애굽의 총리가 된 요셉이 그의 형들 앞에서 고백한다. “하나님이 생명을 구원하시려고 나를 당신들보다 먼저 애굽에 보내셨나이다”(창 45:5). 요셉은 하나님이 구원의 계획을 갖고 자기를 애굽에 보내셨다고 말한다. 하나님은 오늘 우리와 관련하여 어떤 분인가? 하나님은 어떤 권능이 있는가? 오늘 성경은 그것을 알려준다.
사람들은 무엇을 능력으로 삼는가. 대부분의 사람들은 세상에 있는 것을 의지한다. 사람들은 돈을 힘으로 삼는다. 돈이 없으면 능력이 없다고 생각한다. 그래서 사람들은 돈이 능력이라고 생각한다. 돈 많은 사람은 능력이 있다고 자랑한다. 어떤 사람들은 권력을 의지한다. 그들은 권력이 자기 능력이라고 여긴다. 어떤 판사가 교통법규 위반으로 경찰에 잡혔다. 그는 경찰에게 자기가 누군지 아느냐고 교만을 떤다. 어떤 사람들은 명예를 능력으로 삼는다. 어떤 사람들은 사람을 의지한다. 하지만 풀과 먼지 같은 사람은 능력이 될 수 없다.
오늘 성경은 말한다. 여호와는 나의 능력이다(14). 우리는 기억해야 한다. 이 땅에 있는 것들은 우리의 능력이 될 수 없다. 우리의 능력은 하늘에 계신 하나님과 십자가와 부활의 주님이시다. 우리는 힘이 되고 도울 수 있는 존재를 의지해야 한다. 하나님은 천지를 만드셨다. 창조의 능력을 가지신 분이 우리의 힘이다. 하나님은 진실하고 선하시다. 우리는 진실하고 선하신 하나님을 우리의 능력으로 의지해야 한다. 하나님은 홍해바다를 갈라지게 하셨다. 그래서 이스라엘은 바다 가운데를 육지 같이 건넜다. 하나님은 다윗을 모든 원수의 손에서 구원하셨다. 그래서 다윗은 하나님을 자기의 힘이라고 고백한다(시 18:1). 피조물로서 연약한 나를 도울 수 있는 분은 하나님이시다. 내 영혼과 삶을 안전하게 보호하는 분은 하나님이시다.
우리는 죄를 스스로 해결할 수 없다. 우리는 죄와 죽음의 권세를 이길 수 없다. 아무리 능력이 있고 권세 있는 사람도 죄와 죽음의 세력 앞에 굴복한다. 죄와 죽음의 권세를 이길 수 있는 분이 있다. 그분은 하나님의 아들 주 예수 그리스도다. 그래서 주 예수 그리스도는 우리의 구주가 되신다. 영원하신 성령으로 거룩하게 되신 주님이 우리의 죄를 씻는다. 주님은 십자가의 피로 내 죄를 깨끗하게 하신다. 그래서 우리는 죄에서 해방된다. 주님은 죽음의 권세를 이기시고 부활하셨다. 부활이고 생명이신 주 예수 그리스도만이 죽음의 권세를 이긴다. 우리가 죽음에서 벗어나는 길은 부활의 주님을 믿는 것이다.
주님은 우리의 구원이시다(14). 우리는 십자가와 부활의 주님을 믿음으로 구원을 얻고 주를 찬송한다. 우리는 우리에게 영원한 생명을 주신 주 하나님을 마음으로 입으로 찬송한다. 우리는 멸망과 지옥의 권세에서 구원하시는 주님을 의지해야 한다. 주님이 구원하신다. 주님만이 나의 구원이시다. 주님은 마귀의 권세와 모든 악한 세력에서 우리를 구원하신다. 주님은 모든 병에서 구원하신다. 주님은 모든 문제와 고난에서 구원하신다. 하나님은 애굽 바로의 권세와 억압에서 이스라엘을 구원하셨다. 지금 나를, 나의 삶을, 나의 모든 문제와 고난에서 누가 구원하는가. 바로 나를 구원하시는 분은 주님이다. 그래서 우리는 구원의 주를 의지해야 한다.
구원은 기쁨을 준다. 우리가 고난에서 벗어나면 기쁘다. 그래서 믿음으로 구원 받은 의인들은 기쁨으로 구원의 주님을 높이고 찬양한다(15). 주님만이 권능의 손으로 나를 도우시고 구원해 주시기 때문이다. 주의 오른 손은 힘이 있다. 하나님은 전능하다. 주님은 불가능이 없다. 주님은 원하시는대로 모든 것을 할 수 있다. 주님은 그 권능으로 우리를 구원하시고 보호해 주신다. 주님은 제자들을 풍랑에서 건지셨다. 주님은 천지만물을 다스리신다. 주님은 항상 나와 함께 하신다. 주님은 언제 어디서나 나를 눈동자 같이 지키신다. 요나를 큰 물고기 배 속에서 건지신 분이 주님이시다. 우리는 주님의 오른손의 권능을 의지해야 한다.
