그리스도인의 삶은 새로운 삶이다. 그리스도인은 옛 사람이 새 사람이 된 것이다. 그리스도인은 성령으로 거듭난 새로운 피조물이다. 죄와 허물로 죽은 사람이 영생의 사람이 되었다. 그래서 그리스도인은 새 마음으로 변화된 삶을 살게 된다. 그것은 예수님을 믿기 전과는 다르다. 그리스도인은 불신자와 같은 삶을 살아서는 안된다. 그리스도인은 하나님의 자녀로서 천국 시민으로서 살아야 한다. 그러한 삶은 어떻게 이루어지는가? 본문 성경은 그것을 말한다.
사도 바울은 주의 복음을 갈라디아 교회의 성도들에게 전하고 있다. 그들은 주 예수를 구주로 믿었다. 그들은 주의 피로 속죄함 받고 의롭다함을 받았다. 그들은 성령을 받고 거듭나서 새 사람이 되었다. 따라서 그들은 이제 성령으로 살아야 한다. 바울은 갈라디아 교회의 성도들이 성령을 따라서 행해야 한다고 말한다(16). 우리 역시 주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 성령으로 거듭나서 성령의 사람이 되었다. 우리는 우리 안에 거하시는 성령을 따라야 한다.
성령은 하나님의 영이다. 성령은 주의 영이다. 성령은 진리의 영이다. 성령의 사람은 하나님을 따라 산다. 성령의 사람은 주의 말씀을 따라 산다. 성령의 사람은 진리를 따라 산다. 성령의 사람은 세상을 따라 살지 않는다. 성령을 따른다는 것은 예수님처럼 사는 것이다. 성령의 사람은 성령과 함께 걷는 사람이다. 그는 성령과 함께 한다. 그래서 그는 성령의 인도를 받는다. 성령의 사람은 성령의 지도와 가르침으로 행한다. 우리가 성령으로 행할 때에 하나님은 우리와 함께 하신다. 우리가 주님과 함께 하려면 성령으로 살아야 한다. 우리가 주님의 뜻대로 살기 위해서는 성령으로 살아야 한다.
성령은 진리의 영이다. 성령은 우리가 진리를 따라서 살게 한다. 성령이 없는 사람은 진리의 말씀을 순종하지 않는다. 그는 주의 말씀을 순종할 능력이 없다. 성령은 진리를 순종하게 한다. 그래서 우리의 몸과 마음이 하나님 앞에서 거룩하게 한다. 성령은 사랑의 영이다. 그래서 성령은 우리가 사랑으로 살게 한다. 성령은 선한 영이다. 성령의 사람은 마음과 삶이 선한 사람이다. 우리가 성령으로 행할 때에 육체의 욕심을 이루지 않는다(16). 육체는 죄된 본성이다. 성령과 반대되는 영적 본성이다. 천국은 성령으로 거듭난 사람이 들어 간다. 하나님 나라는 성령의 권능 안에 있다. 육체는 하나님 나라를 유업으로 받을 수 없다(19-21).
우리가 육체의 욕심을 버리고 승리하는 길은 성령으로 사는 것이다. 육체와 성령은 적대적이다(17). 이 둘은 서로 자기의 원함을 추구한다. 육체는 성령이 원하는 것을 방해한다. 성령은 육체가 원하는 것을 방해한다. 성령은 사랑으로 행하게 한다. 하지만 육체는 미워하는 마음을 준다. 성령은 용서하는 마음을 주지만 육체는 복수하는 마음을 준다. 성령은 겸손한 마음을 주지만 육체는 교만한 마음을 준다. 성령은 감사하는 마음을 주지만 육체는 원망하게 한다. 성령은 선한 마음을 주지만 육체는 악한 마음을 준다. 성령은 진실하고, 정직하고, 깨끗한 양심을 주지만 육체는 거짓되고 악한 양심을 준다. 성령은 주님을 사랑하는 마음을 주지만 육체는 돈을 사랑하는 마음을 준다. 성령은 순종의 마음을 주지만 육체는 불순종의 마음을 준다. 우리는 성령으로 살아야 한다. 그러면 우리는 죄된 본성의 욕심을 이루지 않게 된다.
우리가 성령의 인도를 따라 살면 율법 아래에 잊지 않는다(18). 율법은 육체 곧 죄된 본성에서 나오는 죄와 악을 온전하게 해결하지 못한다. 죄인 된 인간이 의롭다함을 얻는 길은 믿음이다. 우리가 율법을 행함으로 의롭게 되지 못한다. 인간은 죄된 본성으로 인해서 율법을 온전히 지킬 수도 없다. 율법은 죄가 무엇인지 알게 한다. 하지만 율법은 죄를 해결할 수 없다. 그 이유는 우리 안에 있는 육체 곧 죄된 본성 때문이다. 우리가 율법으로 탐내는 것이 죄라는 것을 안다. 하지만 우리는 탐심을 이길 능력이 없다. 우리의 죄된 본성 때문이다.
