모범이 되는 사람이 있다. 학교에는 모범생이 있다. 공부에 충실하고 품행이 단정한 학생이 모범생이다. 직장에서도 자기 일에 신실한 직원이 다른 직원의 모범이 된다. 교통 법규를 잘 지키고 안전하게 운전하는 사람은 모범운전자다. 믿음의 삶에 모범이 있다. 우리가 본받아야할 모범이 되는 분이 있다. 오늘 본문은 그것을 말한다.
본문 성경은 예수님께서 제자들의 발을 씻으면서 주시는 교훈을 기록하고 있다. 사람들은 남의 발을 씻는 것을 좋아하지 않는다. 그것은 유쾌하고 즐거운 일이 아니기 때문이다. 사람들은 자기 발을 씻어 주는 것은 좋아한다. 예수님이 제자들의 발을 씻으셨다. 예수님은 지극히 존귀하신 하나님의 아들 그리스도 구주이시다. 주님은 모든 사람들로부터 존귀와 영광과 찬양과 경배와 섬김을 받으실 분이다. 그 주님이 사람으로 오셨다. 지극히 높으신 분이 지극히 낮은 자리에 오셨다.
모든 존귀와 영광의 하나님의 아들 예수님이 제자들의 발을 씻으셨다. 제자들이 예수님의 발을 씻지 않았다. 여기에는 심오한 교훈이 있다. 예수님은 섬김을 받기 위해서 세상에 오시지 않았다. 주님은 섬기시고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려고 오셨다(마 20:28). 섬김을 받아야 할 주님이 섬기신 것이다. 우리는 주님을 본받아야 한다. 왜냐하면 예수님은 모범이 되시기 때문이다. 우리는 자신을 낮추어야 한다. 우리는 주님처럼 겸손한 마음으로 섬겨야 한다. 믿음의 삶은 섬김을 받는 것이 아니라 섬기는 것이다. 그래서 섬기지 않는 신앙은 바르지 못하다. 그것은 예수님의 삶과 교훈에 반대된다. 우리는 주님 앞에서 섬기는 자로 서야 한다.
예수님은 제자들의 발을 손수 씻으셨다. 그것은 무슨 의미인가? 주님이 우리의 더러운 죄를 씻으신다는 의미다. 죄는 인간 자신이 깨끗하게 할 수 없다. 십자가의 주님이 죄를 씻으신다. 주님이 우리의 죄를 씻어 주지 않으면 우리는 속죄함 받을 수 없다. 주님은 우리의 죄를 깨끗하게 하려고 세상에 오셨다(요 1:29; 요일 3:5). 예수님은 물, 피, 성령, 말씀으로 죄를 깨끗하게 하신다. 주님은 지금도 주님의 말씀과 성령으로 우리를 깨끗하게 하신다. 우리는 몸과 영을 다 거룩하게 하여 하나님께 드려야 한다. 그것이 하나님의 뜻이기 때문이다(살전 4:3). 거룩하신 주님은 우리가 죄에에서 깨끗하게 되기를 원하신다. 그래서 주님은 십자가에 달려 죽으셨다.
베드로는 예수님을 이해하지 못했다. 그는 왜 주님이 자기 발을 씻어야 하는지를 정확하게 알지 못했다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 주님의 말씀을 온전히 알기 어렵다. 그래서 우리는 부지런히 성경을 읽고 배우며 순종해야 한다. 우리가 지금은 알지 못해도 꾸준히 읽고 배우면 이해할 때가 온다. 주님의 말씀을 아는 길이 거기에 있다. 하나님과 주님을 아는 것이 영생이고 주님을 기쁘시게 하는 것이다(요 17:3). 우리는 주님의 말씀을 배우는 일에 힘써야 한다. 그러면 우리는 주님의 말씀을 계속해서 더 잘 알 수 있다. 우리는 지금 이해하지 못하는 말씀을 나중에 알게 된다(7).
베드로의 반응은 무지와 성급함에서 나왔다. 우리는 겸손히 주님을 배우고 따라가야 한다. 우리는 우리의 생각과 주장을 앞세 울 필요는 없다. 우리는 주님의 말씀과 역사하심에 ‘아멘’하면 된다. 베드로는 주님이 자기 발을 씻는 것을 거부했다. 하지만 주님은 그의 발을 씻지 않으면 주님과 상관이 없다고 말한다(8). 그러자 베드로는 자기의 자기의 손과 머리도 씻어달라고 했다(9). 주님은 그에게 목욕한 사람은 발만 씻으면 된다고 말한다(10). 주님의 말씀과 성령과 피로 깨끗하게 된 우리는 온 몸이 깨끗하다. 속죄함 받은 우리는 매일 주님의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 우리는 몸과 영을 거룩하게 하나님께 드려야 한다. 주님은 한 사람 가룟 유다는 깨끗하지 않다고 암시한다(10-11).
