주한 미국대사는 미국을 대표하여 대통령이 보낸다. 그는 미국과 대통령을 대신해서 일하는 사람이다. 그렇지만 대사는 대통령보다 높은 지위는 아니다. 오늘 본문 성경은 예수님을 영접하는 사람은 어떤 사람인지를 보여 주고 있다. 우리가 예수님을 영접하는 방법을 성경은 알려 준다.
사회의 조직과 구조의 측면에서 종은 주인보다 크지 않다(16). 학생은 선생으로부터 배우는 사람이다. 따라서 학생이 선생 위에 있지 않다. 학생은 선생을 따르고 존경해야 한다. 그것이 학생의 위치에서 바른 자세다. 주인과 종의 관계가 있다. 종은 주인을 잘 섬겨야 한다. 그는 주인을 존경하고, 주인의 뜻을 따라야 할 위치에 있다. 보내는 사람은 자기의 뜻을 두고 메신저를 보낸다. 따라서 보냄 받은 사람은 보낸 사람의 뜻을 받들어 섬겨야 한다. 그는 보낸 사람보다 크지 않다.
예수님은 제자들을 보내셨다. 보냄 받은 사람들은 보내신 예수님보다 크지 않다. 제자들을 보내신 예수님은 크고 위대하신 주님이시고 하나님의 아들 구원자다. 제자들은 주님을 섬기고, 존귀하게 하고, 영화롭게 하고, 기쁘게 하고, 순종해야 한다. 주님의 보냄을 받은 종들은 주님보다 크지 않다. 주의 종들은 이것을 명확하게 알아야 한다(17). 그래서 그들은 보내신 주님의 뜻을 이루기 위해서 최선을 다해야 한다. 주의 종으로서 신실하게 자기 사명을 다해야 한다. 그러면 그들은 복이 있는 사람들이다.
예수님은 제자들을 보내셨다. 하지만 주님은 12명을 다 말하지 않으셨다. 예수님은 자기가 택한 사람들을 아셨다. 하나님은 택하신 아브라함을 아셨다. 하나님은 택하신 모세와 다윗을 아셨다. 마음을 보시고 모든 사람을 아시는 예수님은 나를 택하셨다. 예수님은 택하신 나를 아신다. 주님은 택함 받은 나를 통해서 자기의 뜻을 이루신다. 하지만 예수님과 함께 떡을 먹은 사람들 가운데에 배신자가 있다. 그 사람이 가룟 유다이다. 가룟 유다의 배신은 성경의 성취다(시 41:9). 성경의 예언은 예수님의 삶에서 성취되었다. 성경은 반드시 성취된다. 모든 성경은 예수 그리스도를 통해서 성취된다. 성경의 성취는 인간이 막을 수 없다. 성경은 전능하시고 신실하신 하나님의 말씀이기 때문이다.
예수님은 미래의 일을 말씀하신다. 그 이유는 예수님의 말씀이 이루어졌을 때에, 예수님이 하나님의 아들 그리스도 주이심을 믿게 하기 위해서다(19). 우리는 주님의 말씀을 믿어야 한다. 성경은 믿음의 말씀이다. 그래서 주의 말씀을 믿는 자가 복이 있다. 주의 말씀은 믿는 대로 이루어 진다. 성경은 주 예수를 구주로 믿으면 구원을 받는다고 말한다. 우리가 그 말씀을 그대로 믿으면 구원을 받는다. 천지는 하나님이 말씀으로 창조하셨다고 성경은 말한다. 우리는 성경대로 믿어야 한다. 성경은 예수님이 다시 오신다고 말한다. 우리는 성경대로 다시 오실 주님을 믿고 맞이할 준비해야 한다.
보내는 사람와 보냄 받은 사람들이 있다. 예수님은 제자들을 보낸다. 제자들은 예수님이 보낸 사람들이다. 우리는 예수님이 보낸 사람과 예수님과의 관계를 알아야 한다. 하나님의 아들 메시야인 예수님이 진실로 진실로 제자들에게 말씀한다. 예수님이 보낸 사람을 영접하는 사람은 예수님을 영접하는 사람이다(20). 예수님은 12제자들을 세상에 보내셨다. 주님의 제자들은 스스로 간 것이 아니다. 주님이 보내서 갔다. 그들은 주님을 대신하는 사람들이다. 주의 제자들은 주님을 대신하여 주의 말씀을 전한다. 하나님은 에스겔에게 하나님을 대신하여 말씀을 전하라고 했다(겔 3:17). 선지자들은 자기들을 보내신 하나님을 대신하여 말씀을 전하는 사람들이다. 그들은 보냄 받은 사람들이다.
우리는 성경과 주님의 말씀에 귀를 기울여야 한다. 주님은 자기의 종들을 통해서 일하신다. 주의 종들은 주님이 보낸 사람들이다. 그들은 주님을 대신하여 주의 말씀을 전한다. 목회자, 선교사, 그리고 말씀 사역자들은 말씀을 전하라는 사명을 주님으로부터 받은 사람들이다. 그래서 주님은 보냄 받은 제자들을 영접하는 것은 주님을 영접하는 것이라고 말한다. 우리는 믿음으로 성령을 받은 신령한 사람들이다. 우리는 성령의 공동체인 교회의 지체들이다. 교회는 세상에 속한 공동체가 아니다. 주님께 속한 영적인 공동체다. 우리는 교회와 사역자, 그리고 성도들을 신령한 시각으로 보아야 한다. 우리는 주님의 사역자들을 인간적이고 세상적인 관점에서 보면 안된다. 사역자들은 인간적인 약점과 부족함이 있을지라도 주님이 보낸 사람들이다. 따라서 그들을 영접하는 것은 주님을 영접하는 것이다. 우리가 주님을 영접하는 것은 주님을 보내신 하나님을 영접하는 것이다(20).
