하나님이 이스라엘 백성에게 율법을 주었다. 구약의 선지자들은 그 율법을 지키라고 가르쳤다. 구약은 유대인들에게 주어졌다. 구약은 예수 그리스도를 통해서 성취되었다. 그리스도를 통해서 성취된 복음은 만민을 위한 것이다. 본문은 구약 곧 율법과 선지자의 글을 이루신 예수님이 제자들에게 주시는 새 계명을 말한다.
가룟 유다는 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 나갔다(31). 그 때에 예수님은 말씀하셨다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들 그리스도 주님이시다. 예수님은 성경의 예언대로 세상에 오셨다. 예수님은 성경대로 사시고, 죽으시고, 부활하셨다. 그래서 예수님은 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 이루셨다. 주님은 이제 그 뜻을 이루실 때가 온 것을 아셨다. 가룟 유다는 돈을 받고 예수님을 팔아 넘겼다. 그는 마귀의 일을 한 것이다. 하지만 주님은 가룟 유다의 배신이 하나님의 말씀과 뜻을 이루는 길임을 아셨다. 예수님이 오신 목적은 자기를 보내신 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 이루는 것이다. 그것은 속죄와 영생이다. 유다의 배신은 결국 예수님을 십자가의 죽음에 이르게 했다. 그 십자가는 속죄의 십자가다. 주님이 오신 목적은 사람들의 죄를 깨끗하게 씻어서 구원하는 것이다.
예수님은 가룟 유다가 나가서 주님을 팔아 넘긴 것은 곧 하나님의 뜻과 구속의 성취의 길임을 아셨다. 그래서 주님은 “인자(예수님)가 영광을 받았고 하나님도 인자로 말미암아 영광을 받으셨다”(31)고 말한다. 예수님의 십자가와 부활은 주님이 영광을 받으시는 길이다. 주님은 십자가와 부활을 통해서 아버지의 뜻을 이루셨다. 그래서 주님은 하나님과 사람으로부터 영광을 받으셨다. 만일 예수님이 십자가에서 죽지 않으셨다면 하나님 말씀과 뜻이 이루어지지 않는다. 그 결과 우리의 구원도 영생도 없게 된다. 주님은 영광을 받지 못하실 것이다. 하지만 예수님은 십자가의 순종으로 영광을 받으셨다. 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 이루신 예수님의 십자가는 하나님을 영화롭게 했다(빌 2:8-11). 하나님 아버지는 아들이신 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 영광을 받으셨다. 그래서 하나님은 사랑하는 아들 예수 그리스도에게 영광을 주셨다(32). 결국 아들은 아버지를 영화롭게 하고 아버지는 아들을 영화롭게 한다. 우리가 주님을 영화롭게 하면 주님은 우리를 영화롭게 한다. 우리는 주님으로부터 영광을 얻기 위하여 주님을 영화롭게 해야 한다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 순종하면 하나님 아버지와 주님은 영광을 받으신다. 그리고 하나님은 우리가 주님과 함께 영광을 받게 한다.
예수님은 잠시 후에 제자들을 떠나신다. 주님은 아버지의 뜻과 자기 사명을 완수하고 세상을 떠나서 다시 아버지 하나님께로 가신다. 주님이 가시는 곳은 유대인들이 따라 올 수 없다(33). 주님은 아버지의 뜻을 다 이루시고 제자들에게 새 계명을 주셨다. 새 계명은 제자들이 지켜야 할 계명이다. 그것은 주님을 믿고 구원받은 성도들이 지켜야 할 계명이다. 새 계명은 그리스도와 교회 안에 있는 그리스도인들에게 주어진 것이다. 우리는 주님이 주신 새 계명을 반드시 지켜야 한다. 교회의 머리 되시고 몸의 구주가 되시는 주님이 주신 새 계명은 무엇인가? 그것은 서로 사랑하라는 계명이다. 예수님은 제자들에게 말한다. “너희는 서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라”(34).
우리는 주님의 제자들이다. 주님의 제자들은 한 몸 공동체다. 우리는 그리스도 안에서 하나다. 우리는 하나님 아버지의 자녀들이다. 우리는 주 안에서 형제 자매다. 우리는 하나님 아버지의 한 가족 공동체다. 그래서 우리는 주님이 주신 계명대로 서로 사랑해야 한다. 예수님은 자기의 피로 구속하신 하나님의 자녀들이 서로 사랑하기를 원하신다. 그것은 부모가 수고롭게 낳고 기른 자녀들이 서로 사랑하며 살기를 원하는 것과 같다.
우리는 어떻게 서로 사랑해야 하는가? 우리는 예수님이 나를 사랑한 것처럼 사랑해야 한다. 우리는 하나님의 아들 구주께서 우리를 사랑한대로 서로 사랑해야 한다. 사랑의 기준은 예수님의 사랑이다. 주님은 말씀한다. “나는 선한 목자라 선한 목자는 양들을 위하여 목숨을 버리노라”(요 10:11). 우리는 선한 목자 예수님이 양인 나를 위해 목숨을 버리셨다는 사실을 기억해야 한다. 우리는 주님이 죄인 된 나를 살리기 위하여 목숨을 버리신 것처럼 서로 사랑해야 한다. 사도 요한은 말한다. “그가(예수님) 우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨으니 우리가 이로써 사랑을 알고 우리도 형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅하니라”(요일 3:16). 주님께서 우리를 위해 목숨을 버리신 것은 명백하다. 우리는 주님이 우리를 사랑하신 것처럼 형제와 자매를 사랑해야 한다. 우리는 형제와 자매를 위해 목숨을 버려기까지 사랑해야 한다. 이것은 주님의 새 계명이다. 목숨보다 소중한 것은 없다. 우리는 가장 귀한 것을 내어 주면서 형제를 사랑해야 한다. 우리는 초대교회 성도들처럼 우리의 소유와 모든 소중한 것들을 형제들을 위해서 내어 놓아야 한다. 왜냐하면 그것이 주님이 주신 새 계명이기 때문이다. 주님은 자기의 가장 소중한 목숨을 나를 위해 버리셨다. 우리도 주님처럼 사랑해야 한다.
