하나님은 모세를 애굽으로 보내셔서 이스라엘 백성을 가나안땅으로 인도하라고 명령했다. 모세는 바로 왕에게 이스라엘 백성을 보내라고 말했다. 바로 왕은 이스라엘을 보내지 않았다. 그래서 하나님은 여러 가지 재앙을 애굽에 내렸다. 결국 바로는 이스라엘을 보냈다. 이것은 무엇을 의미하는가? 그것은 하나님 말씀의 실현을 의미한다. 하나님은 아브라함에게 말씀했다. 하나님은 그의 후손이 이방에서 400년 동안 있다가 나올 것이라고 말했다. 그 말씀은 출애굽을 통해서 이루어졌다. 우리는 주의 말씀의 권능을 알아야 한다.
예수님은 제자들을 떠나서 가겠다고 말했다(33). 그러자 베드로가 나선다. 베드로는 주님이 가시는 곳이 궁금했다. 그는 ‘주님 어디로 가시지요’라고 물었다. 물론 그것은 당연한 질문이었다. 주님이 가시는 곳에 대해서, 제자들이 어떤 생각이 없다는 것이 더 이상하다. 엄마가 자녀를 두고 멀리 떠나는 데, 궁금하지 않을 수 없다. 베드로는 주님이 가시는 곳을 알기를 원했다. 주님은 베드로에게 말했다. ‘내가 가는 곳에 지금은 네가 따라 올 수 없지만 후에는 따라 오리라’(36). 예수님은 성경대로 하나님의 보내심을 받아 세상에 오셨다. 이 세상에 오신 주님은 자기 사명을 완수했다. 예수님은 십자가에서 죽기까지 하나님의 말씀을 순종했다. 그래서 주님은 하나님의 뜻을 성취했다. 주님은 우리를 구원하는 사역을 완수했다. 사람으로 오셔서 자기 사명을 이루신 예수님은 다시 하나님 아버지께로 가신다. 주님은 부활 승천하셔서 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉으신다. 예수님은 세상에 계속 머물러 계시지 않는다. 그래서 주님은 베드로에게 주님이 가시는 천국에는 지금은 따라 올 수 없다고 하신 것이다.
하지만 베드로는 주님께 묻는다. ‘주님 내가 지금은 어찌하여 따라갈 수 없습니까’(37). 베드로는 예수님과 항상 함께 있기를 소망했다. 주님은 베드로에게 지금은 따라 올 수 없다고 말했다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 베드로는 주님의 말씀에 ‘아멘’으로 받아들이는 것이 더 옳았다. 베드로는 예수님의 말씀을 그대로 받아들이는 것이 어려웠다. 그래서 베드로는 자기의 생각과 의견과 각오를 말했다. 사실 이러한 태도는 주님의 말씀 앞에 어리석은 것이다. 왜냐하면 내 생각, 의견, 주장, 각오나 말이 주님의 말씀보다 앞서지 못하기 때문이다. 우리는 주님의 말씀 앞에 겸손해야 한다. 우리는 주의 말씀에 오직 아멘으로 대답해야 한다. 아브라함은 독자 이삭을 바치라는 하나님의 말씀에 그대로 순종했다. 아브라함은 ‘내가 왜 바쳐야 합니까. 주님이 약속하셔서 주셨으면서 또 바치라는 이유가 무엇입니까’라고 묻지 않았다. 그는 아멘하고 순종했다. 아브라함은 하나님의 말씀의 권능을 알고 있었다.
우리는 주님의 말씀의 권위와 권능을 알아야 한다. 주님의 입에서 나오는 말은 전능의 말씀, 구원의 말씀이다. 우리는 주의 말씀을 거부할 수가 없다. 주의 말씀은 그대로 이루어진다. 우리는 내 생각대로가 아니라 주님의 생각대로 되고, 내 계획이 아니라 주님의 계획대로 된다는 사실을 기억해야 한다. 베드로는 말한다. ‘주를 위하여 내 목숨을 버리겠나이다’ 베드로의 이러한 각오는 인간적으로는 적절하다. 하지만 그것은 베드로의 생각이다. 그것은 베드로를 향한 주님의 생각이 아니다. 우리를 위해서 목숨을 버리신 주님을 위해 목숨을 버린다는 믿음은 바람직하다. 하지만 베드로는 주님의 말씀을 수용하지 않고 있다는 사실이다.
