어떤 아버지가 아들에게 몹시 힘든 일을 시킨다. 아버지는 밭에 있는 큰 돌을 옮기라고 말한다. 자녀는 아버지의 말을 순종한다. 아들은 이성적으로, 논리적으로 옳지 않을지라도 순종한다. 아버지는 자녀의 순종을 보며 기뻐한다. 본문은 예수님의 순종을 말한다. 예수님의 순종이 주는 교훈은 무엇인가?
예수님은 하나님의 아들 그리스도다. 주님은 하나님 아버지의 보냄을 받아서 세상에 오셨다. 이 세상에 사람으로 오신 예수님은 아버지의 뜻대로 구주 사역을 이루시고 다시 세상을 떠나서 아버지께로 가신다(28). 예수님은 다른 사람들처럼 이 세상에서 죽을 때까지 살지 않았다. 주님은 자기의 사명을 성취하시고 다시 자기를 보내신 아버지께로 가신다. 아버지께로 가시는 주님은 다시 오신다(28). 우리는 이것을 재림이라고 이해한다. 우리는 다시 오시는 주님을 맞이할 준비를 하며 기다린다. 우리는 그리스도의 신부로서 신랑 예수를 기다리는 것이다. 제자들은 예수님이 갔다가 다시 오신다는 말을 주님으로부터 직접 들었다.
예수님은 말한다. “너희가 나를 사랑하였다면 내가 아버지께로 감을 기뻐하였으리라”(28). 예수님이 제자들을 떠난다는 것은 슬픈일이 될 수 있다. 어린 자녀를 두고 떠나는 엄마의 마음에는 근심과 슬픔이 있다. 하지만 엄마가 다시 돌아 온다는 것은 기쁜일이다. 제자들 역시 마찬가지다. 제자들에게는 주님이 떠난다는 사실은 슬프지만, 다시 오셔서 만나게 된다는 사실은 기쁜일이다.
예수님은 이미 여러번 말씀했다. 주님은 하나님 아버지의 보냄을 받았다. 그리고 예수님은 자기를 보내신 아버지께로 다시 가신다. 예수님은 자기를 보내신 아버지의 뜻을 이루셨다. 예수님은 아버지 말씀대로 사셨다. 예수님은 성경대로 우리 죄를 위하여 죽으시고 성경대로 3일만에 부활하셨다. 이것이 예수님이 자기를 보내신 아버지의 뜻을 성취하는 일이다. 예수님의 제자들은 이러한 주님의 사역을 믿고 이해했다. 주님의 제자들은 주를 믿고 사랑했다. 그들은 주님의 가르침을 순종했다. 그들은 주님의 십자가와 부활의 증인이 되었다. 그래서 그들은 예수님이 자기 사명을 완수하고 떠난다는 사실을 기뻐했다(29). 우리는 마땅히 해야할 사명을 이룰 때에 보람을 느끼고 기쁘다. 제자들은 에수님이 자기 사명을 다하시고 떠나지만, 다시 오신다는 사실을 기뻐했다. 우리 역시 마찬가지다. 우리는 주님이 십자가와 부활을 통해서 구원 사역을 성취했다는 사실이 기쁘다. 또한 우리는 주님이 다시 오신다는 사실을 기뻐한다.
예수님은 제자들에게 앞의 일을 미리 말했다. 예수님은 미래의 일을 아신다. 성자 하나님으로서 선지자로서 예언했다. 그리고 그일은 다 성취된다. 제자들은 주님의 말씀이 성취되었을 때에 주님을 믿게 된다. 우리 역시 주님의 말씀이 이루어졌을 때에 믿는다. 예수님은 우리가 믿게 하려고 미리 말씀했다. 우리는 주님과 성경의 모든 예언을 그대로 믿는다. 주님의 말씀은 믿는대로 다 이루어 진다.
예수님은 이후에는 제자들과 많은 말을 하지 않겠다고 말한다(30). 예수님은 이 세상 임금이 올 것이라고 말한다. 그는 예수님과 상관이 없다. 이 세상 임금은 마귀를 가리킨다(요 12:31). 마귀는 예수님의 십자가와 부활을 통해서 완전히 패배한다. 그는 설 자리를 잃고 쫓겨날 것이다.