주의 오른손은 높이 들렸다(16). 주는 높이 들린 오른손으로 권능을 베푸신다. 주님의 높이 들린 오늘손은 불 속에서 해를 받지 않고 나오게 하신다. 주님의 오른손은 사자굴에서 죽지 않고 살게 하신다. 주님의 오른손의 권능은 죽은 과부의 독자를 살리신다. 주님의 높이 들린 오른손은 죄와 사망의 권세에서 건지신다. 주님은 권능을 베푸셔서 모든 악한 세력에서 건지신다. 주님의 오른손의 권능은 우리가 사는 동안에 도우시고, 구원하시며, 지키신다. 우리는 주님의 높이 들린 오른손의 권능을 의지하며 살아야 한다.
Our Strength and Salvation (Psalms 118:14-16)
Joseph, who became a governor of Egypt, said to his brothers, “And now, don’t be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you” (Genesis 45:5). Joseph says that God had plans of salvation and sent him to Egypt. Who is God in relation to us today? What kind of power does he have? Today’s passage tells us this.
What do people rely on? Most people rely on the things of this world. People lean on money. They think that they are powerless without money. They think money is power. People who are wealthy brag that they have power. Some people rely on authority. They think that authority is their power. A judge was caught by the police for violating a traffic law. With arrogance, he asked the police if he knew who he was. Some people rely on reputation. Others rely on people. However, humans, who are like grass and dust, cannot be our strength.
Today’s passage says that God is our strength (v.14). We must remember that the things of this world cannot be our strength. Our strength is God who is in heaven and our Lord of the cross and resurrection. We must lean on something that can be our strength and help. God created the heavens and the earth. The One who has the power of Creation is our strength. God is truthful and good. We must rely on the truthful and good God as our strength. God split the Red Sea. So the Israelites went through it as on dry land. God saved David from all his enemies. So David confessed that God is his strength (Psalm 18:1). Only God can help us, the created, who are weak. God protects our spirits and lives.
We cannot solve sin on our own. We cannot overcome the power of sin and death. No matter how powerful a person is, they surrender before the power of sin and death. But there is One who can triumph over the power of sin and death. It is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Therefore, our Lord Jesus Christ becomes our Savior. Our Lord, who is holy by the eternal Spirit, washes our sins away. Our Lord cleanses our sins through the blood of the cross. Therefore, we are liberated from sin. Our Lord overcame the power of death and resurrected. Only the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the resurrection and our life, can overcome the power of death. The way to escape the path of death is to believe in the Lord of the resurrection.
The Lord is our salvation (v.14). We are saved through faith in the Lord of the cross and the resurrection and praise him. We praise the Lord our God who gave us eternal life with our heart and lips. We must trust in the Lord, who saves from destruction and the power of hell. The Lord saves. The Lord only is our salvation. He saves us from the power of the devil and all wicked power. The Lord saves us from all diseases. He delivers us from all our problems and hardships. God saved Israel from the oppression and power of Pharoah. Who saves us and our lives from all our problems and hardships even now? The Lord is the one who saves. Therefore, we must trust in the Lord of salvation.
Salvation bestows joy. When we escape hardship, we rejoice. Therefore, we who have been saved through faith joyfully exalt and praise the Lord of salvation. Only the Lord helps and saves us with his mighty hand. The Lord’s right hand is powerful. He is Almighty. In him, there is no impossibility. The Lord can do all things according to his will. He protects and saves us with his power and strength. Jesus saved the disciples from a storm. He rules over all things in heaven and earth. And he is always with us. Wherever we are and in all circumstances, the Lord protects us like the apple of the eye. The Lord saved Jonah from the belly of a great fish. We must lean on the power of the Lord’s right hand.
The Lord’s right hand is exalted (v.16). The Lord exercises power with his exalted right hand. His exalted right hand enables us to come out of the fire without being harmed. The Lord’s right hand enables us to live and not die in the lion’s den. The Lord’s power of the right hand raises the dead son, the only child, of a widow. God’s greatly exalted right hand delivers from the power of sin and death. The Lord exercises his power and delivers us from the power of the devil. The power of the Lord’s right hand helps, saves, and protects us in our lives. We must trust in the Lord’s exalted right hand as we live our lives.
