어떤 일에는 원인이 있다. 이스라엘 사람들이 40년 동안 광야생활을 했다. 그 이유는 그들이 하나님을 믿지 않고 불순종했기 때문이다. 경찰이 티켓을 발부하는 이유는 법규를 위반했기 때문이다. 오늘 본문은 유대인들의 불신앙에 대한 이유를 설명한다.
예수님은 많은 표적을 행했다. 그 표적은 예수님이 메시야라는 증거다. 예수님은 표적을 행하심으로 자신이 그리스도임을 증명했다. 예수님은 인류 역사상 그 누구도 할 수 없는 표적을 행하셨다. 그래서 예수님은 믿을 수 있는 증거를 유대인들에게 주셨다. 예수님은 수많은 병을 고쳤다. 주님은 나병 환자를 깨끗하게 했다. 예수님은 중풍병자를 치유하고, 못 걷는 사람을 걷게 하고, 말 못하는 사람과 못 듣는 사람을 치유했다. 예수님은 죽은 자를 살리고, 물로 포도주를 만들고, 물 위를 걷고, 바람과 파도를 잔잔하게 했다. 예수님은 오병이어의 기적을 행했다. 이러한 표적은 무엇을 의미하는가? 예수님이 메시야라는 증거다. 구약성경에 예언된 구주시라는 증거다. 예수님은 자신이 행하신 표적을 통해서 성경을 성취했다.
그런데 문제는 무엇인가? 예수님이 많은 표적을 행했지만 유대인들이 믿지 않았다는 것이다(37). 사람들은 어떤 사람이 갑자기 쓰러졌을 때, 그 사람을 치료한 사람이 의사라고 말하면 믿는다. 사람들은 정작 믿어야 할 일을 믿지 않는다. 지금도 많은 사람들이 예수 그리스도를 믿지 않는다. 사람들은 예수님이 행하신 기적과 표적을 듣고도 믿지 않는다. 사람이 믿지 않기로 작정하면 명백한 사실도 부인한다. 그래서 마음이 굳은 사람들은 불신앙에 빠진다. 사람들은 죄된 본성을 따라서 산다. 그들은 불순종의 영의 지배를 받는다. 그래서 그들은 믿음에 이르지 못한다.
성경은 유대인들이 믿지 않는 이유를 설명한다(38-41). 유대인들의 불신앙은 이사야 선지자의 예언의 성취다(사 53:1). 하나님은 미리 알고 계셨다. 사실 지금도 마찬가지다. 모든 사람이 주 예수를 믿는 것이 아니다. 믿는 사람들도 있고 믿지 않는 사람들도 있다. 이 세상에는 믿지 않는 사람들이 더 많다. 이사야 선지자는 말한다. ‘우리가 전한 것을 누가 믿었는가. 주의 팔이 누구에게 나타났는가’ 이사야는 유대인들이 믿지 않았기 때문에 주의 권능이 나타나지 않았다고 말한다.
주의 권능은 믿을 때에 나타난다. 주님은 맹인에게 묻는다. ‘내가 너의 눈을 뜨게 할 수 있는 줄 믿느냐’ 맹인들은 ‘그렇습니다’라고 대답했다. 예수님은 ‘너희 믿음대로 되라’고 말한다. 그래서 맹인들은 믿은대로 눈을 떴다. 믿음은 주의 기적과 능력과 구원의 통로다. 우리가 주를 믿음으로 속죄함을 얻는다. 우리는 믿음으로 의롭다함을 얻고 영생을 얻는다. 우리의 구원과 영생 곧 십자가와 부활의 권능은 믿음으로 주어진다. 따라서 믿지 않으면 주의 권능은 나타나지 않는다. 우리가 주의 권능을 맛보기 위해서는 믿어야 한다. 우리의 삶에 주의 권능이 역사하기 위해서는 믿어야 한다. 불신앙에는 주의 권능의 역사가 없다.
이사야 선지자는 유대인들이 믿지 않는 이유를 예언했다(39-40). 믿지 않는 이유는 여러 가지다. 어떤 사람들은 마음으로부터 믿는 것을 거부한다. 어떤 사람들은 방해하는 사람들 때문이라고 말한다. 어떤 사람들은 일이 바빠서 못 믿는다고 말한다. 오늘 성경은 무엇을 말하는가? 성경은 마음을 지으시고 다스리시는 하나님께서 믿지 않는 사람들을 가운데 역사하심을 보여 준다. 하나님은 보고도 믿지 않는 사람들의 눈을 멀게 하셨다. 별을 보고도 별이 아니라고 한다면, 사실을 부인하는 것이다. 유대인들은 예수님이 행하신 표적을 보고도 믿지 않았다. 주님께서 눈을 멀게 했기 때문이다. 우리가 믿는 것은 하나님이 믿음의 눈을 뜨게 했기 때문이다.
