다윗이 어디로 가든지 하나님이 함께 하셨다. 또한 그는 무엇을 하든지 지혜롭게 행했다. 그 이유는 무엇일까? 그것은 바로 성령이다. 지혜의 영인 성령이 다윗과 항상 함께 했다. 그래서 다윗은 성령의 사람, 지혜의 사람이 되었다. 하나님은 주 예수를 구주로 믿는 자에게 성령을 주신다. 성령은 어떤 영인가. 오늘 성경 본문에서 예수님은 성령에 대해서 말씀한다.
하나님 아들 예수 그리스도는 성령으로 잉태되어 이 땅에 오셨다. 예수님은 성령으로 사시고 성령으로 사역하셨다. 하나님 아버지는 성령으로 예수님과 함께 하셨다. 하나님은 믿는 자에게 성령을 주신다(갈 3:2,5). 주님은 말씀한다. “내가 아버지께 구하겠으니 그가 또 다른 보혜사를 너희에게 주사 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하리니”(16). 하나님의 아들 주 예수님은 아버지 하나님께 간구한다. 하나님 아버지는 아들 주 예수 그리스도의 간구를 들으시고 보혜사를 우리에게 보내 주신다. 보혜사는 성령을 가리킨다(26). 보혜사 성령은 우리를 인도하시고, 위로하시고, 도우시고, 상담해 주신다.
주님은 주 예수를 믿는 자에게 성령을 주신다. 그래서 주님은 우리가 성령으로 거듭나게 하신다. 하나님은 거듭난 우리에게 영생을 주신다. 죄와 허물로 죽은 우리가 영원히 살게 하는 것은 성령의 역사다. 주님은 성령으로 거듭난 사람이 하나님 나라에 들어갈 수 있다고 말씀하셨다(요 3:5). 성령으로 거듭났다는 것은 죄와 사망의 권세에서 해방되었다는 의미다. 거듭남은 주님의 십자가의 속죄와 부활의 권능이 임했다는 것을 확증한다. 우리가 속죄의 은총을 얻고 죽음의 권세에서 벗어나기 위해서는 성령으로 거듭나야 한다. 주님은 우리가 영생을 얻게 하려고 성령으로 거듭나게 한다. 거듭나지 않았다는 것은 영적으로 죽었다는 의미다. 영적으로 죽었다는 것은 죄와 죽음의 권세 아래 있다는 증거다. 죄와 사망의 법에서 해방되지 못했다는 것은 성령으로 거듭나지 못했다는 증거다.
주님은 보혜사 성령을 우리에게 주시려고 아버지 하나님께 간구한다. 하나님 아버지는 주님의 간구를 들으시고 우리에게 성령을 부어 주신다(16). 주님은 자기의 모든 사역을 이루시고 부활 승천하신다. 주님은 우리를 홀로 두지 않는다. 주님은 하나님 아버지에게서 나오는 성령을 우리에게 주신다. 성령은 영원히 우리와 함께 하신다(16). 성령은 영원히 계시는 하나님의 영이다. 성령은 언제든지, 어디서나 항상 우리와 함께 한다. 성령은 우리를 떠나시지 않는다. 성령은 우리가 이 세상에 있든지 죽은 후에든지 영원히 우리와 함께 한다. 성령은 시간을 초월하여 우리와 함께 한다. 그래서 주님은 주의 영인 성령으로 우리와 함께 하신다. 우리와 함께 하는 성령은 우리가 성부 성자와 함께 천국에서 영생복락을 누리게 한다.
성령은 어떤 영인가. 예수님은 보혜사 성령을 진리의 영으로 표현한다(17). 성경은 성령을 다양하게 묘사한다. 성경은 성령을 하나님의 영, 그리스도의 영, 주의 영, 예수의 영, 선한 영, 양자의 영 등으로 표현한다. 성령은 하나님으로부터 나와서 믿는 자에게 주어 진다. 성령은 우리가 주를 믿고 고백하게 한다. 성령은 주의 말씀을 순종하게 한다. 그래서 성령을 순종의 영이라고 한다. 성령이 사람의 마음에 임하면 하나님 말씀을 순종하게 된다. 성령은 진리의 영이다. 진리의 말씀을 우리 마음에 가져 오고 생각나게 하는 분은 성령이다. 성령은 우리를 진리의 말씀으로 인도한다. 성령은 우리가 주의 말씀을 기뻐하고, 사랑하고, 귀히 여기고, 좋아 하게 한다. 성령은 주의 말씀을 묵상하고 생각하며 살게 한다. 성령은 진리의 말씀을 읽고, 배우며, 기억나게 한다. 그래서 성령은 우리가 진리의 말씀으로 살게 한다. 우리가 성경과 주의 말씀으로 사는 것은 성령의 역사다. 우리는 성령으로 진리의 말씀을 배우고, 깨닫고, 순종해야 한다. 거기에 우리가 성령의 사람이라는 증거가 있다.
