농부가 사과나무를 심었다. 그런데 어떤 사과나무는 죽었다. 그 사과나무는 자기 역할을 하지 못하고 열매를 맺지 못했다. 생명이 없는 나무는 쓸모가 없고 주인에게 무익하다. 하지만 다른 사과나무는 잘 자라서 열매를 맺었다. 그 나무는 생명이 있었기 때문이다. 인간도 마찬가지다. 복음에 기초하여 하나님 앞에서 생명이 있는 사람과 죽은 사람이 있다. 영적으로 살아 있는 사람은 열매를 맺고 하나님 나라에서 영원히 살 수 있다. 죽은 존재는 열매를 맺지 못한다. 그렇다면 우리가 영원한 생명을 얻고 하나님 아버지께로 가는 길은 무엇인가? 오늘 성경 본문은 그것을 알려 준다.
예수님은 제자들에게 “나 있는 곳에 너희도 있게 하리라 내가 어디로 가는지 그 길을 너희가 알리라”(3-4)고 말했다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들 그리스도로서 자기의 사명을 완수하신다. 주님은 하나님 말씀을 순종하셔서 십자가에 달려 죽으셨다. 그래서 주님은 자기를 보내신 아버지의 뜻을 다 이루셨다. 예수님은 죽은 지 3일 만에 부활하시고 승천하셨다. 주님은 승천하셔서 하나님 우편에 앉으셨다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지와 함께 계시다가 세상에 오셨다. 예수님은 다시 하나님 아버지께로 가신다. 예수님은 자기를 보내신 아버지께로 가신다. 그래서 성부와 성자는 영원히 함께 계신다. 물론 우리도 성부와 성자와 함께 영원히 살 것이다. 예수님이 가신 곳에 우리도 갈 것이다.
예수님의 말을 들은 도마가 예수님께 질문한다. “주여 주께서 어디로 가시는지 우리가 알지 못하거늘 그 길을 어찌 알겠사옵나이까”(5). 사실 예수님은 앞에서 여러 번 하나님 아버지께로 갈 것을 말했다. 예수님은 보냄을 받아서 왔고 보내신 이에게로 다시 갈 것을 말했다. 그런데 도마는 알지 못한다고 말했다. 도마는 주님이 가시는 곳에 대한 정확한 이해가 없었다. 그는 주님이 가시는 곳을 확실하게 알고 싶었다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 우리가 주님의 말씀 곧 성경을 온전히 이해할 수 없다. 그래서 우리는 성경을 더 잘 알기 위해서 노력해야 한다. 우리가 성경을 읽고 배우면서 이해되지 않고 불확실할 때에는 주님께 기도하며 명확하게 알기를 힘써야 한다(벧후 1:19). 그러면 우리의 성경 지식이 성장할 수 있다. 우리가 깨닫지 못하면 믿음의 성장도 기대하기가 어렵다(마 13:23). 우리는 멈추지 말고 계속해서 주의 말씀을 배우고 알아야 한다.
예수님은 도마의 질문에 답하신다. “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(6). 우리는 주님의 음성에 귀를 기울여 들어야 한다. 예수님은 어떤 분인가? 성경은 그것을 알려 준다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들이시다. 예수님은 메시야다. 예수님은 구주이시다. 예수님은 빛이시다. 예수님은 말씀이시다. 예수님은 믿는 자에게 하나님의 능력과 지혜요, 거룩함과 의로움과 구속함이다. 예수님은 자신이 길이요 진리요 생명이라고 말한다.
사람과 차가 다니는 곳이 길이다. 사람은 길로 다닌다. 길은 가려고 하는 목적지와 연결되어 있다. 우리가 원하는 곳에 가려면 그 길로 가야 한다. 엘에이를 가려고 하는 사람은 뉴욕으로 가지 않는다. 그는 엘에이로 가는 길을 선택한다. 우리가 하나님 아버지께로 가는 길이 있다. 우리는 그 길로 가야만 하나님이 계신 곳에 갈 수 있다. 우리가 다른 길로 가면 결코 하나님을 만날 수 없다. 우리가 하나님께로 가는 길이 있다. 그 길이 예수님이다. 우리가 예수님을 통하지 않고는 하나님 아버지께로 갈 수 없다. 예수님은 아버지께로 가는 길이다. 우리는 십자가와 부활의 주 예수를 믿어야 한다. 그래서 우리는 죄 사함을 얻고 부활의 권능에 의해서 구원을 받는다. 우리는 주를 믿음으로 말미암아 성령으로 거듭나서 영원한 생명을 얻는다. 그래서 우리는 영원히 살아 계시는 하나님 아버지가 계신 천국에 갈 수 있다. 우리는 천국으로 가는 길이 되시는 주를 믿지 않고는 하나님 아버지께로 갈 없다.
예수님은 진리이시다. 진리는 하나님 말씀과 동의어다(요 17:17). 진리인 하나님의 말씀은 거룩하다. 이 세상에는 진리가 없다. 이 세상에는 인간을 죄에서 거룩하게 하는 존재는 없다. 진리 되시는 예수님만이 우리의 죄를 씻으시고 거룩하게 하신다. 우리는 십자가의 주님이 아니면 죄의 더러움에서 벗어날 수 없다. 우리의 죄가 해결되지 않으면 하나님 아버지께로 갈 수 없다. 우리가 천국으로 가려면 진리의 주님을 믿고 순종해야 한다. 예수님은 진리 곧 진실하시다. 이 세상에는 거짓과 속임이 가득하다. 하지만 예수님은 거짓과 속임이 없다. 주님은 영원히 진실하시다. 그래서 우리는 진실하신 주님을 믿고 의지한다. 진실하신 주님이 우리를 천국으로 인도한다. 우리는 진리되신 주님을 떠나서는 천국을 갈 수 없다. 진리의 길로 행해야만 우리는 하나님 아버지게로 간다.
