어떤 일에 증인이 있다. 길을 건너는 사람을 자동차가 부딪히고 도망갔다. 그 때에 다른 운전자가 도망가는 차를 보았다. 그는 사고에 대한 증인이었다. 그 목격자는 경찰에 신고했다. 결국 사고를 낸 운전자는 잡혔다. 증인은 사실에 대한 확실성과 신뢰를 준다. 증인이나 증거가 없으면 신뢰성이 떨어진다. 오늘 본문 성경은 부활의 증인들을 말한다.
3-4절은 복음의 핵심을 말한다. 무엇이 복음인가? 사도 바울은 주님으로부터 받은 복음을 고린도교회 성도들에게 전했다. 그가 전한 복음은 주 예수 그리스도의 십자가와 부활이다. 우리를 죄와 사망에서 구원하신 십가와 부활의 주 예수 그리스도가 복음이다. 그리스도는 성경대로 우리 죄를 위하여 죽으시고 묻히셨다. 예수님은 성경대로 사셨다. 예수님은 자기의 뜻과 생각대로 살지 않았다. 그리스도는 성경대로 3일만에 다시 살아나셨다. 주님의 부활은 성경의 성취였다. 주님의 삶은 순종의 삶이었다. 우리의 삶도 마찬가지다. 우리는 주님처럼 성경대로 살아야 한다. 순종의 삶이 곧 믿음의 삶이다.
5-8절은 부활의 증인들에 관한 기록이다. 부활하신 주 예수 그리스도를 목격한 사람들이 있었다. 그들은 게바로부터 시작해서 바울까지 모두 여섯번이다. 어떤 경우는 한 사람, 어떤 경우는 여러 명, 또 어떤 경우는 수백명이다. 부활의 증인들은 많았다. 그들은 한 사람 혹은 두 사람이 아니었다. 부활하신 주님을 본 사람들은 다수였다. 부활하신 그리스도는 한 번만 나타난 것이 아니다. 주님은 성경의 기록에 따르면 8번 정도 나타났다. 부활하신 주님은 자신을 여러 번, 수많은 사람들에게 보이셨다. 그것은 부활의 확실성을 의미한다.
부활하신 주 예수 그리스도의 처음 목격자는 막달라 마리아다. 주님은 무덤에서 울고 있는 마리아에게 먼저 자신을 보이셨다. 마리아는 부활하신 주님의 첫 목격자가 되었다. 그 다음에 주님은 베드로를 포함해서 제자들에게 4번 보이셨다. 주님은 믿는 제자들에게 자기의 부활을 증거했다. 주님은 제자들이 문을 잠그고 집에 모였을 때에 나타났다. 부활하신 주님은 디베랴 바닷가에서 제자들에게 나타났다. 거기서 주님은 제자들과 함께 아침을 먹었다. 주님은 제자들이 부활의 증인이 되기를 원했다. 왜냐하면 그들을 통해서 복음이 전해져야 하기 때문이다. 부활의 증인되는 제자들은 부활하신 예수님이 그리스도라고 전했다. 그래서 초대교회 전도의 모토는 ‘부활하신 예수가 그리스도’라는 것이었다. 부활이 없는 메시아는 참 메시아가 아니다. 우리 죄를 위하여 십자가에서 죽으시고 부활하신 주님이 참 그리스도다. 주님은 부활을 통해서 죽음의 권세를 이기셨다. 부활의 주님은 영원히 죽을 우리에게 영원한 생명을 가져왔다. 주님은 우리를 죄와 사망 그리고 멸망과 지옥에서 구원하셨다. 바로 그 부활의 주 예수 그리스도가 복음이다. 부활이 없는 복음은 복음이 될 수 없다.
부활하신 그리스도는 500명에게 나타났다(6). 500명의 증인이 있었다. 목격자가 수백명이었다. 그들 중에는 잠든 사람들도 있었고 아직 살아 있는 사람들도 있었다. 증인이 많을 수록 신뢰할 수 있다. 주님의 부활의 확실성은 많은 증인들에 의해서 확증되었다. 주님의 부활을 본 사람들은 큰 확신을 가지고 복음을 전했다. 복음을 들은 많은 사람들은 주를 믿었다.
부활하신 그리스도는 주님의 동생 야고보에게 나타났다(7). 그 후에는 주님은 모든 사도들에게 나타났다. 주님은 자신의 부활을 계속해서 알렸다. 주님은 자신의 부활을 수많은 목격들에게 확증시켰다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 부활을 믿는다. 부활하신 주님은 사도 바울에게 나타났다. 바울은 주님의 제자들을 잡아 오기 위해서 다메섹으로 가고 있었다. 그때에 주님은 정오쯤 되어서 갑자기 바울에게 나타났다. 바울은 부활의 확실한 증인이 되었다. 그래서 지금 이 성경에서 부활의 그리스도를 증거하고 있다.