주님은 베드로를 향한 생각과 계획을 가지고 있다. 베드로는 주님의 제자로서의 주님이 주신 사명을 다해야 한다. 사도행전에 기록된 것처럼 베드로는 주의 복음을 전하고 하나님 나라를 확장하는 사역을 이루어야 한다. 그 후에 베드로는 세상을 떠나서 주님께로 갈 수 있다. 베드로는 부활하신 주님과 함께 바로 천국으로 가면 안 된다. 우리 역시 주님이 주신 사명을 다해야 한다. 우리는 나를 향한 주님의 뜻과 계획을 성취해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 말씀에 순종해야 한다. 그런 다음에 우리는 주님이 계신 천국에 갈 수 있다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “베드로야 네가 나를 위해서 목숨을 버리겠느냐 내가 진실로 진실로 네게 이르노니 닭 울기 전에 네가 세번 나를 부인하리라” 이것은 베드로를 향한 주님의 말씀이다. 주님의 말씀은 반드시 이루어 진다. 결국 베드로의 말대로 되지 않았다. 주님의 말씀대로 베드로는 예수님을 세번 부인했다. 주님의 말씀이 이루어 진다. 베드로의 생각과 각오와 말은 주님의 말씀 앞에 무력하다. 우리는 주님의 말씀에 순종해야 한다. 우리는 나의 모든 생각과 의견과 각오를 버리고 주의 말씀에 아멘하여 순종하자. 우리는 주의 말씀의 권능을 알고 겸손하자. 주님의 말씀이 나의 삶을 통해서 이루어지는 삶을 살자.
The Power of the Word (John 13:36-38)
God sent Moses to Egypt and commanded him to lead the Israelites to the land of Canaan. So Moses told Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. But Pharaoh did not let them go. So God sent various plagues on Egypt. In the end, Pharoah sent them away. What does this signify? It signifies the fulfillment of the Word of God. God told Abraham that his descendents will live in a foreign land for four hundred years, after which they will come out of the land. God’s Word was fulfilled through the exodus. We should know the power of the Word of the Lord.
Jesus told the disciples that he will leave them (v.33). Then Peter was curious where Jesus was going. He asked, “Lord, where are you going?” This was a valid question. It would rather be odd if the disciples were uninterested about where Jesus was going. It is like when a mother leaves her child to go somewhere far and the child is rightly curious about where the mother is going. Peter wanted to know the place where Jesus was going. Jesus said to Peter, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later” (v.36). Jesus came to the world, sent by God, according to the Scripture. And Jesus, who came to the world, fulfilled his calling. Jesus obeyed the Word of God even to death on the cross. In this way, he fulfilled God’s will. Jesus completed the ministry of our salvation. Jesus who came as a human was going back to the Father. He was going to be raised to life, ascend, and sit on the right hand of the throne of God. Jesus does not stay in this world. So Jesus told Peter that he cannot follow him to heaven, where he was going, now.
However, Peter asked the Lord, “Why can’t I follow you now?” (v37). Peter always wished to stay with Jesus. However, the Lord told Peter that he cannot follow now. We must remember that it would have been more proper for Peter to accept what Jesus said with Amen. It was difficult for Peter to accept what Jesus told him. So he spoke up with his own thoughts, opinions and determination. However, this kind of attitude is foolish before the Word of the Lord because our thoughts, opinions and determination cannot override the Word of the Lord. We have to be humble before the Word of God. We must accept the Word of the Lord with Amen. Abraham obeyed God’s word to sacrifice his only son. Abraham did not complain, “Why do I have to sacrifice my son? Why are you asking me to sacrifice my son you gave me with a promise?” Instead, he obeyed with Amen. Abraham knew the power of the Word of God.
We must know the authority and power of the Word of the Lord. The words that come out of the Lord are the words of omnipotence and salvation. We cannot deny the Word of the Lord. The Word of the Lord always comes true. We must remember that things happen not according to our own thoughts but according to the Lord’s, and not according to our own plans but according to the Lord’s plans. Peter said, “I will lay down my life for you.” Such determination may seem appropriate, but it is only his thought. It wasn’t a thought for the Lord. Wanting to lay down our lives for the Lord who laid down his for us is great faith. However, the issue here is that Peter was not accepting the Word of the Lord that Jesus was telling him at the time.
The Lord has thoughts and plans for Peter. Peter must do his best to fulfill his calling as the Lord’s disciple. As recorded in Acts, Peter must fulfill the calling to spread the Lord’s gospel and expand the kingdom of heaven. Only afterwards, can Peter leave the world and go to the Lord. The plan was not for Peter to go back to heaven with the Lord when Jesus was crucified. We also must be faithful to our calling. We must fulfill the Lord’s will and plans toward us. We must submit to the Word of the Lord. Only after we fulfill the Lord’s will, will we go to heaven where the Lord is.
Jesus said, “Peter, will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, you will deny me three times before the rooster crows.” This is the word of the Lord spoken about Peter. This comes true no matter what. It didn’t happen as Peter had determined. Rather, Peter ended up denying Jesus three times according to Jesus’ word. It is the Lord’s word that prevails. Peter’s thought and determination are ineffective before the Word of the Lord. We must obey the Word of the Lord. Let us put away our own thoughts, opinions and determination, but obey the Word of the Lord with Amen. Let us understand the power of the Word of the Lord and be humble. Let us live a life in which we fulfill the Word of the Lord.
