어떤 연인이 죽도록 사랑했다. 그들은 깊은 애정을 가지고 서로 위해 주었다. 그리고 그들은 결혼했다. 하지만 그들은 얼마 후에 이혼을 했다. 그들은 부부로서 끝까지 서로 사랑하지 않았다. 남편은 아내가 아닌 다른 여자를 사랑했다. 결국 그 가정은 무너졌다. 이것이 바로 사람의 사랑이다. 하지만 예수님의 사랑은 다르다. 주님의 사랑은 변함이 없고 끝이 없다. 오늘 성경은 그것을 말한다.
유월절이 곧 다가왔다. 그 유월절은 예수님의 마지막 유월절이었다. 예수님은 그 유월절 어린양으로 십자가에서 죽으셨다. 예수님은 자신이 세상을 떠나서 아버지께로 돌아가실 때를 아셨다(1, 3). 예수님은 자기를 보내신 아버지에게 다시 가신다. 예수님은 자기 사명을 완수했다. 예수님은 구원사역을 완성했다. 예수님은 아버지의 뜻을 성취했다. 예수님은 사람으로 태어나셔서 사시고 부활하시고 승천하셨다. 예수님은 이렇게 아버지께로 돌아가셨다. 예수님은 자기의 때를 아셨다. 예수님은 자기의 삶과 미래를 아신다. 주님은 신성을 지니셨기 때문이다. 주님은 우리의 때를 아신다. 주님은 우리의 길과 미래를 아신다. 주님은 우리의 삶의 주관자요 인도자시다. 우리는 그 주님을 의지하고 순종해야 한다. 주님은 우리와 함께 하고 도우실 것이다.
예수님은 자기 제자들을 사랑했다. 주님은 자기가 택한 사람들을 끝까지 사랑했다(1). 예수님은 자기 사람들을 사랑하신다. 그들은 주님이 택한 사람들이다. 그들은 주님의 제자들이요 증인들이다. 그들은 주님의 피로 값주고 산 주님의 것이다. 그들은 하나님의 자녀들이요 천국시민이다. 예수님은 자기 사람들을 사랑하신다. 그 사랑은 중단이 없다. 주님의 사랑은 사람과 다르다. 사람의 사랑은 오래가지 않는다. 사람의 사랑은 순간적이고 지속성이 없다. 사람의 사랑은 변화가 많다. 그래서 그것은 신뢰하기 어렵고 불완전하다.
하지만 주님의 사랑은 다르다. 주님은 영원히 계신다. 그래서 주님의 사랑은 영원하다. 주님의 사랑은 중단이 없고 끊어지지 않는다. 주님의 우리를 향한 사랑은 변함이 없고 완전하다. 그것은 하나님이 택하신 이스라엘을 향한 사랑과 같다. 하나님을 향한 이스라엘의 사랑은 변할지라도 이스라엘을 향한 주님의 사랑은 변함이 없다. 부모는 자녀를 사랑한다. 그 사랑은 평생 동안 이어진다. 하나님 아버지와 주님의 사랑도 마찬가지다.
우리는 변함없이 주를 사랑해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 계명을 순종해야 한다. 그러면 주님은 항상 영원히 우리를 사랑하신다. 주님은 자기의 것인 우리를 영원히 지키신다. 주님은 자기의 목숨과 피값으로 산 우리를 귀하게 여기신다. 우리는 주님이 엄청난 대가를 치르고 사셨기 때문에 주님의 마음에 소중한 존재다. 주님은 우리를 마음에 두시고 아끼신다. 주님은 언제 어디서나 나를 사랑하신다. 우리는 주님의 사랑받는 사람들이다.
그런데 마귀가 가룟 유다의 마음에 예수님을 팔려는 생각을 넣었다(2). 마귀는 영적인 존재다. 영적인 존재인 사람의 마음과 생각에 역사한다. 사울 왕의 마음에 악한 영이 역사했다. 그래서 그는 죄 없는 다윗을 죽이려고 했다. 지금도 마귀는 사람의 마음과 생각에 역사한다. 마귀는 사람들을 유혹하고, 시험하고, 넘어뜨린다. 그는 주님과 성도를 대적하고, 미혹하고, 죄를 짓게 한다. 마귀는 우리가 주의 말씀을 순종하지 못하게 한다. 마귀는 아담을 유혹하여 하나님 말씀을 불순종하게 했다. 마귀는 예수님을 시험했다. 마귀는 거짓의 아버지다. 그는 사람들을 속이고 죽인다. 하지만 성령은 선한 영이다. 성령은 진리의 영이다. 성령은 우리 마음에 선하고 진실하고 정직한 생각을 준다. 성령은 우리에게 사랑과 자비와 온유와 신실함과 절제와 순종의 마음을 준다. 사람이 선하고, 정직하고, 진실하고, 사랑의 마음을 가지려면 성령을 받아야 한다. 성령은 하나님이 원하시는 마음 곧 주님의 마음을 우리에게 준다.