성령은 믿음으로 받는다. 주를 믿지 않는 사람은 성령을 받지 못한다. 불순종과 불신앙 가운데 있는 세상은 성령을 받을 수 없다. 주님 말씀대로 세상은 성령을 보지도 못하고 알지도 못한다(17). 하지만 주 예수를 구주로 믿는 사람들은 성령을 안다. 왜냐하면 그들은 성령으로 살고 성령으로 행하기 때문이다. 성령은 우리와 함께 하신다. 성령은 우리 안에 거하신다. 성령은 우리의 마음과 생각을 다스리고 인도한다. 성령은 우리가 주님과 진리의 말씀을 생각하고 묵상하며 순종하게 한다. 우리는 우리 안에 거하시는 진리의 성령을 따라서 살자. 우리는 성령으로 진리를 순종하며 살자. 거기에 주님을 본받고 증거하는 참 된 믿음이 있기 때문이다.
Spirit of Truth (John 14:16-17)
Wherever David went, God was with him. Whatever he did, he did it wisely. How so? He did it by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, the spirit of truth, was always with David. So David became a man of the Holy Spirit, a man of wisdom. God gives his spirit to those who believe in the Lord Jesus as their Savior. What kind of spirit is the Holy Spirit? In today’s passage, Jesus teaches us about the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to the world born by the Holy Spirit. Jesus lived by the Holy Spirit and ministered by the Holy Spirit. God the Father was with Jesus by the Holy Spirit. God gives his spirit to those who believe in him (Galatians 3:2,5). The Lord says, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever” (v16). Lord Jesus, the Son of God, asks God the Father. God the Father listens to his son, Lord Jesus Christ, and sends us the advocate. The advocate refers to the Holy Spirit (v26). The Holy Spirit guides, comforts, helps and counsels us.
The Lord gives his Holy Spirit to those who believe in the Lord Jesus. The Lord makes us reborn by the Holy Spirit. God gives eternal life to us who are reborn. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to make us who were dead from our sin live eternally. The Lord says that only those who are reborn by the Holy Spirit can enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:5). To be reborn by the Holy Spirit means we are freed from the power of sin and death. Rebirth confirms that we have been given the power of the Lord’s cross, forgiveness and resurrection. We need to be reborn by the Holy Spirit to receive the grace of forgiveness and to be freed from sin and death. The Lord makes us reborn by the Holy Spirit so we can receive eternal life. If one is not reborn, that means they are spiritually dead. Spiritually dead means one is under the power of sin and death. When one is not freed from the law of sin and death, it means they are not reborn by the Holy Spirit.
The Lord prays to God to grant us the Holy Spirit. And God listens to him and pours out the Holy Spirit on us (v.16). Our Lord Jesus fulfilled all his ministry, and resurrected and ascended to heaven. Jesus does not leave us alone. He gives us the Holy Spirit, which comes from the Father. The Holy Spirit will be with us always (v.16). The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God who lives eternally. The Holy Spirit is with us whenever and wherever we are. The Spirit never leaves us. The Holy Spirit is with us eternally, whether we are in this world or after we die. The Spirit transcends time and dwells with us. The Lord dwells with us by the Holy Spirit, which is the spirit of the Lord. The Holy Spirit who is with us enables us to enjoy eternal life and blessings in heaven with the Father and the Son.
What kind of spirit is the Holy Spirit? Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of truth (v.17). The Bible describes the Holy Spirit in various ways. The Bible describes the Spirit as the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of Jesus, the Spirit of goodness, and the Spirit of adoption. The Spirit comes from God and is given to those who believe. The Holy Spirit enables us to believe in and confess the Lord. The Spirit enables us to obey the word of the Lord. Thus, the Holy Spirit is the spirit of obedience. When the Holy Spirit comes into our hearts, we will obey the word of God. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth. The one who brings the word of truth to our hearts and makes us remember it is the Holy Spirit. The Spirit guides us into the word of truth. It makes us enjoy, love, cherish, and like the word of the Lord. The Holy Spirit makes us meditate on and live by the word of the Lord. Living by the word of the Lord and the Bible are the work of the Holy Spirit. We must learn, understand, and obey the word of truth by the Holy Spirit. This serves as a testimony that we are the people of the Holy Spirit.
We receive the Holy Spirit through faith. Those who do not believe in the Lord do not receive the Holy Spirit. The world, which is amid disobedience and unbelief, cannot receive the Holy Spirit. Just as the Lord says, the world cannot see or know the Holy Spirit (v.17). However, those who believe in the Lord Jesus as their Savior know the Holy Spirit. For they live by and walk with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit lives with us. The Spirit lives in us. The Spirit reigns and guides our thoughts and minds. It enables us to think about, meditate on, and obey the Lord and the word of truth. Let us live by the Spirit of truth, who lives in us. Let us obey the truth by the Holy Spirit. For in such a life is true faith that follows and testifies to the Lord.
