왕이 되는 길은 왕의 자녀로 태어나는 것이다. 왕이 죽으면 그 자녀가 왕이 된다. 그는 왕으로서 모든 권리와 권세 그리고 권위를 가진다. 빛의 자녀는 어떻게 될까요? 빛의 자녀가 되면 누리는 권세와 권리가 있다. 본문 성경은 빛의 자녀되는 길을 말한다.
예수님의 말씀을 들은 사람들은 질문한다. 34절은 예수님의 말씀을 들은 사람들의 반응이다. 믿지 않는 사람들의 반응과 믿는 사람들의 반응이 있다. 우리는 주님의 말씀에 어떠한 반응을 보여야 할까요. 믿지 않는 사람들은 주님의 말씀을 거부한다. 그들은 주의 말씀을 싫어하고 비판한다. 그들은 순수하게 말씀을 듣지 않는다. 하지만 믿는 사람들은 다르다. 그들은 아멘으로 응답한다. 그들은 하나님의 말씀으로 믿고 순종한다. 그들은 주의 말씀을 사랑하고 기뻐한다. 믿는 사람은 말씀을 좋아하고 사모한다.
유대인들은 그리스도는 율법에서 영원히 계시다고 들었다고 주장한다. 이 말은 옳다. 그리스도는 영원히 계신다. 그것은 그리스도의 신성을 나타낸다. 인간은 영원한 존재가 아니다. 인간은 시간적 존재다. 인간은 세상에 잠시 있다가 사라진다. 그리스도는 초월적 존재다. 그리스도는 피조물과 다르다. 그리스도는 만물 위에 계신다. 그리스도는 피조물에 속하지 않는 성자다. 그리스도는 구주이시다. 피조물인 인간은 구주가 될 수 없다. 주 예수 그리스도 외에는 구주가 없다. 사이비 구주는 참 그리스도가 아니다. 예수님은 영원히 계시는 그리스도다. 주님은 만물 위에 계신 참 구주이시다.
유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 이해하지 못하고 있다. 그들은 그리스도가 땅에서 들리지 않고 영원히 계신다고 이해했다. 그것은 잘못 된 해석이다. 그리스도는 땅에서 영원히 있지 않다. 주님은 땅에서 들려서 영원히 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉아 계신다. 예수님은 구주 사역을 완성하신 후에 승천하셔서 하나님 아버지와 함께 계신다. 주님은 하나님 아버지께로부터 오셔서 다시 아버지께로 가신다. 주님은 영원전부터 아버지 하나님과 함께 계신다. 유대인들은 성경을 잘 알지 못하고 있다. 우리가 성경을 바르게 아는 것은 중요하다. 성경에 대한 바른 지식은 바른 믿음으로 인도한다. 베드로 사도는 성경을 곡해하다가 멸망에 이른다고 말한다(벧후 3:16).
참 그리스도이신 예수님은 말씀한다. “아직 잠시 동안 빛이 너희 중에 있으니 빛이 있을 동안에 다녀 어둠에 붙잡히지 않게 하라 어둠에 다니는 자는 그 가는 곳을 알지 못하느니라”(35). 예수님은 세상의 빛이시다(요 8:12). 빛은 잠시 동안만 있다. 그것은 예수님 잠시 후에 세상을 떠난다는 의미다. 잠시는 시간이 짧다는 의미다. 사람들은 긴 시간을 잠깐이라고 하지 않는다. 예수님은 구주 사역을 완성하고 잠시 후에 떠난다. 주님은 십자가와 부활 사역 후에 하늘로 승천한다.
빛이신 예수님은 유대인들과 함께 계셨다. 주님은 이 세상에서 살아계신 동안 빛을 비추셨다. 유대인들은 빛이신 주님이 계시는 동안에 다녀야 한다. 그래야 그들은 밝은 빛 가운데서 살게 된다. 빛이 사라지면 어둠이 온다. 사람이 어둠에 붙잡히면 방향을 잡을 수 없다. 어둠에 다니는 사람은 가는 곳을 알 수 없다. 예수님이 없는 삶은 어둠에 있다. 어둠은 죄와 죽음을 의미한다. 죄 가운데서 사는 사람은 어둠 속에 다닌다. 주를 믿지 않는 사람은 죄와 사망의 권세 아래 있다. 죄의 어둠 가운데 사는 사람은 자신이 가는 길을 알지 못한다. 그는 자신이 멸망과 지옥으로 가는 것을 알지 못한다. 만일 그가 안다면 그것을 피할 것이다. 하지만 죄의 어둠이 그를 알지 못하게 한다. 그는 영적으로 죽었다. 그래서 그는 감각이 없다. 주님이 없는 삶은 죄와 사망의 어둠이 지배한다.
