히스기야 왕이 하나님 앞에 기도했다. 왜냐하면 앗수르 군대가 침략했기 때문이다. 하나님은 그의 기도를 들으시고 응답했다. 하나님은 천사를 보내셔서 앗수르 군대 18만 5천명을 죽였다. 그래서 하나님은 히스기야와 그의 나라를 구원해 주셨다. 오늘 성경은 기도응답에 대한 교훈을 주고 있다.
주 예수 그리스도를 구주로 믿는 사람은 기도한다. 그는 구원받은 성도요 하나님의 자녀이며 그리스도인이다. 그래서 그리스도인은 사랑의 아버지 하나님께 기도한다. 사랑의 하나님은 아들도 아끼지 않고 우리를 위해 세상에 보내셨다. 하나님은 십자가와 부활의 주님의 피로 우리 죄를 깨끗하게 하시고 부활의 권능으로 사망의 권세에서 우리를 해방했다. 또한 하나님은 우리를 자녀 삼으시고 사랑하신다. 우리는 그 하나님 아버지께 기도한다.
기도는 누구의 이름으로 하는가? 기도는 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 한다. 기도는 우리를 위해 죽으시고 살아나신 주 예수의 이름으로 한다. 주님의 이름은 구원의 권능이 있다. 우리는 구원자 예수의 이름으로 기도한다. 그것은 주 예수 그리스도 외에는 구원자가 없기 때문이다. 예수님은 우리가 주님의 이름으로 무엇을 구하든지 행하신다(13). 이것은 응답에 대한 보장이다. 기도는 응답을 전제로 한다. 만일 우리가 기도해도 응답이 없다면 아무도 기도하지 않을 것이다. 우리는 응답을 바라면서 기도한다. 주님은 무엇을 구하든지 응답해 주신다고 약속했다.
우리는 먼저 주님의 나라와 의를 위해 기도해야 한다. 우리는 나의 삶이나 세상에 속한 일을 먼저 구해서는 안된다. 우리는 주님의 나라의 시민으로서, 하나님의 자녀로서, 구원받은 그리스도인로서 주님에 속한 일을 먼저 구한다. 우리는 먼저 믿음의 일을 구해야 한다. 우리는 믿음의 성장과 견고함을 위해 기도해야 한다. 그러면 주님은 반드시 응답하신다. 우리는 순종의 삶을 위해 기도해야 한다. 우리는 주의 말씀대로 행하기 위해서 기도해야 한다. 우리는 하나님의 뜻대로 살기 위해 기도해야 한다. 우리는 복음 전도를 위해 기도하고, 헌신과 섬김을 위해서 기도해야 한다. 우리는 사랑을 실천하기 위해 기도해야 한다. 우리는 형제와 이웃을 사랑할 수 있도록 도움을 구해야 한다. 우리는 선을 행할 수 있는 능력을 구해야 한다. 우리는 인내, 겸손, 온유, 자비, 신실, 절제의 삶을 위해 기도해야 한다. 우리는 섬김의 삶을 위해 기도해야 한다. 우리는 성령의 열매를 맺기 위해서 기도해야 한다. 주님은 이러한 기도는 응답해 주 신다. 우리는 응답 받기 위해서 믿음의 일을 가지고 간절히 기도해야 한다.
또한 우리는 삶의 문제를 위해서 기도해야 한다. 우리는 건강을 위해 기도해야 한다. 몸이 아프고 고통이 있을 때에 기도해야 한다. 우리는 병과 장애를 극복하기 위해서 기도해야 한다. 주님은 수많은 병자를 치유하셨다. 우리가 주님께 건강을 위해서 기도하면 주님은 들으실 것이다. 우리는 재정적인 문제를 위해서 기도해야 한다. 우리는 궁핍하거나 생활에 어려움이 있을 때에 주님께 기도해야 한다. 우리는 자녀 문제를 위해서 기도해야 한다. 우리는 자녀의 학업과 장래를 위해서 기도해야 한다. 우리는 직장 문제를 위해서 기도해야 한다. 우리는 취직과 직장생활을 위해서 기도해야 한다. 우리가 주님께 이러한 문제로 기도할 때에 주님은 응답해 주실 것이다. 왜냐하면 주님께서 응답을 약속했기 때문이다(13).