예수님은 하나님의 아들이시다. 주님은 아버지를 사랑했다. 우리는 마땅히 우리의 부모를 사랑해야 한다. 그리고 우리가 부모를 사랑하는 증거는 공경과 순종이다. 순종하지 않는 자녀는 부모를 사랑한다고 볼 수 없다. 예수님은 자기를 보내신 아버지를 사랑했다. 그 증거는 무엇인가? 그것은 예수님의 순종이다. 예수님의 삶은 순종이다. 예수님은 아버지의 말씀대로 사셨다. 예수님은 성경대로 마리아에게 잉태되어 세상에 오셨다. 예수님은 성경대로 사시고 사역했다. 예수님은 아버지 하나님의 명령을 그대로 순종했다. 예수님은 십자가에서 죽기까지 순종했다. 우리는 예수님의 순종을 안다. 예수님의 순종은 곧 아버지를 사랑한 증거다.
우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 순종을 배워야 한다. 우리는 자기의 모든 것을 비우시고 아버지를 순종한 주님을 본받아야 한다. 우리는 예수님을 사랑해야 한다. 그 증거는 무엇인가? 그것은 주님의 계명을 지키는 것이다(15, 21, 23). 순종이 없는 사랑은 거짓이다. 참 사랑은 순종을 동반한다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 순종할 때에 주님을 사랑하는 것이다. 우리는 주님을 사랑하자. 그래서 우리는 주님의 계명을 순종하자.
Jesus’ Obedience (John 14:28-31)
A father gives his son a difficult task. He tells him to move a huge rock. The son listens to his father. Though the father’s ask may seem rationally and logically inappropriate, the son obeys. And the father rejoices at seeing his son’s obedience. Today’s passage talks about Jesus’ obedience. What is the lesson from the obedience of our Lord Jesus?
Jesus is Christ the Son of God. Jesus was sent by the Father and came to the world. Jesus who came to the world as human fulfilled the ministry as Savior according to the Father’s will and leaves the world to go to the Father (v.28). Jesus did not live in the world until he died naturally. He fulfilled his calling and returned to the Father who sent him. Jesus who is going back to the Father will return (v.28). We call this the Second Coming. We prepare to welcome the Lord who will return, and wait. We are waiting for Jesus the Husband as his wife. The disciples heard directly from Jesus that he will go back to the Father and will return.
Jesus says, “If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father” (v.28). That Jesus is going away may be a sad situation. A mother who is leaving her little kids will have worries and sadness. However, her return is an exciting thing. Likewise, for the disciples, Jesus’ departure is saddening but seeing him again brings joy.
Jesus already told them multiple times. He was sent by the Father. And he is returning to the Father who sent him. He fulfilled the will of the Father who sent him. He lived by the word of the Father. Jesus died for our sins and was raised to life in three days according to the Scripture. This was the work of fulfilling the will of the Father who sent him. The disciples of Jesus believed and understood the ministry of the Lord. They believed in and loved the Lord. They obeyed the Lord’s teachings. And they became the witnesses of the Lord’s cross and resurrection. They rejoiced that Jesus was leaving after completing his ministry (v.29). When we fulfill our calling, we feel rewarded and joyful. Though Jesus was leaving the disciples after completing his ministry, they were glad that Jesus was returning. Likewise, we are joyful that Jesus fulfilled the ministry of salvation through the crucifixion and resurrection. Moreover, we are glad to know that he is coming back. Jesus told his disciples before it happened. Jesus knows what will happen in the future. He prophesied as God the Son and the Prophet. And all things get fulfilled. When the word of the Lord gets fulfilled, the disciples believe in the Lord. We also believe when the word of the Lord is fulfilled in our lives. Jesus told us beforehand so that we may believe. We believe in the Lord, the Scripture, and all prophecies. The word of the Lord gets fulfilled according to our faith.
Jesus says that he will not say much more to the disciples (v.30). He says that the prince of the world is coming. He has no hold over the Lord. The prince of the world refers to the devil (John 12:31). The devil is completely defeated through Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. He will have no place to stand and will be banished.
Jesus is the Son of God. He loved the Father. We ought to love our parents. The proof of our love for our parents is honor and obedience. It cannot be said that disobedient children love their parents. Jesus loved the Father who sent him. What is the proof? It is Jesus’ obedience. Jesus’ life is obedience. He lived by the word of the Father. He was born by Mary and came to the world according to the Scripture. He lived and ministered according to the Scripture. He obeyed the Father’s commands. Jesus obeyed to death on the cross. We know Jesus’ obedience. His obedience is proof of his love for the Father.
We must remember that we must learn Jesus’ obedience. We must imitate Jesus who denied himself and obeyed the Father. We must love Jesus. How do we prove it? By keeping the Lord’s commands (v.15, 21, 23). Love without obedience is false. True love accompanies obedience. When we obey the word of the Lord, we love the Lord. Let us love our Lord and keep his commands.
