바른 지식은 유익을 준다. 하지만 잘못된 지식은 해를 끼친다. 어떤 사람이 길을 잘못 알려 주면 목적지에 갈 수 없다. 그러나 길을 안내하는 사람이 바르게 알려 주면 목적지에 갈 수 있다. 옳지 않은 의학 지식은 건강에 도움이 되지 않는다. 예수님에 대한 바른 지식은 매우 중요하다. 바르지 않은 신앙지식은 우리에게 유익을 못 준다. 본문 성경은 예수님을 믿는 것에 대한 바른 교훈을 준다.
예수님은 외쳐 말씀한다(44). 우리는 여기서 가장 중요한 것을 알아야 한다. 그것은 바로 예수님이다. 예수님은 유대인들에게 말씀을 전한다. 그것은 천국의 복음이다. 우리는 주님의 말씀과 가르침을 잘 들어야 한다. 예수님은 어떤 분인가? 우리는 예수님을 바르게 알아야 한다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들이다. 예수님은 메시아 곧 그리스도다. 예수님은 말씀, 진리, 생명, 길, 세상의 빛, 구원, 구주, 의, 지혜, 부활, 만유의 주요 만왕의 왕이시다. 예수님은 모든 권세와 권위의 머리다. 그래서 우리는 주 예수의 말씀을 듣고 배워야 한다. 주님의 말은 사람의 말이 아니다. 대통령이나 선생 혹은 군대 지휘관의 말이 아니다. 예수님은 말씀은 하나님 말씀, 전능한 말씀, 구원의 말씀, 생명의 말씀, 영원한 진리의 말씀이다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “나를 믿는 자는 나를 믿는 것이 아니요 나를 보내신 이를 믿는 것이다”(44). 예수님은 곧 하나님의 아들 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는 것에 대한 의미를 설명한다. 오늘 우리는 예수님을 하나님의 아들 그리스도 구주로 믿는다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지가 보내셔서 세상에 오셨다. 예수님은 스스로 오신 것이 아니다. 예수님을 보내신 하나님은 예수님을 하나님의 아들 구주로 믿기를 원하신다. 우리가 예수님을 구주로 믿음으로 하나님의 자녀가 된다(요 1:12; 요일 5:1). 하나님의 자녀된 우리는 하나님 아버지를 믿고, 경배하고, 섬긴다. 우리는 예수님을 믿지 않고 하나님께로 나가지 못한다(요 14:6). 오직 우리는 성자 예수님을 믿음으로 하나님께 나올 수 있다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “예수님을 믿는 것은 예수님만 믿는 것이 아니요 예수님을 보내신 하나님을 믿는 것이다” 즉 성자를 믿는 것은 성부를 믿는 것이다. 우리가 예수님을 믿지 않고는 하나님을 믿을 수 없다는 사실이다. 어떤 사람이 ‘나는 하나님만 믿고 예수님은 안 믿는다’고 말하는 것은 틀린 것이다. 또 ‘나는 예수님만 믿고 하나님은 안 믿는다’고 말하는 것도 틀리다. 예수님을 믿는 것은 곧 하나님을 믿는 것이다. 하나님을 믿기 위해는 성자 예수를 믿어야 한다. 예수님을 떠나서 하나님을 믿는 길은 없다. 예수님을 믿지 않고는 하나님의 자녀 되는 길은 없다. 우리가 하나님을 아버지로 모시기 위해서는 예수님을 믿어야 한다. 우리가 천국에서 하나님 아버지와 함께 살기 위해서는 예수님을 믿어야 한다. 우리가 하나님을 믿기 위해서는 성자 예수님을 믿어야 한다.
유대인들은 하나님을 믿는다고 말한다. 하지만 그들은 하나님이 보내신 성자 예수님은 믿지 않았다. 결국 그들은 하나님을 믿지 않은 것이다. 어떤 사람이 자기 말을 전하라고 사람을 보냈다. 그런데 그는 보낸 사람의 말을 믿지 않았다. 그는 자기 말을 전하라는 사람을 믿지 않는 것이다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지가 보내셨다. 그래서 예수님은 자기를 보내신 하나님 아버지의 말씀을 전했다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 예수님 말씀을 듣는 것은 곧 예수님을 보내신 하나님 말씀을 듣는 것이다. 우리가 하나님 말씀을 듣기 원하면 곧 예수님 말씀을 들어야 한다. 우리는 예수님을 통해서 하나님 말씀을 들을 수 있다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “나를 보는 자는 나를 보내신 이를 보는 것이니라”(45). 우리가 하나님을 보려면 예수님을 보아야 한다. 유대인들은 하나님이 보내신 성자 예수님을 보면서 하나님을 볼 수 있었다. 하지만 그들은 예수님을 믿지 않았다. 그들은 결국 하나님을 보지 못했다. 우리가 하나님을 보는 길은 예수님을 믿는 것이다. 우리는 거룩하고 청결한 마음으로 하나님을 볼 수 있다(마 5:8). 우리는 믿음으로 구원 받고 천국에서 하나님을 볼 것이다.