주님은 우리의 기도를 외면하지 않으신다. 자기 아들도 아끼지 않으시고 우리를 위해 내어 주신 사랑의 하나님 아버지는 응답해 주실 것이다. 우리를 위해서 자기 목숨까지 버리신 주님은 우리의 기도를 들으신다. 주님은 우리의 기도를 들어 주시고, 응답해 주시고, 구원해 주시고, 도와 주시고, 해결해 주실 것이다. 우리를 위하시고 사랑하시는 주님은 전능하시다. 주님은 구원의 권능이 있다. 주님은 도울 수 있는 능력과 진실함이 있다. 사랑과 선하신 주님은 약속대로 응답해 주실 것이다.
주님께서 우리의 기도를 응답해 주시는 이유는 무엇인가? 예수님은 말씀한다. “아버지로 하여금 아들로 말미암아 영광을 받으시게 하려 함이라”(13). 주님께서 우리의 기도에 응답하시는 이유는 하나님 아버지의 영광이다. 예수님은 오직 아버지의 영광을 위해 사셨다. 주님은 자기 영광을 구하지 않으셨다. 주님은 우리의 기도에 응답하신다. 그래서 주님은 하나님 아버지께서 영광을 받으시게 한다. 베드로 사도가 감옥에 있을 때에 온 교회가 주님의 이름으로 간절히 기도했다. 하나님은 천사를 보내셔서 베드로를 감옥에서 구해 주셨다. 그래서 하나님은 영광을 받으셨다. 우리는 기도에 응답하시는 하나님께 영광을 돌려야 한다. 그것이 기도에 응답하시는 주님의 뜻이기 때문이다.
Answer to Prayer (John 14:13-14)
King Hezekiah prayed before God. The Assyrian army had invaded the country. And God answered his prayer. God sent angels and killed 18,500 Assyrian soldiers. And thus God delivered Hezekiah and his nation. Today’s passage teaches us about getting an answer to prayer.
Those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior pray. They are believers who have been saved, the children of God, and Christians. So Christians pray to the Father of love. The God of love sent his son for us unsparingly. God cleansed our sin through the blood of the Lord of the cross and resurrection, and liberated us from the power of death through the power of the resurrection. And God has made us his children and loves us. And we pray to God the Father.
By whose name do we pray? We pray by the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Prayer is done in the name of the Lord Jesus, who died for us and was raised from the dead. In the name of Jesus is the power of salvation. We pray in the name of Jesus the Savior. This is because there is no other savior besides Jesus Christ. Jesus does whatever we ask in the name of the Lord (v.13). It is the assurance about God’s answer. We pray to receive an answer. If there is no answer to prayers, then no one would pray. We pray expecting an answer. Jesus promised us that he will answer whatever we ask.
We must first pray for the kingdom of the Lord and his righteousness. We ought not to ask for anything about our life or of this world first. As citizens of the kingdom of the Lord, God’s children, and Christians who have been saved, we must first seek things of the Lord. We must first pray regarding our faith. We should pray for growth and stability in the faith. Then the Lord will surely answer your prayer. We must also pray about obedience. We should pray that we be able to live by the word of the Lord. We must pray that we live according to God’s will. We should pray for evangelism of the gospel, devotion, and service. We must pray that we can love. We should ask for help in loving our brothers, sisters, and neighbors. We should ask for strength to do good. We should pray for perseverance, humility, gentleness, compassion, faithfulness, and self-control. We ought to pray for the life of service. We must pray to bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The Lord listens to such prayers and answers them. To receive an answer, we should earnestly pray regarding matters of faith.
We should also pray about our problems. We should pray about our health. If we are ill or are in pain, we should pray. We should pray to overcome sickness and disability. Jesus healed so many people with sicknesses. When we pray to the Lord about our health, he will surely listen to us. We should also pray about financial problems. When we are impoverished or have financial difficulties, we should pray to the Lord. We should pray for our children, their studies and future. We should pray about our work and employment. When we pray to God regarding these problems, the Lord will answer us. For the Lord promised that he will do whatever we ask (v.13).
The Lord does not shun our prayers. The God and Father of love, who has given us his Son unsparingly, will answer us. The Lord who gave up his life for us listens to our prayers. Our Lord will listen to and answer our prayers, deliver us, and resolve our problems. The Lord who is for us and loves us is almighty. He has the power to save. He has the power and truth to help. The Lord who is love and good will answer us according to his promise.
What is the reason that the Lord answers our prayers? Jesus says, “…so that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (v.13). The reason Jesus answers our prayers is for the glory of the Father God. Jesus lived only for the glory of the Father. He did not seek his own glory. The Lord answers our prayers. In such a way, the Lord glorifies God the Father. When Apostle Peter was in prison, the entire church prayed in the name of the Lord. God sent an angel to save Peter. Thus, God was glorified. We must glorify God who answers our prayers. That is the will of the Lord who answers our prayers.
