범죄자가 법정에서 재판을 받는다. 재판에는 기준이 있다. 재판관은 무엇을 기준으로 재판을 할까요? 그는 자기 생각대로 혹은 사람들의 의견을 기준으로 재판하지 않는다. 재판은 반드시 법에 따라 행해져야 한다. 법이 재판의 기준이다. 예수님은 재판관이다. 모든 사람은 재판장이신 예수님 앞에 서서 심판을 받을 것이다. 주님은 무엇을 기준으로 심판할까요? 본문 성경은 그 해답을 준다.
예수님은 “나는 빛으로 세상에 왔다”(46)고 말한다. 빛은 어둠을 몰아낸다. 어둠은 빛을 이길 수 없다. 빛이 비추면 어둠은 물러간다. 예수님은 빛이다. 그렇다면 세상은 무엇을 의미할까요? 세상은 빛과 반대다. 곧 세상은 어둠이라는 의미다. 세상은 빛이 없는 어둠 속에 있다. 그 어둠을 비추는 빛이 예수 그리스도다. 그렇다면 빛은 무엇일까요? 빛은 생명을 의미한다(요 1:4). 예수님은 생명의 빛이다. 주님이 오시기 전에는 세상에 생명이 없었다. 그래서 세상은 사망의 어둠 속에 있었다. 어둠은 죽음을 의미한다. 죽음은 인간이 이길 수 없다. 죽음을 해결 할 수 있는 분이 필요하다. 그분이 바로 예수님이다. 사망의 어둠은 생명의 빛이신 예수님이 몰아낸다. 예수님은 십자가와 부활을 통해서 죄와 사망의 어둠을 몰아냈다. 그리고 주님은 우리에게 생명의 빛을 비추셨다. 하지만 주 예수를 믿지 않는 사람들은 어둠 가운데 있다. 그들이 빛으로 나오기 위해서는 생명의 빛이신 주님을 믿어야 한다.
생명의 빛으로 오신 예수님은 말씀한다. “무릇 나를 믿는 자로 어둠에 거하지 않게 하려 함이로다”(46). 예수님은 우리가 어둠에서 벗어나게 하시려고 세상에 오셨다. 우리가 사망의 어둠에서 벗어나는 길은 믿음이다. 우리는 주를 믿음으로 속죄함과 의롭다함을 받는다. 그 결과 부활의 권능을 힘입어 사망에서 벗어난다. 우리는 믿음으로 영원한 생명을 얻는다. 예수님은 어둠 속에 있는 사람들이 빛으로 나오기를 원하신다. 주님은 사람이 죽음에서 생명으로 나오기를 원하신다. 그래서 주님은 우리가 믿기를 원하신다. 우리가 주를 믿지 않고는 생명을 얻을 길은 없기 때문이다. 죽음은 믿음으로 해결된다. 그 외에 방법은 없다. 예수님은 말한다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 내 말을 듣고 또 나 보내신 이를 믿는 자는 영생을 얻었고 심판에 이르지 아니하나니 사망에서 생명으로 옮겼느니라”(요 5:24). 생명의 빛이신 주님을 믿는 우리는 사망에 거하지 않는다. 우리는 생명의 빛에서 살고 있다.
예수님은 자기의 말을 듣고 지키지 않는 사람을 심판하지 않는다(47). 예수님이 생명의 빛으로 오신 목적은 사람을 사망의 어둠에서 구원하는 것이다(47). 예수님은 세상의 구주로 오셨다. 그래서 주님은 십자가에서 죽으셨다. 예수님은 십자가에서 흘린 피로 우리 죄를 씻으셨다. 그리고 주님은 3일만에 무덤에서 살아 나셨다. 주님은 믿는 우리를 죄와 죽음의 권세에서 구원하셨다. 이것이 주님이 세상에 오신 목적이다. 구원자는 십자가와 부활의 주 예수다. 다른 구원자는 없다.
예수님을 구주로 믿지 않고 순종하지 않는 사람을 심판하는 존재가 있다. 그것은 곧 예수님의 말씀이다(48). 예수님은 자신의 말을 기준으로 심판할 것이다. 예수님의 말씀은 심판의 법이다. 사람이 법을 어기면 법에 따라서 처벌을 받는다. 마찬가지로 사람이 예수님의 말씀을 불순종하면 주님의 말씀에 따라서 심판을 받는다. 아담은 하나님 말씀을 불순종 했다. 아담은 하나님 말씀 곧 법대로 형벌을 받아서 죽었다. 이스라엘은 결국 멸망했다. 그들은 법을 지키지 않았기 때문이다. 그들은 심판의 법인 하나님 말씀을 불순종했다. 그래서 하나님은 자신이 하신 말씀 곧 법대로 이스라엘을 징계했다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 주님의 말씀은 법이다. 주님의 말씀은 심판의 법이다. 어떤 사람도 예외 없이 주님의 말씀에 따라서 심판을 받게 된다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님이 주시는 생명과 복과 은총을 받아 누려야 한다. 그것이 주님이 이 세상에 오신 목적이기 때문이다.
