어떤 아버지가 홀로 미국에 왔다. 그는 열심히 일을 해서 집을 마련했다. 그는 그의 가족을 모두 미국으로 불러 들였다. 그래서 그 가족은 미국에서 살았다. 오늘 본문 성경은 우리가 예수님과 함께 영원히 살 집에 대해서 말한다. 예수님은 제자들을 떠나서 아버지의 집으로 갈 것이다. 주님이 가시는 집은 우리가 주님과 함께 살게 되는 천국이다.
자녀를 두고 떠나는 부모는 마음에 근심이 가득하다. 또한 집에 남게 되는 자녀의 근심은 크다. 부모는 자녀에게 곧 돌아 올 것이라고 말한다. 예수님은 제자들에게 근심하지 말라고 말한다. 주님은 제자들을 떠나서 하늘에 계신 아버지께로 가신다. 이 상황에서 제자들은 몹시 근심하고 있다. 그래서 주님은 제자들을 위로하면서 근심하지 말고 하나님과 자신을 믿으라고 말한다(1). 예수님은 믿음을 가지고 염려를 극복하라고 말씀하신다.
우리는 살면서 염려한다. 우리가 여러 가지 상황과 문제를 만나면서 마음에 근심한다. 우리가 마음에 염려가 생길 때에 어떻게 해야 하는가? 성경은 근심을 이기는 길은 믿음이라고 말한다. 주님은 우리가 사는 데 필요한 문제에 대해서 염려하지 말라고 말한다(마 6:25-34). 주님은 우리에게 하늘에 계신 아버지께서 필요한 모든 것을 공급하실 것을 믿으라고 말한다. 주님은 그 믿음으로 염려를 극복하라고 말한다. 다윗은 두려워하는 날에는 주를 의지할 것이라고 말한다(시 56:3). 그는 주를 의지하여 두려움과 염려를 극복할 것이라고 말하는 것이다. 베드로는 말한다. “너희 염려를 다 주께 맡기라 이는 그가 너희를 돌보심이라”(벧전 5:7). 염려는 주를 의지하여 주님께 맡길 때에 극복할 수 있다. 우리는 믿음과 기도로 염려를 주님께 맡겨야 한다.
성경은 말한다. “아무것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라 그리하면 모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라”(빌 4:6-7). 우리는 믿음으로 하나님께 기도하면서 염려를 극복할 수 있다. 그래서 예수님은 제자들에게 하나님과 자신을 믿으라고 권면한다. 주님은 우리가 염려하면서 살기를 원하지 않는다. 주님은 우리가 주님이 주시는 은혜와 평강과 기쁨을 누리며 살기를 원하신다. 우리는 믿음으로 염려하지 않는 삶을 살아야 한다.
예수님은 제자들이 염려하지 말아야 할 이유를 설명한다. 염려는 그 이유가 있을 때에 생긴다. 염려는 그 근거가 사라지면 생기지 않는다. 렌트비를 지불하지 못하면 염려가 생긴다. 하지만 렌트비가 마련되면 염려는 사라진다. 예수님은 제자들에게 아버지의 집에 거할 곳이 많다고 말한다(2). 집이 없는 사람은 몹시 불안해 하고 염려한다. 하지만 집이 마련되면 염려는 사라진다. 이 세상에 있는 집은 사라질 것이다. 하지만 하늘에 있는 집은 사라지지 않는다. 성경은 말한다. “만일 땅에 있는 장막 집이 무너지면 하나님께서 지으신 집 곧 손으로 지은 것이 아니요 하늘에 있는 영원한 집이 우리에게 있는 줄 아느니라”(고후 5:1).
우리는 이 세상에 살면서 염려할 필요가 없다. 왜냐하면 주님 말씀처럼 예수님 아버지의 집 곧 우리의 아버지의 집이 하늘에 있기 때문이다. 그곳은 천국이다. 우리는 하나님 아버지와 주님이 계시는 천국이 있다는 사실을 굳게 믿어야 한다. 우리는 땅에 있는 모든 것이 무너지면, 무너지지 않는 영원한 집에서 살게 된다. 하나님 아버지의 집 곧 천국에 거할 곳이 많다(2). 우리는 염려없이 영원한 천국에서 살게 될 것이다.
예수님은 우리가 살 곳을 예비하신다(2). 이 세상에 있는 집은 없어진다. 그 다음에 우리는 어디에서 살 것인가? 우리는 주님이 예비하시는 천국에서 살 것이다. 그 곳은 없어지지 않는다. 그 곳은 영원히 살아 계시는 하나님 아버지와 주님이 계시는 집이기 때문이다. 사람들은 집이 있다가 없어지면 크게 염려한다. 하지만 우리는 그러한 염려를 할 필요가 없다. 주님은 우리를 위해서 영원한 집을 마련하시기 때문이다. 그 곳은 우리의 영원한 안식처다.