예수님은 마지막 만찬을 제자들과 함께 잡수셨다(3). 예수님은 하나님 아버지께서 모든 것을 자기에게 맡기신 것을 아셨다. 아버지는 아들에게 모든 것을 위임하셨다. 예수님은 만물의 주관자다. 예수님은 만물과 만인의 통치자다. 모든 만물은 주님의 권세 아래 있다. 모든 사람도 주님이 다스린다. 우리는 주님의 권세와 권위에 복종해야 한다. 순종은 주님이 원하시는 가장 온전한 삶이다. 우리는 하나님 아버지께 순종하신 주님처럼 주님께 순종해야 한다. 주님은 자기를 보내신 아버지의 뜻을 다 이루셨다. 주님은 자기 사명을 완수했다. 그리고 주님은 아버지께로 돌아가셨다. 우리도 주님이 우리에게 맡기신 사명을 완수해야 한다. 우리는 주님처럼 주의 말씀에 순종해야 한다. 그러면 주님의 뜻이 이루어질 것이다. 우리 또한 사명을 마치고 주님이 계신 천국에 갈 것이다.
Endless Love (John 13:1-3)
A couple loved each other deeply. They had a deep affection and did their best for each other. And they got married. However, they divorced after some time. They did not love each other to the end as husband and wife. The husband had his heart on another woman. The family eventually broke apart. Such is the love between people. However, the love of Jesus is different. His love is unchanging and endless. Today’s passage tells us this.
The Passover festival was approaching. This festival was the last Passover festival Jesus celebrated. Jesus died on the cross as the Passover lamb. He knew when he would leave the world and return to the Father (v.1,3). Jesus returned to the Father who sent him. Jesus completed his mission. He completed the ministry of salvation. He fulfilled the Father’s will. Jesus was born and lived as a human, then he was raised from the dead and ascended to heaven. And so Jesus returned to the Father. He knew his time. Jesus knew his life and future because he had a divine nature. And he knows our time. He knows our way and our future. He is the Lord and Guide of our lives. We must trust in and obey him. He will be with us and help us.
Jesus loved his disciples. He loved his chosen ones to the end (v.1). Jesus loves his own people. Those people are ones whom Jesus chose. They are the disciples and witnesses of Jesus. They are the Lord’s, bought with his blood price. They are the children of God and the citizens of heaven. Jesus loves his people. His love does not cease. His love is different from that of humans. The love of humans does not last long. They are momentary and short-lived. Human love changes frequently and is difficult to trust and imperfect.
However, the love of our Lord is different. He lives eternally. And his love is everlasting. His love never ceases or ends. His love toward us is unchanging and perfect. It is like the love he had toward Israel, his chosen. Though the love of the Israelites toward God may change, God’s love toward Israel never changes. Parents love their children. This love lasts a lifetime. Similarly, the love of God the Father and of Jesus lasts forever.
We must love the Lord without changing. And we must obey the commands of the Lord. Then the Lord will love us always and eternally. The Lord will watch over us, who are his. He values us, who were bought with blood price and his life. Our Lord protects us, who belong to him, forever. As we were bought with a great price, we are precious in his heart. He has us in his heart and cherishes us. He loves us whenever and wherever we are. We are those who receive Jesus’ love.
Now Satan put in Judas Iscariot’s heart the thought of selling Jesus. Satan is a spiritual being. He works in the minds and thoughts of people, who are spiritual beings. The evil spirit worked in King Saul’s heart. So he tried to kill David, who did no wrong. Even now, the evil spirit works in people’s minds and thoughts. It tempts and entices people, making them fall. It opposes the Lord and his believers, deceiving and making people sin. It tries to prevent us from obeying the word of God. The devil tempted Adam and made him disobey God’s word. It tempted Jesus. The devil is the father of lies. It deceives and destroys people. However, the Holy Spirit is the spirit of goodness. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth. It gives us good, truthful, and upright thoughts. It gives us love, compassion, kindness, faithfulness, self-control, and obedience. For a person to become good, upright, truthful, having the heart of love, they must receive the Holy Spirit. For the Holy Spirit gives us the heart of Jesus, the heart that pleases God.
Jesus had the last supper with his disciples (v.3). He knew that the Father entrusted him with all things. Jesus is the Lord of All. He is the Ruler of all things and people. All things are under the power of God. He also rules over all people. We must submit to the Lord’s power and authority. Obedience is the perfect life that pleases the Lord. Just as Jesus obeyed the Father, we must obey Jesus. Jesus fulfilled all the will of God who sent him. He completed his mission. And he returned to the Father. We must also complete the mission Jesus entrusted to us. We must obey the word of God, just as Jesus did. Then the will of Jesus will be fulfilled. And we also would complete our mission and go to heaven, where Jesus is.
