The Way to Bear Fruit (John 15:3-6)

There are trees that bear fruit and trees that do not. Branches of certain vines bear fruit while others do not. The Lord teaches us the way to bear fruit. What ought we to do to become a branch that bears fruit?

We can become clean by obeying the word of Jesus (v.3). We must obey the word of the Lord for our hearts, thoughts, and lives to be clean. The Father prunes the believers who bear fruit so that they bear even more fruit. We bear more fruit the cleaner we are. Ultimately, the way to bear abundant fruits is by obeying the word of the Lord.

Jesus says that we can bear much fruit when we remain in the Lord and the Lord in us (v.4-5). When we obey by faith, we become clean and remain in the Lord (v.3-4). When we remain in the Lord, the Lord remains in us. What is the way to remain in Jesus? By believing in Jesus as our Savior. Through believing in Jesus our sins are washed away by His blood. And we receive justification and salvation. We are liberated from death through the power of the resurrection of the Lord. Moreover, we receive the Holy Spirit through faith and are born again, receiving eternal life. When we receive life by escaping the power of sin and death, we can have fellowship with the Lord of Life. We are then able to get eternal life and become a member of Jesus’ body. And we worship, praise, give thanks, and pray to the Lord who is living.

A dead being cannot have fellowship with the Lord of Life. Those who have not been forgiven are spiritually dead. As a result, they do not remain in the Lord. Forgiveness is essential for us to remain in the Lord. And forgiveness is possible through faith. We must always live by faith, thereby living a righteous life. Moreover, we must obey the Lord to remain in Him. When we obey by faith, we do not sin but maintain purity. Then we will live a life that remains in the Lord.

Jesus says, “No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me” (v.4). A branch that is cut off from the vine cannot bear fruit. Likewise, those who have broken off from Jesus the Vine cannot bear fruit. For us to bear fruit, we must remain in the Lord Jesus. We must not become the branches that break off from the vine. To bear fruit, we must become the branches that are connected to the vine. And to be these branches, we must learn the word of God and obey it. For we are able to become clean through obedience. If we do not live by faith and are unclean, we cannot remain in Jesus. We instead become broken branches that cannot bear fruit. Only through obedience can we become clean through the holy word of God. Branches that are clean remain connected to the vine and bear fruits in accordance with God’s expectations.

Jesus is the vine and we are the branches (v.5). Jesus is the light of life (John 1:4). Darkness cannot have fellowship with the light. By faith we gain life and come to remain in the Lord, the Light of Life. Jesus is the righteousness and holiness of God. We become righteous through faith and remain in the Lord of righteousness and holiness through obedience to the holy word of the Lord. If we remain in the Lord, then He remains in us. Through a righteous and holy life we remain in the Lord and bear much fruit. Adam disobeyed and sinned. As a result, he could not bear fruit. However, Jesus obeyed and bore much fruit. We can bear fruit through the fellowship of life with the Lord through obedience in the faith. When we depart faith and disobey, we become unclean and end up as fruitless branches. But we have fellowship with the Lord of Life by obeying the word of the Lord. As a result, we become more like Jesus and bear fruit.

Jesus says, “If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned” (v.6). Jesus emphasizes that when we do not remain in the Lord, we become dry branches, and those branches will be gathered to be burned. The point of Jesus’ emphasis is that we must remain in him. For if we do not remain in him, we cannot become branches that bear fruit. Let us become branches that bear fruit. To this end, let us remain in the Lord. To remain in the Lord, let us live by faith and the word of God. And thus, let us bear much fruit by becoming clean through obedience to the word of the Lord. If we do not remain in the Lord but we remain outside of him, we cannot bear fruit. Let us not forget that the people of unbelief and disobedience cannot bear fruit.