예수님은 자신이 제자들의 발을 씻으신 이유를 설명하신다(12-15). 우리는 주님이 행하신 일과 역사를 알아야 한다. 우리는 주님이 세상에 오신 이유, 십자가와 부활, 주님의 말씀과 기적을 이해해야 한다. 예수님은 제자들의 주님과 선생이다. 물론 예수님은 우리의 주님이시고 선생이시다. 예수님은 주님으로서, 선생으로서 제자들의 발을 씻으셨다. 예수님은 그 이유를 설명한다. 그것은 제자들이 서로의 발을 씻어 주게 하시려고 본을 보이신 것이다(14-15). 우리는 주님을 본받아 순종해야 한다. 예수님은 나의 주님이요 선생으로서 제자들의 발을 씻어 주셨다. 우리도 서로 발을 씻어 주어야 한다. 그것은 단지 발을 씻어 주는 것만을 의미하지 않는다. 우리는 서로 섬겨야 한다. 우리는 서로 용서해야 한다. 서로의 허물과 잘못을 덮어 주어야 한다. 주님이 나의 죄와 허물을 용서하신 것 처럼 용서하고 용납해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 사랑 안에서 화목하고 하나됨을 이루어야 한다.
Exemplary Jesus (John 13:4-15)
There are those who are exemplary. In school, there are model students. These students are committed to their studies and polite and well-mannered. At work, an employee who faithfully carries out their work sets an example to other colleagues. Those who keep the traffic law and drive safely are model drivers. Now there is a model of living by faith. We have a model whom we should follow. Today’s passage is about this.
The passage is the teaching of Jesus when he is washing his disciples’ feet. People do not like to wash others’ feet. It is not a pleasant or joyful thing to do. But they do like it when someone else washes their feet. Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. Jesus is Christ the Savior, the Son of God, the most exalted and honorable. Jesus is worthy to receive honor, glory, praise, worship, and service from all people. He came in the flesh. He who is most exalted came to the lowest place.
Jesus, the Son of God, of all honor and glory washed the feet of his disciples. The disciples did not wash Jesus’ feet. Here is a profound lesson. Jesus did not come to the world to be served. He came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many people (Matthew 20:28). He who should be served by others came as one who serves. And we must follow his example, because he is the model. We must humble ourselves. We must serve with a humble heart just like Jesus. Living by faith is serving others instead of being served. Therefore, having faith but not serving others is not proper faith. Such is the opposite of Jesus’ life and teaching. We must stand before the Lord as those who serve.
Jesus washed his disciples’ feet with his hands. What is the meaning of it? It means that Jesus washes away our filthy sins. We cannot cleanse sin on our own. It is the Lord Jesus of the cross who cleanses our sins. If Jesus does not cleanse our sins, we cannot be forgiven. Jesus came to the world to take away our sin (John 1:29; 1 John 3:5). Jesus cleanses sin through water, blood, the Holy Spirit, and the Word. Even now Jesus cleanses us through his word and the Holy Spirit. We must sanctify our body and spirit and dedicate them to God. This is the will of God (1 Thessalonians 4:3). God, who is holy, wants us to be sanctified and be cleansed from sin. So Jesus died on the cross.
Peter did not understand what Jesus was doing. He did not grasp why Jesus had to wash his feet. Similarly, it is difficult for us to fully understand Jesus’ words. Therefore, we must devote ourselves to reading the Bible and obeying the Word. Though we may not understand now, we will come to understand when we persistently read and learn the word of God. This is the way to know the Word. Knowing God and Jesus is eternal life and it pleases Jesus (John 17:3). We must make every effort to learn the word of God. Then our understanding of the word of God will increase. What we don’t understand now, we will understand later (v.7).
Peter’s reaction was driven by ignorance and haste. We must humbly learn and follow the Lord. There is no need to insist on our thoughts. We just need to say ‘Amen’ to the work and word of God. Peter refused to be washed by Jesus. But Jesus told him that unless he washes his feet, he has no part with him (v.8). So Peter immediately asked to wash his hands and head also (v.9). Jesus responded to him that the one who took a bath just needs to wash their feet (v.10). For us who have been cleansed through his word, the Holy Spirit, and his blood, our whole body is clean. We who have been forgiven must obey the word of God every day. We must give ourselves, our spirit and body, to God as holy. Jesus also tells the disciples that there is one of them, that is, Judas Iscariot, who is unclean (v.10-11).
Jesus explains the reason he washed their feet (v.12-15). We must know the works of Jesus. We must understand the reason he came to the world, the cross and the resurrection, his word and his miracles. Jesus is the Lord and Teacher of the disciples. And he is our Lord and Teacher. He washed the disciples’ feet as their Lord and Teacher. Jesus explains this. It was to set an example to them so the disciples would wash one another’s feet (v.14-15). We must follow his example and obey. As our Lord and Teacher, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet. We must also wash one another’s feet. This does not mean we should literally wash others’ feet. We must serve one another. We must forgive one another. We must cover up others’ trespasses and wrongdoings. Just as Jesus forgave our sin and trespass, we must forgive and accept others. And by doing so, we must achieve peace and unity in Christ’s love.
