s will. God the Father’s will is eternal life (John 6:40). Eternal life was achieved through the cross of Jesus. Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross are for us. We must never forget this. God the Father answered Jesus’ prayer. God said, “I have glorified it and will glorify it again” (v.28). God received glory through Jesus’ ministry. All his ministries fulfilled the Father’s will. We also ought to glorify Jesus and God the Father through our lives and ministries. To this end, we must obey his Word. Our lives are the path to fulfilling the Lord’s will. We must glorify God in all things (1 Corinthians 10:31). Paul was imprisoned while preaching the gospel. This glorified the Lord. Living for the Lord glorifies him.
Those who heard God’s answer to Jesus’ prayer thought they heard thunder or an angel (v.29). However, Jesus said the voice was not for him but for the benefit of the people who heard it (v.30). God was glorified through Jesus’ death on the cross. The cross was for the forgiveness of our sins. Hence, the voice of God that glorifies Jesus is for our benefit. God sent Jesus for us and had him be crucified. Jesus came for us, lived for us, and died for us.
Jesus said that it was time for judgment on this world. He also said that the prince of this world will be driven out (v.31). The prince of the world refers to the devil. Jesus demolished the power of the devil through death on the cross and the resurrection. The devil holds the power of death (Hebrews 2:14). And Jesus came to take away sin (1 John 3:5, 8). Sin and death were conquered through Jesus’ cross and the resurrection. The cross and the resurrection signify victory over the power of Satan. Satan received judgment through Jesus’ cross and the resurrection.
Jesus says, “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself” (v.32). The interpretation for this verse is in the next verse. Jesus will be lifted from the earth. That is, he will be crucified. He did not die naturally or through an accident. He died on the cross, that is, a tree to wash away our sins. The blood shed on the cross cleanses our sins. We must never forget the Lord’s death and his gift of forgiveness. We must always remember the cross of Jesus.
