다윗 왕의 신하들 중에 아히도벨이 있었다. 그는 다윗의 전략가였다. 그는 다윗과 함께 나라 일을 의논하고 계획했다. 하지만 그는 나중에 다윗을 배신했다. 그는 압살롬에게 다윗을 죽일 계략을 제안했다. 예수님의 제자들 중에도 배신자가 있다. 예수님의 제자로서 3년을 같이 한 사람이었다. 오늘 본문은 그 배신자를 말하고 있다.
예수님은 마음에 큰 고통을 느끼셨다(21). 왜냐하면 주님의 제자들 중 한 사람이 주님을 팔 것이기 때문이다. 배신은 마음에 엄청난 상처와 고통을 준다. 특히 배신은 정신적, 심리적인 타격을 준다. 가까운 사람으로부터의 배신은 충격이 엄청나다. 사랑하는 자녀의 배신은 부모에게 견디기 어려운 상처를 가한다. 배신당한 부모는 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 낫다고 생각한다. 자녀에 대한 모든 희망과 기대가 한 순간에 무너진다. 배신은 이처럼 감당하기 힘든 고통과 상처를 준다. 예수님은 제자들 가운데 하나가 자신을 팔 것을 알고 계셨다. 주님은 그것을 생각하면서 괴로워하고 계신다.
부모에게 마음의 큰 고통과 상처를 주는 자녀는 바른 자녀가 아니다. 자녀는 마땅히 부모를 공경하고 기쁘게 해 드려야 한다. 부모는 자녀를 보면서 마음에 즐거움과 평안함을 느껴야 한다. 부모의 마음에 못을 박고 괴롭게 하는 것은 옳은 일이 아니다. 주님의 제자는 마땅히 주님을 공경하고, 순종하고, 섬기고, 기쁘게 해드려야 한다. 그것이 제자의 본분이기 때문이다. 그런데 주님의 마음에 큰 아픔을 주는 제자가 있다. 우리는 주님을 영화롭게, 존귀하게, 또 기쁘시게 해 드리는 제자가 되어야 한다. 그것이 제자의 길이기 때문이다.
예수님의 제자들은 서로를 보면서 궁금하게 여겼다(21). 그들은 예수님이 말한 제자가 ‘누구지, 누가 예수님을 팔 사람이야, 우리 중에 누가 이런 일을 하지’ 하면서 서로를 쳐다 보았다. 그들은 확실하게 알기를 원했다. 그것은 중대한 문제이기 때문이다. 사람들은 어떤 중대한 문제는 큰 관심을 갖고 확실히 알기를 바란다. 바로 그 때에 베드로가 나섰다. 베드로는 몹시 궁금해서 확인하기를 원했다(24). 베드로는 예수님을 팔아 넘길 제자가 과연 누구지 라고 생각하면서, 사도 요한에게 알아 보라고 모션을 취한다. 그는 사실에 대한 확실성을 추구하고 있다. 그래서 요한은 예수님께 ‘그가 누구입니까?’라고 묻는다(25). 그는 예수님을 팔 제자가 누구인지를 직접 물었다.
예수님은 자신을 팔 제자를 알려 주셨다. 주님은 제자들에게 확실하게 드러냈다. 그것은 말이 아니었다. 주님은 직접적으로, 감정적으로, 직설적으로 알려 주지 않았다. 예수님은 한 조각 빵을 찍어서 가룟 유다에게 주셨다(26). 주님은 ‘내가 빵을 찍어서 주는 제자가 나를 팔 것이다’라고 말씀하셨다. 주님은 간접적이고, 우회적이고, 암시적인 방법을 사용했다. 주님은 나를 팔 사람은 ‘바로 너다. 바로 너 유다이다’라고 말하지 않았다. 우리는 주님의 방식을 배워야 한다. 우리는 지나치게 감정적으로 공격적으로 거칠게 행하면 안된다. 우리는 그리스도인으로서 주님을 본받아야 한다. 우리는 감정을 자제해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 순종하면서 온유하고 친절해야 한다. 우리는 극한 상황일지라도 크게 요동을 쳐서는 안된다. 우리는 주의 말씀을 생각하고 기도하면서 사랑으로 풀어 가야 한다.
예수님이 주신 빵을 받은 후에 사탄은 가룟 유다에게 들어 갔다(27). 유다에게 성령이 임한 것이 아니다. 그에게 임한 영은 악한 영이요 불순종의 영이다. 사탄은 악한 영적 존재다. 사람의 마음에 악한 생각을 준다. 사탄은 사울 왕에게 악한 마음을 주었다. 사탄은 불순종의 영이다. 사탄은 주의 말씀을 순종하지 못하게 한다. 아담은 사탄의 역사를 따라서 불순종했다. 지금도 사탄은 사람들 가운데 역사한다. 사탄은 사람들이 주를 믿지 못하게 하고, 불순종하게 하고, 악을 행하게 한다. 그는 사람들을 유혹하여 죄를 짓게 하고 파멸로 이끌어 간다. 사탄은 주의 성도들을 유혹하여 넘어지게 한다. 그는 주님과 말씀을 떠나게 한다. 가룟 유다는 사탄의 도구가 되었다. 우리는 주님의 일꾼, 성령의 도구가 되어야 한다.