우리가 주님이 사랑한 것처럼 서로 사랑하면 모든 사람은 우리가 주님의 제자임을 알게 된다. 왜냐하면 우리가 주님이 사랑한대로 우리도 서로 사랑했기 때문이다. 우리는 주님의 제자로서 예수님을 본받아야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님을 증거해야 한다. 만일 우리가 주님이 사랑한 것처럼 서로 사랑하지 않으면 우리가 주님의 제자인지를 알지 못할 것이다. 우리는 새 계명을 순종하자. 그래서 우리는 주님이 나를 사랑하신 대로 서로 사랑하자. 그래서 우리는 주님의 제자된 삶을 살자.
New Commandment (John 13:31-35)
God gave the law to the Israelites. The prophets of the Old Testament taught people to keep the law. The Old Testament was given to the Jews. It was fulfilled through Jesus Christ. The gospel, which was fulfilled through Christ, is for all people. Today’s passage talks about the new command that Jesus, who fulfilled the Old Testament, that is, the Law and the Prophets, is giving to the disciples.
Now Judas Iscariot heard what Jesus said and left the place (v.31). Then Jesus said that he is Christ the Lord, the Son of God. He came to the world according to the Scriptures. Jesus lived, died, and resurrected according to the Bible. And thus, Jesus fulfilled the will of the Father. Jesus knew that the time had come to fulfill His will. Judas Iscariot sold Jesus for money. He did an evil thing. However, Jesus knew that Judas’ betrayal was the way to fulfill God’s word and will. Jesus’ purpose for coming to the world was to fulfill the will of the Father who sent him. His will was forgiveness of sin and eternal life. Judas’ betrayal eventually led Jesus to die on the cross. The cross is the cross of forgiveness. Jesus’ purpose for coming to the world was to wash away people’s sins and save them.
Jesus knew that Judas’ betrayal by handing him over was the way to fulfill God’s will and redemption. So he says. “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him” (v.31). Jesus’ cross and resurrection are the way for God to be glorified. Jesus fulfilled the will of the Father through cross and resurrection. Therefore, he received glory from God and people. If Jesus had not died on the cross, God’s word and will would not have been fulfilled. As a result, we would not have salvation nor eternal life. And Jesus would not have received glory. However, Jesus was glorified through the obedience of the cross. Jesus, who fulfilled the Father’s will, glorified him (Philippians 2:8-11). The Father was glorified through the Son, Jesus Christ. Therefore, God gave glory to his Son Jesus Christ (v.32). Eventually, the Son glorified the Father and the Father glorified the Son. When we glorify our Lord, then the Lord glorifies us. To receive glory from the Lord, we should glorify him. When we obey the word of the Lord, the Father and our Lord Jesus receive glory. And God makes us receive glory with the Lord.
Jesus was leaving the disciples in a little while. He fulfilled the Father’s will and his calling, and he was leaving the world to return to the Father. Where Jesus was going, the Jews could not follow (v.33). Jesus fulfilled the Father’s will and gave his disciples a new command. This new command was what the disciples had to keep. This command is what we the believers and those who have been saved must abide by. The new command has been given to the Christians who are in the church. We must keep the new command the Lord gave us. What is the new command that Jesus, who is the head of the church and our Savior, has given us? It is to love one another. Jesus tells the disciples, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (v.34).
We are Jesus’ disciples. And the disciples are a one body community. We are one in Christ. We are God the Father’s children. We are brothers and sisters in the Lord. We are a family community of the Father. Therefore, we must love one another according to the command given by the Lord. Jesus wants the children of God, whom he redeemed through his own blood, to love one another. It is the same as how parents want their children, whom they gave birth to and raised, to love each other.
How must we love? We must love as Jesus loved us. We must love one another as the Savior, the Son of God, loved us. The standard of love is that of Jesus. Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). We must remember that Jesus the good shepherd laid down his life for us, his sheep. As Jesus forsook his life to save us sinners, we must love one another. Apostle John says, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 John 3:16). It is clear that Jesus gave up his life. We must love our brothers and sisters as Jesus loved us. We must love, even to the point of laying down our life, for our brothers and sisters. This is Jesus’ new command. There is nothing more precious than life. And we must love our brothers and sisters by giving the most precious things. Just as the First Church did, we should share our possessions and precious things with brothers and sisters. For that is the new command the Lord gave us. Jesus laid down his life, the most precious thing, for us. And we ought to love like Jesus.
When we love one another just like Jesus, all people will know that we are his disciples. For we would love one another just as Jesus did. As Jesus’ disciples, we must follow the example of Jesus. And we must testify about Jesus. If we do not love one another as the Lord has done, people will not know that we are his disciples. Let us obey the new command, loving one another as Jesus has loved us. Thereby, let us live as the Lord’s disciples.
