엘리야가 요단강에서 자기 겉옷으로 요단강 물을 쳤다. 그러자 요단강 물이 갈라져서 마른 땅이 되었다. 엘리야와 엘리사가는 요단강을 건거갔다. 이러한 능력은 엘리야 자신에게서 나온 것일까요? 그렇다면 엘리야의 능력은 어디서 온 것일까요? 하나님이 엘리야에게 능력을 주셨기 때문이다. 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는 우리에게는 누가 능력을 주실까요? 믿는 사람은 어떤 능력을 가질까요? 오늘 본문 성경은 그것을 말해준다.
예수님은 말씀하신다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 나를 믿는 자는 내가 하는 일을 그도 할 것이요 그보다 큰 일도 하리니 이는 내가 아버지께로 감이라”(12). 예수님은 하나님의 아들 그리스도 주이시다. 주님은 거짓이 없으시다. 주님은 영원히 신실하시다. 주님은 어떤 속임도 위선도 없다. 예수님은 진리다. 진리의 주님은 진실하다. 예수님의 모든 말씀은 진실하다. 진리이신 예수님은 자기의 말이 진실이라는 것을 강조한다. 주님의 말씀은 우리가 반드시 믿어야 할 진실한 말씀이다. 세상은 거짓이 가득하다. 세상에 속한 사람들은 거짓과 속임이 있다. 그래서 세상은 믿을 가치가 없다. 하지만 예수님의 말씀은 믿어야 한다. 주님의 말씀은 믿는 사람에게 유익하다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 영원히 신뢰해야 한다. 주님의 말씀은 우리를 진실하게 하고 하나님께로 인도한다.
예수님은 제자들에게 진실을 말한다. 제자들은 주 예수를 구주로 믿는 사람들이다. 그들은 주님과 동행했다. 그들은 주님이 하신 모든 사역을 보았다. 제자들은 예수님이 치유사역을 보았다. 그들은 주님이 중풍병자, 나병환자, 맹인, 말 못하고, 못 듣고, 못 걷는 사람을 치유하는 것을 보았다. 그들은 예수님이 죽은 나사로를 살리는 것을 보았다. 그들은 주님이 물 위를 걷는 것을 보았다. 그들은 주님이 바람과 파도를 잔잔하게 하는 것을 보았다. 그들은 예수님이 물로 포도주를 만들고 5개의 빵과 물고기 2마리로 오천명을 먹이는 보았다. 그래서 제자들은 예수님이 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿었다. 제자들은 주님의 말씀을 직접 들었다. 그들은 주님으로부터 천국복음의 가르침을 받았다.
이것은 무엇을 의미하는가? 예수님은 “나를 믿는 자는 내가 하는 일을 그도 할 것이요 그보다 큰 일도 하리니”라고 말한다. 예수님은 자기를 믿는 사람이 갖게 될 능력을 말하고 있다. 주님을 믿는 사람은 주님이 하신 일을 한다. 믿는 사람은 주님의 능력을 부여 받는다. 그것은 주님이 주시는 능력이다. 주님은 믿는 제자들에게 자기의 능력을 주신다. 그래서 주님은 제자들이 주님의 일과 사역을 하게 한다. 주를 믿는 제자들에게 주어진 능력은 주님의 능력이다. 그것은 자신들에게서 난 것이 아니다.
모세는 지팡이를 홍해 바다를 향해 들었다. 홍해바다는 그 순간 갈라졌다. 이스라엘 사람들은 갈라진 바다 가운데로 걸어갔다. 모세는 지팡이로 반석을 두 번 쳤다. 물이 반석에서 시냇물처럼 흘러나왔다. 모세의 능력은 하나님이 주신 것이다. 삼손은 나귀의 새 턱뼈로 천명을 죽였다. 그의 능력은 하나님에게서 왔다. 엘리야는 하늘에서 불이 내려 오게 해서 제물을 태우게 했다. 그의 능력도 하나님이 주신 것이다. 엘리사는 죽은 아이를 살렸다. 그의 능력은 전능하신 하나님이 주신 능력이다.