우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리가 하나님과 주님을 영접하는 길은 결국 주님이 보낸 종들을 영접하는 것이다. 주의 종들을 영접하는 사람은 그들을 보낸 주님과 주님을 보낸 하나님을 영접하는 것과 연결되어 있다. 주님의 사역자들이 전하는 말은 주님의 말씀과 일치한다. 주의 사역자들은 자기 말을 전하지 않는다. 그들은 자기들을 보낸 주님의 말씀을 전한다. 따라서 주님의 종들을 영접하는 사람은 곧 주님을 영접하는 사람이다. 우리는 주님을 영접하듯이 주의 사역자들을 영접해야 한다. 왜냐하면 그것이 주님의 명령이요 가르침이기 때문이다. 우리는 주님의 사역자들을 영접하면서 주님을 영접하고 동시에 주님을 보내신 하나님을 영접한다는 사실을 잊지 말아야 한다. 그것은 사람의 가르침이 아니다. 그것은 주의 명령이요 가르침이다. 우리는 주님의 가르침을 멸시하지 말고 존중히 여겨야 한다.
Those Who Welcome Jesus (John 13:16-20)
The U.S. ambassador of South Korea is sent by the president to represent the United States. They work on behalf of the U.S. and the president. But their position is not above that of the president. Today’s passage shows us the people who welcome Jesus. The Bible teaches us how to welcome him.
According to social organization and structure, a servant is not greater than their master (v.16). Students learn from teachers. They are not above their teachers. They ought to follow and honor their teachers. Such is the appropriate manner and conduct as a student. There is a master-servant relationship. A servant must serve their master well. They are in the position to honor their master and follow them. The one who sends a messenger does so with a specific intent. Therefore, the one who has been sent should uphold their master’s will and serve them. They are not greater than their sender.
Jesus sent his disciples. Those who were sent are not greater than Jesus who sent them. Jesus who sent them is the great and mighty Lord, the Son of God, and the Savior. The disciples had to serve, honor, glorify, and please the Lord. The servants who were sent by Jesus are not greater than him. The servants had to clearly know this (v.17). They had to devote themselves to fulfilling the will of the Lord who sent them. Likewise, we must devote ourselves to our calling and mission as servants of the Lord. Then we will be blessed.
Jesus sent his disciples. However, he did not refer to all twelve disciples. Jesus knew whom he had chosen. God knew Abraham whom he chose. He knew Moses and David whom he chose. Jesus who sees the heart and knows all people chose us. And he who chose us knows us. He fulfills his will through us who have been chosen. However, there was one of the disciples who was a traitor. He was Judas Iscariot. Judas’ betrayal is the fulfillment of the Scripture (Psalm 41:9). The prophecies of the Scripture were fulfilled in Jesus’ life. The Scripture surely gets fulfilled. The entire Scripture is fulfilled through Jesus Christ. Humans cannot prevent the fulfillment of the Bible. For the Bible is the word of God, who is almighty and faithful.
Jesus talked about what will take place in the future. It was so that when his word is fulfilled, the disciples may believe that he is the Christ, Son of God (v.19). We must believe in the word of the Lord. The Bible is the word of faith. Therefore, those who believe in the word of the Lord are blessed. The word of the Lord gets fulfilled according to our faith. The Scripture tells us that we will be saved when we believe in the Lord Jesus as the Savior. When we believe the Word as is, we receive salvation. The Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth through the word. We must believe as it is written in the Bible. The Bible says that Jesus will return. So we must believe in the Lord who will return according to the Bible and be prepared to welcome him.
There is a sender and a recipient. Jesus sent his disciples. The disciples were sent by Jesus. We should know the relationship between Jesus and those he sent. Jesus the Messiah and Son of God, truly tells his disciples. Those who welcome the people sent by Jesus welcome Jesus himself (v.20). Jesus sent his twelve disciples to the world. The disciples did not go on their own. They went because they were sent by Jesus. They preached the gospel of the Lord on the Lord’s behalf. God told Ezekiel to speak to the people on God’s behalf (Ezekiel 3:17). The prophets were those who spoke the word on behalf of God who sent them. They were the people who were sent.
We must pay careful attention to the Scripture and the word of the Lord. The Lord works through his servants. His servants are people who have been sent. They preach the word of the Lord on his behalf. Pastors, missionaries, and ministers of the Word all have received calling to preach the word of God. Therefore, Jesus says that welcoming the disciples who have been sent is welcoming him. We are spiritual people who have received the Holy Spirit through faith. We are members of the church, the community of the Holy Spirit. The Church is not a community belonging to the world. It is a spiritual community belonging to the Lord. We must have a spiritual view toward the church, ministers, and believers. We must not view or consider the ministers from a worldly perspective. Though the ministers may have weaknesses and shortcomings, they are the people sent by the Lord. Therefore, when we welcome them, we welcome the Lord. Welcoming Jesus is welcoming God who sent him (v.20).
We must remember that the way to welcome God and Jesus is to welcome the servants that the Lord has sent. Welcoming the Lord’s servants is linked to welcoming Jesus who sent them and God who sent Jesus. What the Lord’s ministers preach align with the word of the Lord. The ministers of the Lord do not speak on their own. They speak the word of the Lord who sent them. Therefore, those who welcome the Lord’s servants welcome the Lord. As we welcome Jesus, we must welcome his ministers. For that is the Lord’s command and teaching. We must never forget that as we welcome the ministers of the Lord, we simultaneously welcome the Lord as well as God who sent the Lord Jesus. This is not a teaching of a human. It is the Lord’s command and teaching. We must not despise the Lord’s teaching but honor it.
