엘가나에게는 두 아내가 있었다. 그들 중에 하나가 한나다. 그런데 한나는 아이를 낳지 못했다. 하지만 엘가나는 아이를 낳는 아내보다 한나를 사랑했다. 하나님이 사랑하는 사람이 있다. 누군가의 사랑을 받는 것은 즐겁고 좋은 일이다. 특히 하나님의 사랑을 받는 것은 큰 은혜요 복이다. 본문 성경은 하나님의 사랑을 받는 길에 대해 말한다.
예수님에게는 12제자가 있었다. 그 중에 유다라는 이름을 가진 제자가 둘이다. 하나는 예수님을 팔아버린 가룟 유다 이고 또 하나는 다른 유다이다. 다른 유다가 예수님께 질문한다. “주여 어찌하여 자기를 우리에게는 나타내시고 세상에는 아니하려 하시나이까”(22). 유다의 생각은 세상에도 주님을 나타내면 좋지 않겠느냐는 것이다. 하지만 유다의 생각은 주님의 말씀을 잘 이해하지 못한 것이다(21).
예수님은 자기를 사랑하는 사람에게 나타낸다. 예수님을 사랑하는 사람은 예수님의 계명을 지켜야 한다. 그리고 예수님의 계명을 지키는 힘은 성령께 있다. 주님은 믿는 자에게 성령을 주셔서 주의 계명을 지키게 한다. 주를 믿지 않는 세상은 성령을 받지 못한다. 세상은 불순종의 영의 지배를 받는다. 그래서 세상은 주의 계명을 순종할 수 없다. 주님은 주의 계명을 성령으로 지키는 사람에게 자기를 알게 한다. 우리는 성령으로 계명을 순종하고 주를 배우고 알게 된다.
예수님은 유다의 질문에 대답하신다. 우리는 하나님의 아들 주 예수 그리스도의 말씀에 귀를 기우려여 한다. 주님은 사람이 주님을 사랑하면 주님의 말씀을 지킨다고 선언한다. 주님을 사랑하는 사람이 주의 말씀을 순종한다. 우리가 부모님을 공경하고 사랑하면 부모님의 말씀을 잘 듣는다. 우리가 주님을 사랑하면 주님의 말씀을 필연적으로 지킬 것이다. 중요한 것은 우리가 주님을 사랑해야 한다는 것이다. 우리는 주님의 크고 놀라운 사랑을 받았다. 주님은 우리를 위해서 자기 목숨까지 버리셨다. 우리는 주님의 십자가의 피의 속죄와 부활의 권능으로 영생을 얻었다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 사랑을 안다. 우리는 나를 사랑하신 주님을 사랑한다. 우리가 주님의 사랑에 보답하기 위해서다. 우리는 주님을 사랑하기 때문에 주님의 계명을 지킨다. 우리는 우리를 사랑하신 주의 말씀을 반드시 순종해야 된다는 사실을 안다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 지키지 않고는 주님을 사랑할 수 없다는 것을 알기 때문이다.
주님은 하나님 아버지의 계명을 지켰다(요 15:10). 그래서 하나님 아버지의 사랑 안에 거하신다. 하나님 아버지는 자기의 계명을 지키신 아들을 사랑한다. 아버지의 계명을 지키신 아들에게 하나님은 말씀했다. “이는 내 사랑하는 아들이요 내 기뻐하는 자라”(마 3:17). 우리가 주님의 사랑 안에 거하려면 아버지의 계명을 지킨 주님처럼 주님의 계명을 지켜야 한다. 결국 순종의 사람이 주님을 사랑하는 사람이다. 우리는 주님의 계명을 지켜야 한다. 그래서 나를 사랑하신 주님을 사랑해야 한다.
하나님은 아들 예수님의 계명을 지키는 사람을 사랑하신다(23). 예수님의 말씀은 곧 하나님의 말씀이기 때문이다. 우리는 내 말을 잘 들어 주는 사람을 좋아한다. 물론 우리는 내 자녀의 말을 잘 들어 주는 사람도 사랑한다. 우리는 나를 무시하고 내 말을 들어주지 않는 사람을 좋아하지 않는다. 하나님도 사랑하는 아들 예수님의 말씀을 잘 듣고 순종하는 사람을 사랑한다. 그래서 하나님은 믿고 순종하는 사람에게 영생을 주신다. 하나님은 하늘에 속한 신령한 복을 주시고, 천국을 유업으로 주신다. 하나님 아버지와 예수님은 주님을 사랑하는 사람과 함께 하신다(23). 성부와 성자는 주님의 말씀을 지키는 사람 안에 거하신다. 우리가 주님을 사랑하여 주의 말씀을 순종하면 성부와 성자는 영원히 내 안에 거한다. 그래서 성부와 성자는 나를 지키시고, 인도하시고, 도우시고, 구원하신다. 우리 안에 거하시는 주님은 우리를 가장 강하고, 지혜롭고, 복되게 한다. 하나님 아버지와 주님보다 강하고, 지혜롭고, 복된 존재는 없기 때문이다. 주님을 사랑하는 삶은 성부와 성자와 동행하는 삶이다.