유대인들은 마음을 완고하게 했다(40). 그들은 믿지 않기로 마음을 먹었다. 그들은 눈으로 보고 마음으로 깨닫고 주께로 돌아와서 고침을 받는 것을 원하지 않았다(40). 하나님은 애굽 바로의 마음을 강팍하게 했다. 그래서 그는 이스라엘 백성을 보내지 않았다. 우리에게 믿는 마음을 주시는 분이 하나님이시다. 주님은 우리의 마음을 열고 주를 영접하게 하신다. 빌립보에서 루디아의 마음을 열어서 주의 말씀을 듣게 하신 분이 주님이다(행 16:14). 이사야는 주의 권능과 영광을 보고서 유대인들의 불신앙을 말했다(41). 우리는 기억해야 한다. 믿음은 하나님의 은혜다. 믿음은 하나님의 역사다. 믿음은 주의 십자가와 부활의 권능과 영생의 역사를 가져 온다. 우리는 오직 믿음으로 살아야 한다. 그러면 우리의 삶은 주의 권능과 영광으로 충만할 것이다.
Reason for Unbelief (John 12:37-41)
Situations have a cause. The Israelites lived in the desert for 40 years. It was because they did not believe in God and disobeyed him. The reason a police would issue citations is that a traffic law is violated. Today’s passage explains the reasons for the Jews’ unbelief.
Jesus performed many miracles. This is evidence that Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus showed that he is the Messiah by performing miracles. He performed miracles that no one in history could ever perform. He gave them evidence for the Jews to believe. Jesus healed many illnesses. He healed the leprous and the paralyzed; he made the lame walk and healed the mute and the deaf. He raised the dead, turned water into wine, walked on water, and calmed the storm and waves. He performed the miracle of the five loaves and two fish. What do these miracles signify? They prove that Jesus is the Messiah. They are evidence that Jesus is the Savior prophesied about in the Old Testament. Jesus fulfilled the Scriptures through the miracles he performed.
But what was the problem? While Jesus performed many miracles, the Jews still did not believe (v.37). When someone suddenly collapses and another comes and treats that person claiming to be a doctor, people would believe. But they fail to believe in what they must believe. Even today, many people do not believe in Jesus Christ. People do not believe even though they have seen his signs and miracles. When people decide to not believe, they even deny the truth. So those whose hearts are hardened fall into unbelief. People live by their sinful nature. They are governed by the spirit of disobedience. Therefore, they cannot attain faith.
The Bible explains the reason for their unbelief (v.38-41). The Jews’ unbelief is the fulfillment of Prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 53:1). God foreknew. This is the case even now. Not everyone believes in the Lord Jesus. There are people who believe and those who do not. In this world, there are more people who don’t believe. Prophet Isaiah says, “Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” He says that the power of the Lord was not displayed because the Jews did not believe.
The power of the Lord is revealed when we believe. Jesus asked a blind man, “Do you believe that I can open your eyes?” and the man replied “Yes, Lord.” And Jesus said, “As you have believed, so let it be done for you”. So the blind men opened their eyes as they had believed. Faith is the path to miracles, power, and salvation of the Lord. We receive forgiveness of sins through faith in the Lord. We receive righteousness through faith and gain eternal life. Our salvation and eternal life, that is, the power of the cross and the resurrection are given through faith. Therefore, if we do not believe, the Lord’s power will not be revealed. To experience the power of the Lord, we must believe. For the Lord’s power to work in our lives, we must believe. There is no work of the power of God when there is unbelief.
Prophet Isaiah prophesied about the reasons the Jews do not believe (v.39-40). Some people just deny believing from their heart. For some, it’s because of others who put up a stumbling block. For others, it’s because they are busy with their own work. What does the Scriptures say? The Bible shows how God, who created the heart, works in the unbelieving people. He blinded the people who have seen and yet have not believed. Seeing the stars but saying they are not stars is denying the truth. The Jews saw the miracles Jesus performed but did not believe. It is because the Lord blinded them. We are able to believe because he has opened our eyes of faith.
The Jews hardened their hearts. They were determined not to believe. They did not want to see with their eyes, understand with their hearts and turn and be healed (v.40). God hardened Pharoah’s heart. So he did not let the Israelites go. The One who gives us a believing heart is God. The Lord opens our hearts and enables us to welcome him. It is the Lord who opened the heart of Lydia in Philippi and enabled her to hear the Word (Acts 16:14). Isaiah talked about the Jews’ unbelief after seeing the Lord’s power and glory (v.41). We must remember that faith is the grace of God. Faith is the work of God. It brings about the power of the cross and the resurrection of the Lord and the work of eternal life. We should live only by faith. Then our lives will be filled with the power and glory of the Lord.