예수님은 생명이시다. 주님은 영원한 생명이다(요일 5:20). 우리가 영원한 생명을 얻어야 하나님께로 갈 수 있다. 죽은 존재는 생명의 주님과 함께 살 수 없다. 죄와 허물로 죽은 우리가 영원히 사는 길은 예수님이다. 예수님은 우리가 하나님 아버지와 함께 살게 하기 위해서 믿는 우리에게 생명을 주신다(요 10:28). 하나님은 우리가 영생을 얻게 하려고 예수님을 세상에 보내셨다(요 6:40). 우리가 예수님을 믿지 않고는 영생 얻을 길은 없다. 우리는 길이요 진리요 생명이 되시는 주님을 믿고 순종해야 한다. 그러면 우리는 하나님 아버지가 계시는 천국에 갈 수 없다. 우리는 그 곳에서 하나님 아버지와 주님과 함께 영원히 살게 된다. 예수님을 보내신 하나님의 뜻이 거기에 있다.
The Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:4-6)
A farmer planted apple trees. But one of them died. This tree did not live up to its job; it did not bear any fruits. Lifeless trees are useless to the owners. But other trees grew and bore fruits because they had life. The same applies to people. There are people who are dead and those who are alive before God on the basis of the gospel. Those who are spiritually alive bear fruit and can live in the kingdom of God eternally. Those who are dead, on the other hand, cannot bear fruit. Then what is the way to get eternal life and go to the Father? Today’s passage tells us this.
Jesus told his disciples, “I will take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (v.3-4). As Christ the Son of God, Jesus fulfills his calling. He obeyed God’s word and died on the cross. And thus, he fulfilled all the will of God who sent him. Jesus was raised to life after three days and ascended to heaven. Jesus ascended and sat on the right hand of the throne of God. He came to the world after being with the Father. Jesus will return to the Father. He will return to Him who sent him. Therefore, the Father and the Son are together eternally. And of course, we will also live with the Father and the Son eternally. Where Jesus went, we will go.
Now Thomas who heard Jesus asks, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (v.5). Jesus had told the disciples multiple times that he will be going to the Father. Jesus came because he was sent, and he talked about returning to the one who sent him. But Thomas said he did not know. He did not have a clear understanding about where Jesus was going. He wanted to ascertain where he was going. Likewise, it is difficult for us to perfectly know the Lord’s word, that is, the Bible. Therefore, we must make an effort to know the Bible better. When we read the Bible and do not understand or are uncertain, then we should pray to the Lord and endeavor to clearly understand (2 Peter 1:19). Then our knowledge of the Bible can grow. When we do not understand, then it is hard to expect growth in faith (Matthew 13:23). We should not stop but continue to learn and know the word of the Lord.
Jesus answers Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (v.6). We must pay careful attention to what Jesus says. Who is Jesus? That is what the Bible informs us. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus is the Savior. Jesus is the light. Jesus is the Word. To those who believe, Jesus is God’s power, wisdom, holiness, righteousness, and redemption. Jesus tells us that he is the way, the truth, and the life.
The road is where people walk and cars drive. People walk on the street. The street is connected to the destination. To go to the place we want, we must go that way. Those who want to go to LA do not go the way to New York. They take the road that leads to LA. Now there is the way to the Father. We can go to the Father’s place only through that way. When we take other paths, we cannot meet God. The way to the Father is Jesus. Except through Jesus, we cannot go to the Father. Jesus is the way to the Father. We must believe in the Lord Jesus of the cross and the resurrection. Then we receive forgiveness of sin and are saved through the power of the resurrection. We are born again through the Holy Spirit by believing in the Lord and receive eternal life. So we are able to go to heaven where the Father is eternally. Unless we believe in Jesus, who is the way to heaven, we cannot go to the Father.
Jesus is the truth. Truth is synonymous with the word of God (John 17:17). The word of God, which is the truth, is holy. There is no truth in this world. There is no being who can sanctify people from sin. Only Jesus, who is the truth, can wash our sins away and sanctify us. Without Jesus who was crucified, we cannot escape the filth of sin. And if our sin is not taken away, we cannot go to the Father. To go to heaven, we must believe in the Lord of truth and obey him. Jesus is the truth, and he is truthful. This world is full of lies and deceptions. However, there is no lie or deception in Jesus. Jesus is forever truthful. Therefore, we must believe and trust in the Lord of truth. The Lord of truth leads us to heaven. Apart from Jesus, we cannot go to heaven. Only when we walk in the way of truth can we go to the Father.
Jesus is the life. He is eternal life (1 John 5:20). We can go to the Father when we receive eternal life. Dead beings cannot live with the Lord of life. Jesus is the way for us, who died in our sin and transgression, to live eternally. Jesus gives life to us who believe so we may live with the Father (John 10:28). And God sent Jesus to the world so we may get eternal life (John 6:40). Without believing in Jesus, there is no other way to get eternal life. We must believe in and obey the Lord, who is the way and the truth and the life. Then we will live there with the Father and our Lord Jesus forever. For this is the will of God.