주님은 자기를 사랑하지 않는 사람은 주님의 말을 지키지 않는다고 말한다(24). 우리는 주님의 말씀을 지키지 않고 주님을 사랑한다고 말할 수 없다. 주님을 사랑하는 길은 순종이다. 주님의 말씀은 곧 하나님 아버지의 말씀이다(24). 예수님은 자기의 말을 하지 않는다. 오직 예수님은 자기를 보내신 아버지의 말을 하신다. 주님은 아버지가 주시는 말을 그대로 전하신다(요 12:50). 그렇기 때문에 주님의 말을 순종하지 않는 사람은 곧 하나님의 말을 순종하지 않는 것이다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 순종하자. 그래서 우리는 하나님 아버지께서 사랑하는 사람이 되자.
Those Whom God Loves (John 14:22-24)
Elkanah had two wives. One of them was Hannah. Now, Hannah could not conceive. But Elkanah loved Hannah more than the wife who bore children. And there are people whom God loves. Receiving love from someone is a good and joyful thing. And receiving God’s love is especially a huge grace and blessing. Today’s passage talks about the way to receive God’s love.
Jesus had 12 disciples. Two of them were named Judas. One of them is Judas Iscariot, who betrayed and sold Jesus. The other Judas asks Jesus, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world” (v.22). His thought is that showing Jesus himself to the world is good. However, he asked the question without fully understanding the word of the Lord (v.21).
Jesus shows himself to those who love him. Those who love Jesus must keep his commands. And the power to keep Jesus’ commands is in the Holy Spirit. Jesus gives the Holy Spirit to those who believe in him, enabling them to keep his commands. The world, which does not believe in Jesus, cannot receive the Holy Spirit. The world is controlled by the spirit of disobedience. Therefore, the world cannot obey the Lord’s commands. The Lord makes himself known to those who keep his commands by the Holy Spirit. We are able to obey the commands, and learn and know the Lord through the Holy Spirit.
Jesus answers Judas. And we must pay careful attention to the word of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The Lord proclaims that if we love him, we will keep his word. Those who love Jesus obey him. If we honor and love our parents, we listen well to our parents. If we love our Lord Jesus, we will inevitably keep his commands. The important thing is that we must love our Lord. We received great and amazing love from the Lord. Jesus gave up his life for us. We received eternal life through forgiveness of sins by the blood of the Lord’s cross and the power of resurrection. Thus, we know the Lord’s love. We know the love of our Lord who loves us. And we should rightly respond to his love. We keep Jesus’ commands because we love him. We know that we ought to obey the word of the Lord who loves us. For we know that without obeying the Lord’s word, we cannot love him.
Jesus kept the Father’s commands (John 15:10). Therefore, he dwells in the Father’s love. The Father loves the Son who kept his commands. The Father said to the Son who kept his commands, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). To dwell in the Lord’s love, we must keep the commands of the Lord just as he kept the Father’s commands. In the end, the person of obedience is the person who loves Jesus. We must obey the Lord’s commands, and love the Lord who loves us.
God loves those who keep Jesus the Son’s commands (v.23). For the word of Jesus is the word of God. We like people who listen to us well. And we also love people who listen well to our children. We do not like people who ignore us and do not listen to us. Likewise, God loves those who listen and obey the word of Jesus the Son whom he loves. So God gives eternal life to those who believe and obey. God gives the spiritual blessings of heaven and the kingdom of God as an inheritance. The Father and the Lord Jesus are with those who love the Lord (v.23). God the Father and Jesus the Son dwell in those who keep the Lord’s commands. When we obey the Lord’s word because we love him, God the Father and Jesus the Son dwell in us forever. And they protect, guide, help, and save us. The Lord who lives in us makes us most strong, wise, and blessed. For there is no one stronger, wiser, or more blessed than God the Father and Jesus the Son. When we love the Lord, we walk with the Father and the Son.
Jesus says that those who do not love him do not keep his commands (v.24). Without keeping Jesus’ word, we cannot say that we love him. Obedience is the path to loving the Lord. The word of Jesus our Lord is the word of the Father (v.24). Jesus does not speak on his own. He only speaks the word of the Father. The Lord preaches the word exactly as given him by the Father (John 12:50). Therefore, those who do not obey Jesus’ word do not obey the word of the Father. Let us obey the Lord’s word and be those who are loved by God the Father.