하지만 빛이신 주님을 믿는 사람은 빛 가운데 산다. 그는 생명의 빛에 산다. 그래서 그는 자신이 가는 길을 안다. 그는 생명의 빛이신 주님과 하나님 아버지가 계신 곳에 간다는 사실을 알고 있다. 믿는 자는 빛과 낮에 속해 있다. 우리는 빛의 자녀요 낮의 자녀다(살전 5:5). 우리는 죄와 사망의 어둠에 속해 있지 않다. 우리는 빛이 있는 낮에 다닌다.
예수님은 아직 빛이 있을 동안에 빛을 믿으라고 말한다(36). 주님은 빛이신 주님을 믿으면 빛의 아들이 된다고 말한다. 우리가 빛의 아들이 되는 길은 믿음이다. 어둠의 자녀가 빛의 자녀가 되는 길은 믿음뿐이다. 믿음은 죄와 사망의 어둠에서 벗어나는 길이다. 예수님의 십자가와 부활은 우리를 의와 생명의 빛으로 인도한다. 그래서 우리는 빛이신 하나님의 자녀가 된다. 우리는 빛의 자녀로서 믿음으로 살아야 한다. 믿음의 삶은 생명의 빛의 삶이다.
Believe in the Light (John 12:34-36)
To become a king, one needs to be born as the king’s child. When the king dies, the child rises to the throne. And they obtain all power and authority as king. How about the children of the light? There are powers and privileges that the children of the light enjoy. Today’s passage tells us the way to become the children of the light.
The people who heard Jesus questioned him. Verse 34 is the people’s response. There were responses from the believers and unbelievers. How should we respond to the word of the Lord? Unbelievers reject the word of the Lord. They reject and criticize his words. They do not receive the Word with a pure heart. Not so with the believers. They receive the Word with Amen. They believe it as the word of God and obey it. They love and rejoice with his Word. Believers love and yearn after the word of God.
In the passage, the Jews claimed that they heard from the law that the Messiah will remain forever. This is true. Christ remains forever. This shows Christ’s divine nature. Humans are not eternal beings. They have a temporary existence. People remain for a little while on the earth and are gone. But Christ is transcendent. He is different from the Created. He is above all things. He is the Son of God and does not belong to the Created. Christ is the Savior. People, who are the Created, cannot be the Savior. There is no other Savior besides the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is the eternal Christ. The Lord is the true Christ who is above all.
The Jews did not understand what Jesus was telling them. They had thought that the Messiah will not be lifted but will remain forever on earth. This is a misinterpretation. Christ is not on the earth forever. He is lifted to the eternal throne on the right hand of God. Jesus is with the Father after completing his ministry of a Savior and ascending to heaven. The Lord came from the Father and returned to him. He was with the Father from eternity. The Jews did not understand the Bible correctly. It is important for us to understand it correctly. Correct understanding of the Bible leads to true faith. Apostle Peter says that distorting the word of God leads to destruction (2 Peter 3:16).
Jesus, the true Christ, says “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going” (v.35). Jesus is the light of the world (John 8:12). Light stays temporarily. That is, Jesus will leave the world in a little while. A little while means in a short time. At the time of the passage, Jesus was going to leave the world after completing the ministry of a Savior. The Lord was to ascend to heaven after his ministry of crucifixion and resurrection.
Jesus of Light was with the Jews. And he shone his light while in the world. The Jews must walk while the Lord of Light is with them. Then they will live in the brightness of the light. When the light disappears, darkness will take over. Those who are overtaken by darkness do not know their way. Life without Jesus is in darkness. Darkness refers to sin and death. People who live in sin live in darkness. Those who do not believe in Jesus live under the power of sin and death. People who live amid sin and darkness do not know the way they are going. They do not know that they are going the way to destruction and hell. If they had known, they would have avoided the path. However, the darkness of sin prevents them from knowing. They are spiritually dead. So they are insensitive. Life without the Lord is reigned by sin and darkness of death.
However, those who believe in the Lord live in the light. Therefore, they know the way they are going. They know that they are going the way to the Lord of the light of life and to where God the Father is. Believers belong to the light and the day. We are the children of the light and the children of the day (1 Thessalonians 5:5). We do not belong to the darkness of sin and death. We walk in the daylight.
Jesus says to believe in the light while they have it (v.36). He says that if we believe in the Lord of Light, we will become the children of the light. The way to become the children of the light is by faith. Faith is the only way for the children of the darkness to become the children of the light. It is the way to escape the darkness of death. The cross and the resurrection of Jesus leads to our righteousness and light of life. Therefore, we become the children of the light. We must live by faith as children of the light. A life of faith is a life lived in the Light of Life.