우리가 육체를 이기고 극복하는 길은 성령께 있다. 우리가 믿음으로 성령을 받아서 거듭날 때에 육체를 이긴다. 성령은 우리가 진리를 순종하는 마음을 준다. 육체는 진리를 순종할 능력이 없다. 성령은 진리로 우리의 마음과 삶을 거룩하게 한다. 그래서 성령은 우리를 하나님 앞에 거룩하고 흠 없이 세운다. 성령은 율법의 저주 곧 죄의 권세에서 우리가 벗어나게 한다. 우리는 성령으로 행할 때에 율법을 온전히 행할 수 있다. 사랑은 율법의 완성이다. 사랑은 성령으로 행할 수 있다. 우리가 성령으로 살면 율법 아래에서 벗어나고 율법을 성취하게 된다. 우리가 성령으로 행하자. 우리가 육체, 율법, 죄, 사망의 권세에서 해방되는 길이 거기에 있기 때문이다.
Walking by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-18)
The life of a Christian is a new life. They have transformed from an old self to a new self. Christians are new beings born again by the Holy Spirit. We who were dead through sin and transgressions have become the people of eternal life. So Christians live a life in which their hearts have become transformed. It is a life different from the one before believing in Jesus Christ. Christians must not live as unbelievers do. They must live as children of God and citizens of the kingdom of heaven. How is such a life achieved? Today’s passage talks about this.
Apostle Paul is preaching the gospel of the Lord to the believers in the church in Galatia. They believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. They received forgiveness of sin and righteousness through the blood of Christ. They received the Holy Spirit, were born again, and became new selves. Therefore, they had to live by the Holy Spirit. So Paul told the believers in the church in Galatia to walk by the Spirit (v.16). We have also been born again through the Holy Spirit by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and have become the people of the Spirit. We must abide by the Holy Spirit, who lives in us.
The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of the Lord. It is the Spirit of truth. The people of the Spirit live according to God. They live according to the word of the Lord. They live by the truth. They do not live according to the world. Living by the Spirit is living like Jesus. The people of the Spirit walk in step with the Spirit. They live with the Spirit. So they are guided by the Holy Spirit. They live according to the guidance and teaching of the Holy Spirit. When we walk by the Holy Spirit, God is with us. So if we want to be with the Lord, we must walk by the Spirit. To live according to the will of the Lord, we must walk by the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. It enables us to live by the truth. Those without the Spirit do not obey the word of truth. They have no power to obey the word of God. The Holy Spirit enables us to obey the truth. And it sanctifies our body and spirit before God. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of love. It enables us to live in love. It is also the spirit of goodness. The mind and life of the people of the Spirit are good. When we live by the Spirit, we do not gratify the desires of the flesh (v.16). Flesh is sinful nature. It is a spiritual instinct that contrasts the Holy Spirit. Those who have been born again through the Holy Spirit enter heaven. The kingdom of God is in the power of the Holy Spirit. Flesh cannot inherit the kingdom of God (v.19-21).
The way for us to get rid of the desires of the flesh is by the Holy Spirit. Flesh and the Spirit oppose one another (v.17). They independently pursue their own desires. Flesh goes against the desires of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit goes against the desires of the flesh. The Holy Spirit makes us do all things in love. But the flesh makes us hate others. The Holy Spirit gives us the heart to forgive, but the flesh makes us want to retaliate. The Spirit gives us a humble heart but flesh an arrogant one. The Spirit gives us a grateful heart whereas the flesh makes us hold grudges. The Spirit gives us a good heart, but the flesh an evil heart. The Holy Spirit is truthful and honest, giving us a clear conscience; but the flesh is deceitful, giving us an evil conscience. The Holy Spirit enables us to love the Lord, but the flesh makes us love money. The Holy Spirit gives us a heart of obedience, but the flesh gives us a heart of disobedience. We must live by the Spirit. Then we will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
When we live according to the Spirit, we do not live under the law (v.18). The law cannot resolve sin and evil that come from the flesh, that is, the sinful nature. Faith is the only way for sinners to become righteous. We cannot become righteous by keeping the law. We humans cannot fully keep the law due to our sinful nature. The law enables us to know what sin is. But it cannot get rid of sin. It is because of the flesh, the sinful nature. Through the law, we know that coveting is sin. But we don’t have the strength to not covet. This is because of our sinful nature.
The way to overcome the flesh is in the Holy Spirit. We are able to defeat the flesh by receiving the Holy Spirit and being born again through faith. The Holy Spirit empowers our hearts to obey the truth. The flesh has no power to obey the truth. The Holy Spirit sanctifies our hearts and lives by the truth. And it makes us stand as holy and blameless before God. The Spirit enables us to escape the curse of the law, that is, the power of death. When we walk by the Spirit, then we can fully keep the law. Love is the fulfillment of the law. We can love by the Holy Spirit. When we live by the Spirit, we are freed from the law and fulfill the law. Therefore, let us live by the Spirit. For that is the way to be liberated from the flesh, the law, sin, and the power of death.