주님은 믿는 자에게 능력을 주신다. 주님은 주의 제자들이 주님의 일을 할 수 있도록 능력을 주신다. 그래서 제자들이 하나님 나라의 사역을 하게 하신다. 주님은 자신이 하신 일을 믿는 자들도 하게 하신다. 주님은 지혜와 지식의 말씀, 치유 그리고 능력 행하는 은사를 주신다(고전 12:9-10). 주님의 제자들은 주님이 전하신 말씀을 전했다. 그들은 주님과 같이 말씀 사역을 했다. 베드로는 못 걷는 사람을 걷게 했다. 그는 죽은 다비다를 살렸다. 바울은 걷지 못하는 사람을 걷게 했다. 그것은 본 사람들은 신이 하늘에서 내려 왔다고 했다. 주님을 믿는 제자들은 주님이 하신 일을 했다. 초대교회 일곱집사 중에 스데반과 빌립은 주님이 하신 능력을 행했다. 주님을 믿는 사람들은 하나님 나라의 사역을 위해서 주님과 같은 일을 행한다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 우리는 주를 믿는 제자들로서 주님이 하신 일을 할 수 있다. 주님이 우리에게 능력을 주시기 때문이다. 우리는 주님처럼 하나님 나라의 복음을 전하고 능력을 행할 수 있다. 그것은 주님이 주시는 능력에 의해서다.
주님은 모든 사역을 마치시고 하나님 아버지께로 가신다. 주님은 성령을 믿는 자에게 부어 주신다. 믿는 자는 주님이 주시는 성령의 권능으로 주님이 하시는 일을 한다. 우리는 성령을 통해서 권능을 받고 주님의 증인이 된다(행 1:8). 우리는 주님의 증인으로서 주님이 하신 일을 하는 것이다. 이것이 믿는 자가 갖는 능력이다.
The Power of Believers (John 14:12)
At Jordan, Elijah struck the water with his outer garment. Then the Jordan river split and revealed dry ground. Elijah and Elisha crossed the Jordan. Did such power originate from Elijah? Where did his power come from? The power came from God. Who will give power to us who believe? What kind of power will believers receive? Today’s passage tells us this.
Jesus says. “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father” (v.12). Jesus is Christ the Lord, the Son of God. There is no deceit in him. He is eternally faithful. There is no deceit nor hypocrisy in our Lord. Jesus is the truth. The Lord of truth is truthful. All his words are truthful. Jesus, who is the truth, emphasizes that his words are truth. His words are true words that we must believe. The world is full of falsehood. There is deceit and falsehood in worldly people. So there is no value in believing in the world. However, we must believe the words of Jesus. The words of Jesus are beneficial to those who believe. We must trust in the word of the Lord forever. The words of Jesus make us truthful and lead us to God.
Jesus tells his disciples the truth. The disciples saw Jesus’ ministry of healing. They saw Jesus healing the paralyzed, the leprous, the blind, the mute, the deaf, and the lame. They saw Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. They saw Jesus walking on water. They saw Jesus quieting the storm and the waves. They saw Jesus making wine out of water and feeding the five thousand with just five bread and two fish. So the disciples believed that Jesus was Christ the Son of God. The disciples heard from Jesus directly. They received the teaching about the gospel of the kingdom of heaven from the Lord.
What does this mean? Jesus says, “Those who believe in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these.” Jesus is talking about the power that those who believe in him will receive. Those who believe in the Lord will do the works he did. Believers receive the power of the Lord. That is the power that the Lord gives. He gives the disciples who believe in him his power. And he enables them to do his works and ministry. The power that is given to the disciples who believe in him is the power of the Lord. Such power does not originate from them.
Moses stretched out his staff over the Red Sea. The Red Sea divided and the Israelites walked through the path created in the Red Sea. Moses hit the rock with his staff twice and water gushed out of it like a river. Moses’ power was given by God. Samson killed a thousand with the jaw bone of a donkey. His power came from God. Elijah made fire come down from heaven and burn the sacrifice. This power was also given by God. Elisha raised a dead child. His power was given by the Almighty God.
The Lord gives power to those who believe. The Lord gives his disciples power to do the works of the Lord. And thus he makes his disciples do the ministry of the Kingdom of God. The Lord makes believers do the works of the Lord. The Lord gives them the gift of wisdom, word of knowledge, healing and power (1 Corinthians 12:9-10). The disciples of the Lord spread the word given by the Lord. They did the ministry of the word as the Lord did. Peter made a lame walk. He raised Tabitha from death. Paul also made the lame walk. Many who witnessed it thought that God came down from heaven. Those who believed in the Lord did what the Lord did. Among the seven deacons of the First Church, Stephen and Philip performed miracles of the Lord. Those who believe in the Lord also do the works of the Lord for God’s kingdom and ministry. This applies to us too. As disciples who believe in the Lord, we can do what the Lord did. This is because the Lord gives us power. We can spread the gospel of the kingdom of God like the Lord and perform miracles. This is done by the power given by the Lord.
Jesus returned to the Father after completing his ministry. The Lord pours the Holy Spirit on those who believe. Believers do the work assigned by the Lord by the power of the Holy Spirit. We receive power by the Holy Spirit and become witnesses of the Lord (Acts 1:8). We do the work of the Lord as witnesses of the Lord. This is the power given to those who believe.
