사무엘 선지자가 이스라엘의 회개를 촉구했다. 그들은 우상을 숭배했기 때문이다. 이스라엘 백성은 우상을 버리고 하나님만 섬겼다. 하나님은 이스라엘을 블레셋 사람들에게서 구원하셨다. 이스라엘은 하나님의 계명을 지켰다. 하나님은 그들을 사랑하셔서 지켜 주셨다. 우리가 주님을 사랑하는 길은 무엇인가? 본문 성경은 주님을 사랑하는 사람은 어떤 사람인지를 알려 준다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “너희가 나를 사랑하면 나의 계명을 지키리라”(15). 우리는 주님의 말씀에 귀를 기울여야 한다. ‘너희’는 주 예수 그리스도를 구주로 믿고 구원받은 사람이다. 사람이 주를 믿지 않고 주의 계명을 지킬 수 없기 때문이다. 예수를 하나님의 아들 그리스도 구주로 믿고 성령으로 거듭난 사람이 주님의 계명을 지킨다. 주를 믿지 않는 사람은 주의 계명을 지킬 능력이 없다. 주를 믿는 사람이 마음으로부터 주를 섬기고 순종한다. 구원 받은 성도가 주의 말씀을 읽고, 배우며, 실천한다. 주님은 믿음으로 구원 받은 주의 제자들에게 이 말씀을 하고 있다.
그렇다면 우리가 주님을 사랑하는 길은 무엇인가? 우리는 일반적으로 상식적으로 주일 성수, 예배 참석, 많은 기도, 찬양, 헌금, 봉사를 주를 사랑하는 것으로 생각한다. 물론 이러한 것도 주님을 사랑하는 방법이다. 하지만 우리는 알아야 한다. 우리는 주님이 가르쳐 주시는 방법을 배워야 한다. 주님은 우리가 주의 계명을 지킬 때에 주를 사랑하는 사람으로 여긴다. 주님은 우리의 순종을 원하신다. 순종은 예수님의 삶이다. 예수님은 모든 믿는 자의 본이 되신다. 주님은 하나님 아버지의 계명을 죽기까지 순종하셨다(빌 2:8). 주님의 삶은 순종의 삶이다. 주님의 삶은 말씀의 삶이다. 주님은 성경대로 사셨다(고전 15:3-4). 우리는 주님의 삶을 본받아야 한다. 우리는 주님이 가신 길을 가야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 계명에 순종해야 한다. 우리는 성경대로 살아야 한다. 우리는 말씀을 실천해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 교훈을 그대로 지켜야 한다.
예수님이 순종하지 않았다면 우리의 속죄와 구원은 없다. 우리는 죄 가운데서 죽고 멸망한다. 주님이 성경대로 살지 않았다면 하나님의 뜻은 이루어지지 않는다. 예수님이 하나님의 계명을 지키지 않고 기적, 이적, 표적과 많은 능력을 행하시며 오래 사셨다면 하나님 아버지의 영광은 나타나지 않았을 것이다. 예수님이 순종 없이 예배와 찬양과 기도와 봉사로 사역을 끝냈다면 우리의 구원과 영생은 없었을 것이다. 순종을 통해서 주님의 뜻이 성취된다. 순종은 주님을 기쁘시게 하고 영화롭게 한다. 불순종은 주님을 욕되게 하고 분노케 한다. 불순종은 주님을 멸시하고 반역하는 행위다.
아담은 불순종했다. 그는 죄를 짓고 죽었다. 사울왕은 불순종으로 왕권을 박탈당했다. 그래서 사무엘 선지자는 “순종이 제사보다 낫다”고 말했다. 하나님은 말씀을 순종하기를 원하신다. 하나님은 순종이 없이 예배와 찬양과 헌금과 기도를 드리는 것을 기뻐하지 않는다. 순종의 삶에 하나님이 기뻐하시는 참된 예배가 있다. 불순종은 하나님 앞에 죄가 된다. 하나님의 진노는 불순종의 사람에게 임한다. 하나님은 계명을 순종하지 않은 이스라엘을 심판했다.
우리는 주님의 음성을 마음에 깊이 새겨야 한다. 우리가 주님을 사랑하는 사람이 되려면 주의 계명을 지켜야 한다. 우리가 주님의 계명을 잘 지키면 우리는 주님을 참으로 사랑하게 된다. 주님은 말씀한다. “나의 계명을 지키는 자라야 나를 사랑하는 자다”(21). 이 말씀은 우리가 주님의 계명을 지키는 것이 주님을 사랑하는 길이라는 것이다. 우리가 주의 계명을 지키지 않으면 우리는 주님을 사랑하지 않는 사람이다(24). 우리가 주의 계명을 지키지 않고 ‘주님을 사랑합니다. 주님을 찬양합니다. 주님을 기뻐합니다. 주님께 영광 돌립니다’라고 말하는 것은 잘 못된 고백이다. 주님을 사랑하는 길은 계명을 지키는 데 있기 것이다. 우리는 계명을 지키면서 ‘주님 사랑합니다’라고 말해야 한다.
