엄마가 특별한 사정으로 아이를 보육원에 맡긴다. 엄마는 곧 와서 아이를 데려가겠다고 약속한다. 하지만 엄마는 그 후에 오지 않는다. 그래서 그 아이는 고아가 된다. 그는 부모의 보호 아래서 자라지 못한다. 오늘 본문 성경은 주님께서 제자들을 고아처럼 버려 두지 않겠다고 말한다(18).
예수님은 하나님 아버지의 보냄을 받아서 이 세상에 오셨다. 이 세상에 오신 예수님은 하나님의 아들 그리스도요 선한 목자이시다. 선한 목자 예수님은 양을 위해 목숨까지 버리셨다. 주님은 하나님의 말씀을 순종하셔서 십자가에서 돌아 가셨다. 주님은 죄인 된 나를 위해 죽으셨다. 주님은 나를 사랑하셔서 목숨까지 내어 주셨다. 주님은 영 죽을 나를 영원히 살리셨다. 주님은 우리를 죄와 사망의 권세에서 해방하시고, 천국 시민이 되게 하시고, 하나님의 자녀가 되게 했다. 주님은 이처럼 우리를 자기 목숨처럼 사랑했다. 주님은 우리를 고아처럼 버리시지 않는다.
고아는 부모가 없는 아이를 가리킨다. 고아는 부모가 아닌 타인의 손에서 돌봄과 양육을 받는다. 고아는 부모의 사랑을 받지 못하고 자란다. 하지만 주 예수를 구주로 믿는 우리는 고아가 아니다. 주님의 제자들은 하나님의 사랑하는 자녀들이다. 자녀는 부모에게 소중한 존재다. 부모는 자녀를 자기 목숨같이 여긴다. 부모는 자녀를 지극한 정성으로 양육한다. 자녀는 부모의 혈육이기 때문이다. 주님은 하나님의 자녀인 우리를 자기 자신처럼 사랑한다. 주님은 우리를 귀히 여기시고, 돌보시고, 양육한다. 주님은 우리를 자기 피로 사셨기 때문이다. 주님은 우리를 고아처럼 버리는 일이 없다. 주님은 우리를 눈동자 같이 지키시고 영원히 함께 한다. 우리는 주님의 사랑의 품 안에서 영원히 산다.
예수님은 제자들을 잠시 떠나신다. 하지만 주님은 곧 그들에게로 오신다. 주님은 하나님 말씀을 순종하셔서 십자가에 달려 돌아 가신다. 주님은 삼일만에 죽음의 권세를 이기고 부활한다. 부활하신 주님은 제자들에게 오신다. 그래서 주님의 제자들은 부활하신 주님을 만난다. 주님의 제자들은 부활의 주님의 증인들이다. 그들의 증거를 들은 사람들은 주를 믿고, 구원받고, 주님의 제자가 된다. 주님은 하나님의 자녀요 제자들인 우리와 보혜사 성령으로 함께 하신다. 주님은 우리를 고아처럼 버리는 법이 없다. 우리는 아버지 없는 고아가 결코 아니다. 우리는 아들까지 아끼지 않고 내어 주시고 자기 자녀 삼으신 하나님의 끝 없는 사랑 안에서 산다. 우리는 나를 위해 죽으시고 사랑하신 주님의 크고 놀라우신 사랑 안에서 산다.
예수님은 말한다. “조금 있으면 세상은 다시 나를 보지 못할 것이로되 너희는 나를 보리니 이는 내가 살아 있고 너희도 살아 있겠음이라”(19). 조금 있으면은 짧은 시간을 말한다. 주님은 성경대로 십자가에 달려 돌아 가신다. 하지만 주님은 조금 후, 3일만에 다시 살아 나신다. 그래서 조금 있으면은 주님의 부활을 의미하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 부활하신 주님은 자신을 제자들에게 보이셨다. 주님은 주를 믿고 순종하는 자에게 보이신 것이다. 주님은 무덤에서 사망의 권세를 이기고 부활했다. 부활하신 주님은 영원히 살아 계신다. 부활의 주님을 믿는 제자들도 영원히 산다. 우리는 믿음으로 영생을 얻는다. 그래서 우리는 살아 계신 주님을 영원히 볼 수 있다.
제자들은 부활하신 주님의 증인들이 되었다. 그들은 부활하신 주님을 직접 목격한 사람들이기 때문이다. 우리는 부활의 증인들의 증거를 믿는다. 그래서 우리도 부활의 주님을 증거한다. 우리는 부활의 증인으로서 산다. 우리는 부활의 주님을 증거하는 사명을 다해야 한다. 하지만 세상은 부활의 주님을 보지 못한다. 왜냐하면 주님은 그들에게는 나타나지 않았기 때문이다. 세상은 부활의 증인들이 될 수 없다. 그들은 십자가와 부활의 주님을 믿지 않고 보지도 못했기 때문이다. 세상은 주님을 미워하고, 대적하고, 박해한다. 그들은 부활의 주님을 영원히 볼 수 없다.