예수님은 스스로 말하지 않았다(49). 예수님은 자신의 생각과 의견을 말하지 않았다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지께서 주신 말씀을 전했다. 하나님은 자기의 말을 전하라고 예수님을 보냈다. 그래서 예수님은 하나님 아버지가 주신 말씀을 그대로 전했다. 아버지 하나님께서 아들 예수님에게 주신 말씀은 영생이다(50). 예수님은 말씀이다(요 1:1; 14). 말씀이신 예수님은 또한 생명이다. 그래서 우리가 주님의 생명의 말씀을 믿고 순종하면 영생을 얻는다. 예수님은 하나님께서 주신 말씀을 그대로 전했다. 우리는 그 말씀을 듣고 믿고 생명을 얻었다. 주님의 생명의 말씀은 곧 심판의 말씀이다. 우리는 심판의 법인 생명의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 그러면 우리는 형벌이 아닌 상을 얻을 것이다.
Standard for Judgment (John 12:46-50)
Defendants are tried in court. There are standards for judgment. What standards do judges use? They do not render a judgment based on their thoughts or people’s opinions. Judgment must be rendered according to the law. The law is the standard for judgment. Jesus is the Judge. Every person will stand before Jesus the Judge and receive judgment. On what standard does Jesus render judgment? Today’s passage gives us the answer to this.
Jesus says, “I have come into the world as a light” (v.46). Light drives away darkness. Darkness cannot overcome the light. When light shines, darkness backs away. Jesus is the light. What does the world mean? The world is the opposite of the light. That is, the world is darkness. The world is in darkness, which is without light. Jesus Christ is the light that shines in the darkness. Then, what is light? It signifies life (John 1:4). Jesus is the light of life. There was no life in the world before Jesus came. So the world was in the darkness of death. Darkness signifies death. Humans cannot overcome death. But Jesus defeated death. As the light of life, Jesus drives out the darkness of death. He drove the darkness away through the cross and the resurrection. And he shone the light of life on us. However, those who do not believe in the Lord Jesus are in darkness. For them to come in the light, they must believe in Jesus, the light of life.
Jesus, who came as the light of life, says, “…so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness” (v.46). Jesus came to the world so that we would escape darkness. Faith is the way to escape the darkness of death. We are justified and forgiven through faith. As a result, we escape death through the power of the resurrection. We get eternal life through faith. Jesus wants those who are in darkness to come out to the light. He wants people to come out of death to life. And he wants us to believe, because there is no way to gain life without faith. Death is conquered by faith. There is no other way. Jesus says, “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes in him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life” (John 5:24). We who believe in Jesus, the light of life, do not remain in death. We live in the light of life.
Jesus did not judge those who heard his word and did not keep it (v.47). Jesus came to the world as the light of life to save us from the darkness of death (v.47). Jesus came as the world’s Savior. So he died on the cross. And he washed away our sins though the blood he shed on the cross. And he rose from the dead in three days. He saved us who believe through the power of sin and death. This is his purpose for coming to the world. Jesus, the Lord of the cross and resurrection, is the Savior. There is no other.
Now there is One who judges those who do not believe in or obey Jesus. This is what Jesus said (v.48). Jesus will judge the world based on his word. The word of Jesus is the law of judgment. When a person violates the law, they receive punishment according to the law. Likewise, when we disobey the word of Jesus, we will receive punishment according to his word. Adam disobeyed the word of God. So he received punishment according to the word of God, that is the law, and died. Israel eventually fell, because they did not keep the law. They disobeyed the word of God, which is the law of judgment. So God punished Israel according to His word, the law. We must remember that the word of the Lord is law. It is the law of judgment. Every person, without exception, is judged according to the word of the Lord. We must obey the word of the Lord. And we should enjoy the blessing and gift of life the Lord gives. For this is the purpose for his coming.
Jesus did not speak on his own (v.49). He did not speak his thoughts and opinions. He preached the word given by the Father. God sent Jesus to tell us his word. So Jesus said the exact word the Father commanded him to say. The word that God gave his Son Jesus is eternal life (v.50). Jesus is the word (John 1:1; 14). And Jesus the Word is also life. Therefore, when we hear his word of life, and believe and obey it, we receive eternal life. Jesus spoke the word exactly as God commanded him. We heard and believed his word and received life. Jesus’ word of life is the word of judgment. We must obey the word of life, which is the law of judgment. Then we will not receive punishment, but reward.