예수님은 자신을 하나님과 동일시 한다. 예수님은 하나님과 자신은 하나라고 말한다. “나와 아버지는 하나이니라”(요 10:30). 예수님은 “나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았다”(요 14:9)고 말씀한다. 또 주님은 “내게 주신 영광을 내가 그들에게 주었사오니 이는 우리가 하나 된 것 같이 그들도 하나가 되게 하려 함이니이다”(요 17:22). 또 “내가 아버지 안에 아버지가 내 안에 계신다”(요 14:10)고 말한다. 우리는 잊지 말아야 한다. 예수님을 믿는 것은 하나님을 믿는 것이고, 예수님을 보는 것은 하나님을 보는 것이며, 예수님 말씀을 듣는 것은 하나님 말씀을 듣는 것이다.
Believing in Jesus (John 12:44-45)
Correct knowledge benefits us. But incorrect knowledge may do us harm. If someone gives us wrong directions to a place, then we cannot get to the destination. But if they give correct directions, then we can get to the destination. Incorrect medical knowledge is not helpful to our health. Similarly, correct knowledge about Jesus is very important. Incorrect knowledge about faith gives us no benefit. Today’s passage gives us correct teaching about believing in Jesus.
Jesus cries out in verse 44. We need to note something important. That is, Jesus. Jesus spoke the word of God to the Jews. He spread the gospel of the kingdom of heaven. We must pay attention to Jesus’ word and teaching. Who is Jesus? We must correctly know who he is. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is the Messiah, that is, the Christ. Jesus is the Word, the truth, the life, the way, the light of the world, salvation, Savior, righteousness, wisdom, resurrection, Lord of lords and King of kings. He is the head of all power and authority. Therefore, we must listen to and learn his words. His word is not the word of a human. It is not the word of a president, teacher, or a commanding officer. The word of Jesus is the word of God, the word of might, the word of salvation, the word of life, and the word of eternal truth.
Jesus says, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me” (v.44). Jesus explains the meaning of believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. We believe that Jesus is the Son of God and Christ the Savior. Jesus came to the world because he was sent by God. He did not come on his own. God, who sent Jesus, wants us to believe that Jesus is the Savior and the Son of God. We become the children of God by believing in Jesus as the Savior (John 1:12; 1 John 5:1). We who have become children of God believe, worship, and serve God. We cannot go to God without believing in Jesus (John 14:6). We can come to God only through faith in Jesus the Son.
Jesus says that believing in him is believing not only in him but in the Father who sent him. That is, believing in God the Son is believing in God the Father. Without believing in Jesus, we cannot believe in God. If anyone says, “I believe just in God but not Jesus,” it is incorrect. In the same way, saying “I believe in Jesus only but not God” is incorrect. Believing in Jesus is believing in God. To believe in God, we must believe in Jesus the Son. There is no way to believe in God apart from Jesus. Without believing in Jesus, there is no way to become God’s child. To have God as our Father, we must believe in Jesus. To live with the Father in the kingdom of heaven, we must believe in Jesus. To believe in God, we must believe in Jesus the Son.
The Jews say they believe in God. However, they did not believe in Jesus the Son, whom God sent. They, after all, did not believe in God. Someone sent a person to deliver a message to a certain person. However, he did not believe the message of the person who sent the messenger. He did not believe in the one who sent the messenger. God the Father sent Jesus. So Jesus preached the word of the Father who sent him. We must remember that listening to Jesus is listening to God who sent him. If we want to listen to the word of God, we must listen to the word of Jesus. We are able to listen to the word of God through Jesus.
Jesus says, “The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me” (v.45). To look at God, we must look at Jesus. The Jews were able to see God by looking at Jesus the Son whom God sent. However, they did not believe in Jesus. At last, they did not see God. The way to see God is through believing in Jesus. We can see God through a holy and pure heart (Matthew 5:8). We will be saved by faith and see God in heaven.
Jesus made himself equal with God. He said that he and God are one: “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). Jesus says, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). He also says, “I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one” (John 17:22) and “I am in the Father, and the Father is in me” (John 14:10). We must never forget that believing in Jesus is believing in God, looking at Jesus is looking at God, and hearing the word of Jesus is hearing the word of God.