우리 또한 주 예수 그리스도의 부활의 증인이다. 우리는 부활의 증인들의 증거를 받은 사람들이다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 부활을 믿는다. 주 예수 그리스도는 부활이다(요 11:25). 그리스도 주 예수는 일어나셨다. 우리는 부활의 증인들이다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 사도들처럼 그리스도의 부활을 증거해야 한다. 주님의 부활은 곧 나의 부활을 확증한다. 내가 부활 할 수 있는 것은 주님이 부활했기 때문이다. 우리는 부활 신앙을 가지고 부활의 그리스도를 증거하자.
Witnesses of the Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3-8)
There are witnesses of incidents. In one instance, a car hit a pedestrian and drove off. Another driver witnessed the incident. He reported to the police and the offender was eventually caught. Witnesses establish certainty and trust regarding a fact. Without witnesses or evidence, the credibility of a claim is reduced. Today’s passage talks about the witnesses of the resurrection.
Verses 3-4 talks about the crux of the gospel. What is the gospel? Apostle Paul preached the gospel he received from the Lord to the Cortinthian believers. The gospel he preached was the cross and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The gospel is Lord Jesus Christ of the cross and the resurrection, who delivered us from sin and death. Christ died for our sins and was buried according to the Scripture. Jesus lived according to the Scripture. He did not live by his own will and thoughts. He was raised to life in three days according to the Scripture. The resurrection of Christ was the fulfillment of the Scripture. The life of the Lord was the life of obedience. The same applies to our lives. We must live according to the Scripture just as Jesus did. The life of faith is a life of obedience.
Verses 5-8 are a record of the witnesses of the resurrection. There were people who witnessed the Lord Jesus Christ after he was raised to life. From Cephas to Paul, there were six groups of witnesses. In some instances, there was a single person; in others, a few people; in still others, several hundred people. There were many witnesses of the resurrection. They were not just one or two people. There were many who saw the Lord after he resurrected. Christ who resurrected did not show himself only once. According to the Scripture, he appeared in around eight instances. Jesus, after being raised to life, appeared to many people in multiple instances. This speaks to the certainty of the resurrection.
The first witness of Jesus after he was raised to life was Mary Magdalene. The Lord showed himself first to Mary, who was crying in front of his tomb. Mary was the first witness to Jesus after he resurrected. Afterward, Jesus appeared to his disciples, including Peter, four times. The Lord testified to his resurrection to the disciples, who believed. When the disciples locked themselves in and were gathered in a room, Jesus appeared to them. Jesus, after resurrection, also appeared to his disciples by the Sea of Tiberius. There Jesus ate breakfast with the disciples. Jesus wanted his disciples to become the witnesses to the resurrection because the gospel had to be preached through them. The disciples, who were the witnesses of the resurrection, preached that Jesus who was raised to life is the Christ. Therefore, the motto of the Early Church in regard to evangelism was Jesus Who Has Risen is Lord. A Messiah without resurrection is not the true Messiah. The Lord who died on the cross for our sins and was raised to life is the true Christ. The Lord overcame the power of death through the resurrection. The Lord who has risen brought about eternal life for us, who were destined to eternal death. Jesus delivered us from sin and death, from destruction and hell. The Lord Jesus Christ who has risen is the gospel. Gospel without resurrection cannot be gospel.
After he had risen, Jesus appeared to five hundred people (v.6). There were five hundred witnesses. Among them were those who had fallen asleep and those who were still alive. The more the witnesses, the greater the credibility of the claim. The certainty of Jesus’ resurrection was confirmed through the many witnesses. The people who saw the resurrection of the Lord preached the gospel with assurance. And many among those who heard the gospel believed in him.
Jesus appeared to his brother James after being risen (v.7). Afterward, he appeared to all of his disciples. He kept letting his resurrection known. He confirmed his resurrection to numerous witnesses. Therefore, we believe in the resurrection of Jesus. The Lord also appeared to Apostle Paul. Paul was on his way to Damascus in order to arrest the Lord’s disciples. Jesus suddenly appeared to Paul at about noon. And Paul became a sure witness to the resurrection. Therefore, he is testifying about the Christ of the resurrection in today’s Scripture.
We also are witnesses to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are people who received the evidence of the witnesses to the resurrection. Thus, we believe in the Lord’s resurrection. The Lord Jesus Christ is the resurrection (John 11:25). The Lord Jesus Christ has risen. And we were the witnesses of his resurrection. Therefore, we must testify to his resurrection just as his disciples did. Jesus’ resurrection confirms our resurrection. We can be raised to life because Jesus was raised to life. Let us testify about Christ of the resurrection with faith in the resurrection.
