사도 바울은 복음을 전하면서 수많은 멸시와 조롱과 박해를 받았다. 그가 전한 복음을 듣고 믿은 사람들도 있었다. 하지만 바울이 전한 복음을 믿지 않는 사람들도 많았다. 바울은 사람들의 인정과 칭찬을 얻으려고 힘쓰지 않았다. 그는 사람들의 인기를 추구하지 않았다. 그는 사람 중심의 사역을 하지 않았다. 그는 사람을 따라서 살지 않았다. 그는 오직 하나님의 영광을 구했다. 믿는 유대인들은 하나님의 영광보다 사람의 영광을 사랑했다. 본문 성경은 그것을 말한다. 우리는 하나님 앞에서 바른 믿음이 무엇인지를 배워야 한다.
유대인들은 예수님이 행하신 많은 표적을 보았다. 그러나 그들은 믿지 않았다. 유대인들의 불신앙은 이사야 선지자가 예언했다(요 12:39-40). 성경의 예언대로 유대인들은 주를 믿지 않았다. 하지만 모든 유대인들이 믿지 않은 것이 아니다. 주의 말씀을 듣고, 주님이 행하신 표적을 보고 믿는 사람들이 있었다. 12제자들이 예수님을 구주로 믿었다. 또 주를 믿은 사람들 중에는 회당장, 니고데모, 아리마대 요셉, 나사로 가정, 예수님을 섬기고 따른 여자들이 있었다. 그리고 많은 세리와 죄인들이 주를 믿었다. 사도 바울이 데살로니가에서 복음을 전했을 때에 박해를 받았다. 하지만 바울이 베뢰아에서 복음을 전했을 때에, 그들은 듣고, 믿고, 성경을 연구했다. 결국 복음이 전해지면 이러한 일이 발생한다. 우리는 소망을 가지고 포기하지 말고 복음을 전해야 한다. 거기에는 반드시 믿는 사람이 있기 때문이다.
유대인의 지도자들 가운데서도 믿는 자가 많았다(42). 그들은 예수님을 하나님의 아들 그리스도로 믿었다. 그들 가운데는 예수님을 박해하는 사람들도 있었다. 그래서 그들은 결국 메시야를 죽였다. 하지만 또 다른 유대인의 지도자들은 예수님이 세상의 구주임을 믿었다. 지금도 마찬가지다. 주님을 믿는 사람들 가운데는 대통령, 장관, 국회의원, 주지사, 시장들도 있다.
믿는 유대인들은 자신이 주를 믿는다는 것을 말하지 못했다(42). 그들은 자신이 그리스도인인 것을 숨겼다. 이유는 무엇일까요? 그것은 출교를 두려워 했기 때문이다(42). 그들은 믿는다는 사실이 밝혀지면 유대교에서 쫓겨날까 두려워 했다. 사람들은 여러가지 이유로 때로는 신자라는 것을 숨긴다. 불이익이 되는 경우에는 주를 부인한다. 또 어떤 경우에는 두려움 때문에 주를 부인한다. 박해시에 총부리를 겨누면 많은 사람들이 주를 부인한다. 그들은 두려움 때문에 신자라는 것을 고백하지 못한다. 베드로도 두려움 때문에 주를 3번 부인했다. 우리가 사람을 두려워하면 주를 부인하기 쉽다. 그래서 주님은 사람을 두려워 하지 말고 몸과 영혼을 지옥에 멸하시는 주를 두려워 하라고 말씀한다(마 10:28). 주님을 경외하면서 순종하는 것이 바른 믿음이다.
어떤 그리스도인 소녀가 있었다. 총을 든 사람이 그 소녀에게 물었다. ‘네가 주 예수를 믿느냐’ 그 소녀는 믿는다고 고백하면 오늘 자신이 죽게 될 것을 알았다. 그 소녀는 잠시 고민했다. 하지만 그는 자신을 위해서 십자가에서 죽으신 예수님을 기억했다. 그는 자기를 위해서 죽으신 주님을 부인할 수 없다고 생각했다. 그래서 그는 주 예수를 구주로 믿는다고 고백했다. 그는 총에 맞아서 그 자리에서 순교했다. 그는 죽음의 두려움을 이기고 승리했다. 예수님은 말씀한다. “사람 앞에서 나를 시인하면 나도 하늘에 계신 아버지 앞에서 그를 시인할 것이다. 사람 앞에서 나를 부인하면 나도 하나님 아버지 앞에서 그를 부인하리라”(마 10:32-33). 우리는 사람 앞에서 그리스도인이라는 것을 시인해야 한다. ‘나는 예수님을 하나님의 아들 구주로 믿는다’고 고백해야 한다. 그러면 주님도 하나님 아버지 앞에서 우리가 구원 받은 성도임을 시인할 것이다. 예수님은 자신이 하나님의 아들 메시야임을 사람들 앞에서 시인했다.
