사과 농장에는 사과나무가 있다. 사과나무에는 사과가 열린다. 사과나무를 재배하는 농부가 있다. 농부의 목표는 많은 열매를 얻는 것이다. 교회는 열매 맺는 포도원이다. 농부는 포도원에 있는 가지의 열매를 원한다. 하나님은 우리가 열매를 맺기 원한다. 본문은 예수님은 참 포도나무라고 말한다. 열매 맺는 가지는 그리스도인이다. 우리는 예수님의 말씀을 통해서 우리의 본분이 무엇인지를 배울 수 있다.
예수님은 참 포도나무다(1). 이 말씀은 예수님의 비유다. 예수님은 비유로 가르침을 주셨다. 예수님은 씨를 뿌리는 자의 비유, 가라지 비유, 겨자씨 비유, 양과 염소 비유로 말씀했다. 주님은 비유를 통해서 천국의 진리를 전했다. 본문 말씀은 포도나무 비유다. 예수님은 포도나무를 통해서 천국의 진리를 가르쳐 주신다. 하나님은 구약에서 이스라엘을 포도나무라고 말씀했다(사 5장). 하나님은 가장 좋은 포도나무를 심었다. 하지만 이스라엘은 들포도를 맺었다. 하나님의 뜻과 의도와 다른 것이다. 그 이유는 그들이 하나님의 말씀을 순종하지 않았기 때문이다. 불순종은 죄를 낳는다. 그것은 하나님이 원하는 것이 아니다. 하나님은 순종을 원하셨다. 그래서 하나님은 이스라엘이 거룩하게 되고, 하나님을 기쁘시게 하고, 하나님을 영화롭게 하기를 원하셨다. 이스라엘의 불순종은 하나님을 욕되게 하고 분노케 했다. 그것이 들포도를 맺은 이유다.
예수님은 참 포도나무다. 야생 포도나무가 있다. 그것은 참 포도나무와 다르다. 그것은 인간이 먹기에 좋은 것이 아니다. 우리는 마켓에 나오는 포도를 먹는다. 그것이 참 포도다. 그것은 우리가 먹기에 좋고 유익한 과일이다. 예수님은 참 포도나무다. 포도나무를 재배하는 농부가 있다. 그 농부는 하나님이다. 즉 포도원 주인은 하나님인 것이다. 농부는 포도나무에 대한 소원이 있다. 그것은 많은 열매를 맺는 것이다. 어떤 농부도 적은 열매를 원치 않는다. 농부의 목표는 많은 열매다. 그래서 농부는 많은 열매를 맺게 하려고 최선을 다한다.
포도나무에는 가지가 있다. 가지는 무엇을 가리키는가? 포도나무의 가지는 주를 믿는 사람이다(5). 가지의 본분은 많은 열매를 맺는 것이다. 열매 맺지 않는 가지는 충실한 가지가 아니다. 열매 없는 가지는 무익하다. 예수님은 말한다. 포도나무이신 예수님께 붙어 있으면서 열매를 맺지 않는 가지는 농부이신 하나님 아버지께서 잘라 버린다. 그것을 그냥 두는 것은 무익하기 때문이다. 열매 맺지 못하는 가지는 농부의 뜻에 맞지 않는다. 그것은 농부의 소원을 만족시키지 못하고 기쁘게 하지 못한다. 그것은 결국 헛수고가 된다. 그것은 농부를 낙심케 하고 화나게 한다. 그래서 농부는 그 가지를 잘라 버린다.
이것은 매우 중요한 교훈을 준다. 우리가 열매 맺지 못하는 가지가 되면 잘린다는 사실이다. 우리의 본분은 열매를 맺는 것이다. 우리는 시간이 지나고 성장하면서 열매를 맺어야 한다. 우리는 열매 맺는 가지가 되어야 한다. 그 비결은 무엇인가? 열매 맺는 비결은 주님께 있다. 그것은 곧 순종이다. 믿는 우리가 주의 말씀을 순종하지 않으면 우리는 열매를 맺지 못한다. 예수님은 하나님 말씀을 순종하셨다. 그것이 곧 주님께서 열매를 맺은 비결이다. 이스라엘은 불순종으로 열매를 맺지 못했다. 그래서 하나님은 그들을 뽑아 버리시고 심판하셨다. 하지만 예수님은 순종하심으로 많은 열매를 맺었다. 예수님의 십자가의 순종은 속죄와 구원의 열매를 맺었다. 순종이 없는 열매는 없다. 우리는 열매 맺는 가지가 되어야 한다. 그것은 순종에 있다. 우리는 주의 말씀에 순종해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 열매 맺는 가지가 되어야 한다.