주님은 유다에게 네가 할 일을 속히 하라고 말했다(27). 하지만 제자들은 주님의 말씀의 뜻을 분명하게 이해하지 못했다. 제자들은 주님이 유다에게 명절에 쓸 물건을 사라고 하시는지 혹은 가난한 사람들에게 무엇을 주라는 것으로 생각했다. 우리는 주님의 생각과 방법을 숙고해야 한다. 예수님은 배신하는 제자일지라도 그에게 온유와 사랑으로 대하셨다. 우리 역시 주님을 본받아야 한다. 우리를 대적하는 사람들에게 온유와 너그러움과 사랑을 나타내야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님을 증거하고 주의 말씀을 높여 드려야 한다. 그것이 우리의 본분이기 때문이다.
The Betrayer (John 13:21-30)
Among King David’s servants was Ahithophel. He was David’s advisor. He discussed and planned with David on national affairs. However, he later betrayed David. He advised Absalom to kill David. Even among Jesus’ disciples, there was a betrayer. As Jesus’ disciple, he followed Jesus for three years. Today’s passage talks about the betrayer.
Jesus was troubled in spirit (v.21). It was because one of the disciples was going to betray him. Betrayal causes great anguish and leaves a deep wound in our hearts. It inflicts mental and psychological harm. And if someone close betrays us, then the shock is cataclysmic. The betrayal of the dear children inflicts an unbearable harm to their parents. The parents who have been betrayed think it is better to die than to live. All their hope and expectation toward their children crumble down in a moment. Betrayal causes these unbearable pain and wounds. Jesus knew that one of his disciples would betray him. As he was contemplating this, he was deeply troubled.
Those who trouble and hurt their parents are not good children. Children ought to honor and please their parents. Parents should feel joy and peace when thinking of their children. It is not right to trouble or crush their parents’ spirit. Jesus’ disciples must rightly honor, obey, serve, and please the Lord. This is the duty of a disciple. But there was a disciple who grieved Jesus. We must become disciples who glorify, honor, and please the Lord. For this is the way of the disciple.
Jesus’ disciples looked at each other and were at a loss (v.21). They thought, ‘Who is the disciple who will betray Jesus? Who among us will do this?’ and stared at each other. They wanted to know because it was a crucial problem. People take great interest in grave matters and want to know about them. Peter was also very curious and wanted to ask about it (v.24). He wondered who would betray Jesus, so he motioned to John to ask him. Peter is pursuing certainty of the fact. So John asked Jesus, ‘Lord, who is it?’ (v.25). He asked Jesus directly which of the disciples would betray him.
Jesus told them who would betray him. He clearly made it known to the disciples. But he did not do so with explicit words. He did not make it known directly. He took a piece of bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot. Jesus said, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the dish” (v.26). Jesus made it known indirectly and implicitly. He did not say, ‘It is you, Judas’. We must learn from Jesus. We should not approach situations emotionally or aggressively. As Christians, we should follow Jesus’ example. We must control our emotions. We must be gentle and kind in obedience to the word of the Lord. Even in desperate situations, our mood should not easily swing. We must solve problems in love with prayer.
After Judas received the piece of bread, Satan entered him (v.27). It was not the Holy Spirit that came to Judas. Instead it was the evil spirit, the spirit of disobedience. Satan is an evil spirit. It gives evil thoughts to people. Satan gave Saul evil thoughts. Satan is a spirit of disobedience. It prevents people from obeying the word of God. Adam followed Satan and disobeyed. Even now, Satan works inside people. It prevents people from believing in Jesus , makes people disobey, and encourages evil. It tempts people into sin and leads them to destruction. Satan tempts the believers to make them fall. It makes people distance themselves from the word of God. Judas Iscariot was Satan’s instrument. We must become instruments of the Lord and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus told Judas to do what he is about to do quickly (v.27). But the disciples did not clearly understand the meaning of his words. They thought that Jesus was telling him to buy things needed for the festival or to give something to the poor. We must contemplate Jesus’ thoughts and ways. Jesus treated Judas gently and in love though he was a traitor. We also should follow Jesus’ example. We should display gentleness, generosity, and love to people who oppose us. And by doing so, we should testify about the Lord and exalt his word. For this is our duty.