유대인 신자들이 공적으로 믿음을 시인하지 않는 이유에 대해서 성경은 말한다(43). 그들은 하나님의 영광보다 사람의 영광을 더 사랑했기 때문이다. 이것을 사람 중심의 신앙이라고 한다. 우리가 사람의 영광을 사랑하면 하나님의 영광을 구하지 못한다. 예수님은 사람으로부터 영광을 구하지 않았다(요 5:41). 예수님은 사람들의 인기와 세상의 명예를 추구하지 않았다. 주님은 세상과 사람들의 버림을 받고 십자가에서 죽으셨다. 예수님은 세상의 영광을 준다는 마귀의 시험을 이겼다. 우리는 그리스도 예수의 사람이다. 우리는 주님을 배우고 본받아야 한다. 우리는 주님의 길을 가야 한다. 우리는 주님처럼 하나님의 영광을 구해야 한다. 우리는 사람과 환경을 두려워 하지 말아야 한다. 우리는 예수님을 구주로 굳게 믿고 시인해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 하나님의 영광을 구하며 살아야 한다. 거기에 하나님 앞에서 바른 믿음이 있기 때문이다.
Seeking the Glory of God (John 12:42-43)
Apostle Paul suffered a great deal of persecution, contempt, and mockery while preaching the gospel. There were people who believed among those who heard the gospel he preached. On the other hand, there were those who did not believe the gospel. Paul did not work to receive acknowledgment and praise from people. He did not seek fame from people. He did not do people-centered ministry. He did not live by people. He only sought the glory of God. But the Jews loved human glory more than the glory of God. Today’s passage tells us this. We must learn what proper faith is before God.
The Jews saw many miracles that Jesus performed. However, they did not believe in Jesus. The Jews’ unbelief was foretold by Prophet Isaiah (John 12:39-40). The Jews did not believe in Jesus, just as it had been prophesied in the Scriptures. However, not all the Jews were unbelievers. There were people who believed in Jesus when they heard the Word of God and saw the miracles he performed. The twelve disciples believed in Jesus. And there were the synagogue leader, Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimathea, the family of Lazarus, and the women who served and followed Jesus. Moreover, many tax collectors and sinners believed in him. When Apostle Paul preached the gospel in Thessalonica, he was persecuted. However, when he preached the gospel in Berea, the people heard, believed, and studied the Scriptures. When the gospel is preached, these things happen. So we must spread the gospel with hope, and without giving up. For there will be people who believe.
Even among the Jewish leaders, there were many who believed in Jesus (v.42). They believed that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God. There were also those who persecuted Jesus. And they eventually killed the Messiah. Similarly, among the believers today, there are presidents, ministers, congressmen and representatives, governors and mayors.
The believing Jews could not openly acknowledge their faith in Jesus (v.42). They hid the fact that they were Christians. Why was that? Because they feared expulsion. They were afraid that they would be put out of the synagogue if the people found out that they believed in Jesus. People conceal that they are Christians for various reasons. When they are at a disadvantage, they deny the Lord. There are times when people deny the Lord because of fear. During persecution, people denied the Lord when they were held at gunpoint. Due to fear, they could not confess that they were believers. Peter denied the Lord three times because of fear. When we fear people, it is easy for us to deny the Lord. Therefore, Jesus tells us to not be afraid of the people but to fear God who can throw our body and soul into hell (Matthew 10:28). Proper faith is fearing the Lord and obeying him.
There was a Christian girl. Someone with a gun asked her if she believed in Jesus Christ. The girl knew she would die if she confessed her faith. She was hesitant for a little bit, but she remembered the Lord Jesus who died on the cross for her. She did not want to deny the Lord who died for her. So she confessed that she believes in Jesus Christ as her Lord. She was shot and martyred. She overcame the fear of death and gained victory. Jesus says, “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven” (Matthew 10:32-33). We must acknowledge before people that we are Christians. We must confess, “I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and my Savior.” Then, the Lord will also acknowledge before God the Father that we are true believers who have been saved. Jesus confessed before people that he is the Messiah, the Son of God.
The Bible mentions the reason for the Jewish believers not openly acknowledging their faith (v43). The reason was that they loved praise from humans more than God. This is what we call a human-centered faith. When we love praise from humans, we cannot seek the praise from God. Jesus did not accept glory from human beings (John 5:41). Jesus did not seek popularity and worldly reputation. Jesus was abandoned by the world and people and died on the cross. Jesus resisted the devil’s temptation to give him the glory of the world. We are people of Jesus Christ. We must learn from the Lord and imitate him. We must walk the way of the Lord. We must seek the glory of God just like the Lord. We must not fear people or the environment. We must firmly believe in Jesus as the Savior and acknowledge him. In such a way, we must live seeking the glory of God. That is the true faith before God.