농부이신 하나님은 열매 맺는 가지는 더 많은 열매를 맺기 원하신다. 그래서 하나님은 그 가지를 돌보신다. 하나님은 열매 맺는 가지가 많은 열매를 맺게 하려고 깨끗하게 하신다. 가지는 깨끗할 수록 열매를 많이 맺는다. 결국 깨끗하지 못한 가지는 열매를 맺지 못한다. 우리가 깨끗하려면 주의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 순종은 마음과 생각과 삶을 깨끗하게 한다. 예수님은 진리의 말씀을 순종하셨다. 그래서 주님은 거룩하고 깨끗한 삶을 사셨다(요 17:19). 거룩한 삶은 열매를 맺는다. 우리는 많은 열매를 맺어야 한다. 그 비결은 거룩하게 되는 것이다. 우리는 거룩할 수록 열매를 많이 맺는다. 우리는 예수님처럼 진리를 순종해야 한다. 우리가 하나님 말씀인 진리를 순종할 때에 거룩하게 되고 많은 열매를 맺는다. 거룩함은 많은 열매 맺는 지름길임을 잊지 말자.
The True Vine (John 15:1-2)
There are apple trees in an orchard, and the trees bear fruit. There is a farmer who grows apple trees. His goal is to harvest a lot of fruit. Church is the vineyard that bears fruit. The farmer wants fruits to grow on the branches of the vineyard. God wants us to bear fruit. Today’s passage says Jesus is the true vine. The branches that bear fruit are Christians. We are able to learn our duty through the word of Jesus.
Jesus is the true vine (v.1). Jesus said this as a parable. Jesus taught the people using parables. Jesus taught in parables, such as the parable of the sower, of the weeds, the mustard seed, and of the sheep and goats. Jesus preached the truth of the kingdom of heaven through parables. Today’s passage is about the parable of the vine and the branches. Jesus teaches us the truth of the kingdom of heaven through the parable of the vine. God referred to Israel as the vine in the Old Testament (Isaiah 5). God planted the best vine. However, Israel bore wild grapes. It was contrary to God’s will and intention. And it was because they did not obey the word of God. Disobedience gives birth to sin. God was not pleased with it. God wanted obedience and for the Israelites to become holy, pleasing and glorifying God. Israel’s disobedience dishonored and enraged God. This was the reason they bore wild grapes.
Jesus is the true vine. There is a wild vine. It is different from the true vine. Wild grapes are not suitable for eating. We eat the grapes bought in markets. Such are the true grapes. They are good for eating and beneficial for us. Jesus is the true vine. And there is the Farmer that cultivates the vine. God is the Farmer. That is, God is the Lord of the vineyard. Farmers have expectations toward their vines. They want the vines to bear much fruit. No farmer wants a small quantity of fruit. The goal of farmers is to harvest a large amount of fruit. Therefore, farmers strive to make their vines bear a lot of fruit.
A vine has branches. What do the branches refer to? They refer to the believers of the Lord (v.5). The duty of branches is to bear much fruit. Those that don’t bear fruit are not faithful branches. Fruitless branches are useless. Jesus says that the branches that are connected to him yet don’t bear fruit, God will cut off. For it is useless to leave them. Fruitless branches do not align with the will of the farmer. They do not satisfy the farmer’s desire nor please him. To the farmer, his hard work became futile. This disheartens and enrages the farmer. And thus, the farmer cuts it off.
This gives us an important lesson. If we do not bear fruit, we will be cut off. Our duty is to bear fruit. As time passes and we grow, we should bear fruit. We ought to become branches that bear fruit. What is the key to achieving this? The key is in the Lord Jesus. It is obedience. When we who believe don’t obey the word of the Lord, we do not bear fruit. Jesus obeyed the word of God. This was the Lord’s secret to bearing fruit. Israel did not bear fruit because of disobedience. Therefore, God uprooted and punished them. However, Jesus bore much fruit through obedience. Jesus’ obedience of the cross bore the fruit of forgiveness and salvation. There is no fruit without obedience. We must become the branches that bear fruit, and this is achieved through obedience. We must obey the word of the Lord and become branches that bear fruit.
As the Farmer, God wants the branches that bear fruit to bear even more. So he looks after them. To make those branches bear more fruit, God prunes them. The more clean the branch, the more fruit they bear. Unclean branches end up not bearing fruit. To become clean, we must obey the word of the Lord. Obedience makes the heart, thoughts, and lives clean. Jesus obeyed the word of truth. And he lived a holy and blameless life (John 17:19). Holy living bears fruit. We must bear a lot of fruit. The secret to this is to become holy. The more holy we are, the more fruit we bear. We ought to obey the truth just like Jesus. When we obey the truth, which is the word of God, we become holy and bear much fruit. Let us never forget that holiness is the shortcut to bearing a lot of fruit.