제자들은 부활하신 주님을 보게 된다. 그 때에 제자들은 주님이 하나님 아버지 안에 계심을 안다(20). 하나님 아버지는 주님 안에, 주님은 아버지 안에 계신다. 주님은 아버지와 나는 하나라고 하셨다(요 10:30). 주님은 그 때에는 주님의 제자들이 주님 안에, 주님이 제자들 안에 있는 것을 알게 된다고 말한다(20). 부활의 주님은 우리 안에 거하신다. 주님은 우리와 함께 하신다. 주님은 주님의 영과 말씀으로 우리 안에 거하신다. 우리 또한 주님 안에 있다는 사실을 믿는다. 우리는 주님의 몸인 교회의 지체들로서 주님과 하나다. 우리는 영으로 주님과 하나되는 삶을 산다. 우리를 주님 안에서 살게 하시는 은총에 감사하며 살자.
Those Who are in the Lord (John 14:18-20)
A mother brought her child to an orphanage. She promised the child to come back for him. However, the mother did not return. So the child became an orphan. The child was no longer raised under the care of his parents. In today’s passage, Jesus tells his disciples that he would never leave them as orphans (v.18).
Jesus was sent from the Father and came to the world. Jesus who came to the world is Christ the Son of God and the good shepherd. Jesus the Good Shepherd gave up his life for the sheep. He died on the cross in obedience to the word of God. He died for us sinners. Jesus gave up his life because he loved us. He made us live eternally, those who were destined to die eternally. Jesus liberated us from the power of sin and death, made us citizens of heaven, and enabled us to become his children. In this way Jesus loved us as his own. He will not abandon us like orphans.
An orphan is a child without parents. They are raised under the care not of parents but of others. They are raised without receiving the love of their parents. However, we who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior are not orphans. The disciples of Jesus are the beloved children of God. Children are very precious to parents. To parents, children are like their own life. Parents raise their children with all their heart. This is because children are their own flesh and blood. Jesus loves us, the children of God, as himself. He cherishes, cares for, and raises us. It is because the Lord bought us with his blood. He will never leave us as orphans. He will watch over us like the apple of his eye and be with us eternally. We will live eternally with the Lord in his embrace of love.
Jesus leaves the disciples but only for a little while. He comes back to them after a little while. He is crucified in obedience to the word of God. And in three days, he overcomes the power of death and is raised to life. Jesus who was raised to life returns to the disciples. And Jesus’ disciples meet him who was raised to life. And Jesus’ disciples are witnesses of the Lord of resurrection. Those who hear their testimonies believe in, are saved, and become the disciples of the Lord. Jesus is with us who are God’s children and disciples through the Holy Spirit. He will never leave us to become orphans. We are not orphans without a father. We live in the endless love of God, who has given us his Son unsparingly and made us His children. We live in the great and amazing love of our Lord, who died for and loved us.
Jesus says, “Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live” (v.19). “Before long” indicates a short amount of time. Jesus is crucified according to the Scriptures. However, after a little while, in three days, he is raised to life. Thus, we can see that “in a little while” indicates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. After Jesus was raised to life, he showed himself to the disciples. He showed himself to those who believed in him and obeyed him. Jesus overcame the power of death from the grave and resurrected. And Jesus, who was raised to life, lives eternally. The disciples who believe in the Jesus of Resurrection also live eternally. We receive eternal life through faith. Therefore, we can see the Lord who lives eternally.
The disciples became witnesses of the Lord of Resurrection. For they actually witnessed the Lord after his resurrection. We believe in the testimonies of the witnesses of the resurrection. Thus, we also testify to the Lord of Resurrection. We live as witnesses of resurrection. We must fulfill our calling to testify to the Lord of resurrection. But the world cannot see the Lord of Resurrection because Jesus did not show himself to them. The world cannot be witnesses of resurrection. They did not believe nor see the Lord of Cross and Resurrection. The world hates, opposes, and persecutes the Lord. They can never see the Lord who was raised to life.
The disciples saw the Lord after his resurrection. Then, they realized that Jesus is in the Father (v.20). God the Father is in Jesus, and Jesus in the Father. Jesus says that he and the Father are one (John 10:30). And he says that then, the disciples will know that they are in him and he in them (v.20). The Lord of Resurrection lives in us. He walks with us. He dwells in us through his Spirit and Word. We also believe that we are in the Lord. As members of the church, which is the body of Christ, we are one with him. We live as one with the Lord in spirit. Let us be thankful for the gift of living in the Lord.