예수님은 우리가 살 집을 마련하신다. 또한 주님은 다시 오셔서 제자들을 영접하신다. 그래서 주님은 우리가 주님이 계신 천국에서 주님과 함께 살게 하신다(3). 우리는 이 땅에서 영원히 사는 것이 아니다. 주님이 계신 곳 천국에서 주님과 함께 영원히 살 것이다. 우리는 이 세상에서 주님과 동행한다. 우리는 이 세상을 떠나서도 주님과 함께 살 것이다. 우리는 사나 죽으나 주님과 함께 산다(롬 14:7-9; 살전 4:17). 우리는 주님의 말씀을 굳게 믿어야 한다. 우리는 주님이 마련해 주시는 천국에서 주님과 함께 영원히 살게 된다는 사실에 감사하자. 우리는 모든 염려를 다 주님께 맡기고 믿음으로 나가자.
Where We Will Dwell with Jesus (John 14:1-3)
There was a father who moved to a foreign country by himself. He worked hard and bought a house. Afterwards, he invited his family and the family lived together. Today’s passage talks about the house where we will live with Jesus eternally. Jesus was leaving the disciples to go to the Father’s house. The house where Jesus was going is the kingdom of heaven where we will live with him.
Parents who need to leave their kids somewhere are naturally worried. And the kids also are anxious when they need to separate with their parents. Parents reassure them that they will be back soon. Now Jesus told the disciples not to be worried. Jesus was leaving the disciples and going to the Father who is in heaven. The disciples were very anxious in this situation. So the Lord comforted the disciples, telling them to not be anxious but believe in God and him (v.1). Jesus told them to overcome anxiety by faith.
We worry as we live. We confront many situations and problems and become anxious a lot of the time. When we are worried, what should we do? The Bible says that the way to overcome worries is faith. Jesus tells us to not be worried about our needs (Matthew 6:25-34). He tells us to believe that our God who is in heaven will provide for our needs. He tells us to overcome worries through faith. David says that when he is afraid, he will trust in God (Psalms 56:3). He is saying that he will overcome fear and anxiety by trusting in the Lord. Peter says, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). We can overcome worries when we trust in the Lord and cast our worries to Him. By faith and prayer, we should cast our worries to the Lord.
The Bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). We are able to overcome worries by praying to God by faith. So Jesus advises the disciples to believe in God and him. Jesus does not want us to live by worrying. He wants us to enjoy the grace, peace, and joy that he gives us. We should live a worry-free life by faith.
Jesus tells the disciples the reason to not be worried. Worries have a source. When that source disappears, our worries disappear. When we cannot pay the rent, we become anxious. But when we have the means to pay the rent, our worries go away. Jesus tells the disciples that there are many rooms in the Father’s house (v.2). Those who do not have a home feel insecure and anxious. But when they find a home to live in, their worries disappear. Our house in this world will disappear. However, our house in heaven will never disappear. As the Bible says, “For we know that if the earthly tent that we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile, we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling” (2 Corinthians 5:1).
We do not need to worry about anything while living in this world. The reason is because Jesus’ Father’s house, that is, our Father’s house is in heaven as Jesus said. It is the kingdom of heaven. We must firmly believe that there is heaven where the Father and Jesus live. When everything in this world is destroyed, we will live in the eternal house that will never be destroyed. In the Father’s house, that is, in the kingdom of heaven, there are many rooms (v.2). And we will live in eternal dwelling without any worries.
Jesus prepares the place where we will dwell (v.2). The earthly house will disappear. Where do we live after that? We will live in heaven that the Lord has prepared for us. That dwelling will never disappear because it is the house where God the Father and our Lord Jesus live eternally. When we have a home but it is taken away, we become anxious and troubled. But there is no need for such worries. Jesus has prepared an eternal house for us. That place is our eternal resting place.
Jesus prepared our dwelling for us. And he will return to take his disciples with him. He makes us live in heaven, where he dwells, to be with him forever (v.3). We will not live in this world forever. But we will live with the Lord in heaven, the dwelling place of Jesus, forever. In this world we walk with Jesus. And when we leave this world, we will dwell with him. Whether we live or die, we live with him (Romans 14:7-9; 1 Thessalonians 4:17). We must firmly believe in the word of the Lord. Let us be thankful that Jesus enabled us to live eternally with the Lord in the dwelling he has prepared for us. Let us cast all our anxieties on the Lord and live on with faith.