우리가 주의 계명을 지켜서 주님을 사랑하는 사람이 되면 보상이 주어진다. 우리는 하나님 아버지의 사랑을 받게 된다. 학교에서 선생님의 사랑을 받고 회사에서 사장의 사랑을 받는 것은 귀하고 좋은 일이다. 우리가 하나님 아버지와 주님의 사랑을 받는 것은 엄청난 은혜요 복이다. 우리가 주의 계명을 지키면 하나님 아버지와 주님은 우리를 사랑하신다. 또한 주님은 순종하는 사람에게 자기를 알게 하신다. 주님의 진리는 순종을 통해서 참되고 확실하게 알 수 있기 때문이다. 우리가 하나님 아버지와 주님의 사랑을 받고 주님을 알게 되는 지름길은 주의 계명을 지키는 것이다. 우리는 주님의 계명을 지켜서 주님을 사랑하는 사람으로 살자.
Those Who Love Jesus (John 14:15, 21)
Prophet Samuel urged the Israelites to repent. The Israelites were engaging in idolatry. Then the Israelites turned from idol worship and served only God. And God delivered the Israelites from the Philistines. The Israelites obeyed God. And because God loved them, he protected them. What is the way to love the Lord? Today’s passage talks about what kind of people are those who love the Lord.
Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commands” (v.15). We must pay attention to the word of the Lord. “You” refers to those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Savior and are saved. For a person cannot keep the Lord’s commands without believing in him. Those who believe in Jesus as Christ the Savior, the Son of God and have been born again by the Holy Spirit keep the Lord’s commands. But those who do not believe have no ability to keep the commands. Those who believe in the Lord serve and obey the Lord from their heart. Those who have been saved read, learn, and practice the word of the Lord. The Lord is saying these words to his disciples who have been saved through faith.
Then what is the way to love the Lord? We may generally and conceptually think that attending service every week, many prayers, praises, offerings, and services are loving the Lord. Of course these are also ways to love the Lord. However, we must know that we must learn the ways of the Lord. To the Lord, we love him when we keep his commands. The Lord wants our obedience. Obedience is Jesus’ life. Jesus is an example to all believers. Our Lord obeyed the Father’s commands to the point of death (Philippians 2:8). The life of the Lord is the life of obedience. The life of the Lord is the life of the Word. The Lord lived according to the Scripture (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). We must follow the example of the life of Jesus. We must walk the way of the Lord. We must obey the Lord’s commands. We must live according to the Scripture. We must obey the word of God. And we must keep the Lord’s teachings.
If Jesus had not obeyed, there would not have been salvation or forgiveness for us. We would have died in our sin and perished. If Jesus had not lived according to the Bible, God’s will would not have been fulfilled. If Jesus performed miracles, wonders, and signs and lived long without keeping God’s commands, the glory of the Father would not have been displayed. If Jesus’ ministry ended with him worshipping, giving praises, and praying without obedience, there would not have been salvation and eternal life. The Lord’s will is fulfilled through obedience. Obedience pleases and glorifies the Lord. Disobedience, on the other hand, dishonors and enrages the Lord. Disobedience is an act of scorning and rebelling against the Lord.
Adam disobeyed. He sinned and died. King Saul was deprived of kingship because of his disobedience. So Prophet Samuel told him, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” God wants us to obey his word. God is not pleased with worship, praises, offerings, and prayers without obedience. True worship that pleases God is in the life of obedience. Disobedience becomes sin before God. God’s wrath comes on the disobedient. God punished Israel, who disobeyed.
We must engrave the words of the Lord in our hearts. To become lovers of the Lord, we must obey his commands. When we obey his commands well, then the Lord will truly love us. Jesus says, “Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me” (v.21). This means that the way to love the Lord is keeping his commands. If we do not obey his commands, then we do not love him (v.24). Without obedience, saying “I love you Lord. I praise you. I rejoice in you. I glorify you.” is not an appropriate confession.
When we obey the Lord’s commands and become those who love the Lord, then we will be rewarded. We will receive God the Father’s love. Receiving love from the teacher at school and from the manager at work is a precious and good thing. Receiving the love of God the Father and our Lord Jesus is an immense grace and blessing. When we keep the Lord’s commands, the Father and our Lord Jesus will love us. And Jesus will make himself known to those who obey. For the Lord’s truth can be clearly and truly known through obedience. The shortcut to receiving the Father’s and Jesus’ love and to know the Lord Jesus is by obeying his commands. Let us obey the Lord’s commands, living as those who truly love him.
