유다의 히스기야 왕 때에 앗수르 왕 산헤립이 쳐들어 왔다(사 36:1). 히스기야 왕이 하나님의 성전에 가서 앗수르 왕이 보낸 편지를 펴 놓고 간절히 기도했다. 하나님은 히스기야의 기도에 응답하셨다. 하나님의 천사가 앗수르 군대 18만 5천명을 죽였다. 그리고 앗수르 왕은 자기 아들들의 손에 죽었다. 히스기야 왕은 전쟁 없이 승리했다. 본문은 우리의 기도에 응답하신다는 주님의 교훈이다.
주님은 말씀한다. “너희가 내 안에 거하고 내 말이 너희 안에 거하면 무엇이든지 원하는 대로 구하라 그리하면 이루리라”(7). 사실 우리는 매일 기도한다. 왜냐하면 우리가 구해야 할 것이 많기 때문이다. 예수님은 우리가 구하는 대로 이루어지는 길을 제시한다. 그것은 무엇인가? 우리가 주님 안에 있어야 한다는 것이다. 우리가 주님 밖에 있으면 구하는 대로 이루어지지 않는다. 우리가 주님 안에 있을 때에 우리의 기도는 응답된다. 기도의 응답은 주님 안에서 이루어진다.
그렇다면 우리가 주님 안에 거하는 방법은 무엇인가? 그것은 믿음이다. 우리가 믿지 않으면 그리스도 밖에 거하게 된다. 우리가 주를 믿지 않으면 죄와 사망 가운데 거하게 된다. 죄로 죽은 사람은 생명의 주님과 교제할 수 없다. 우리가 죄와 사망에서 벗어나서 영생을 얻을 때에 주님과 교제할 수 있다. 그 길이 믿음이다. 우리는 믿음으로 죄를 사함받고, 의롭다함을 받고, 부활의 생명을 얻는다. 그래서 우리는 주를 섬기고, 경배하고, 찬양한다. 주 밖에는 생명이 없다. 우리는 믿음으로 주 안에 거한다. 믿음의 삶은 주님과 함께 하는 삶이다. 우리는 믿음으로 구원받고 교회인 주님의 몸의 지체가 된다. 우리는 믿음으로 포도나무이신 주님의 가지가 된다. 우리는 믿음으로 하나님의 자녀가 되고 형제 자매가 된다. 우리는 믿음으로 성령을 받고 거듭난다. 우리는 믿음으로 주님과 영원한 생명의 교제를 한다. 우리는 믿음으로 빛이신 주님 안에서 세상의 빛이 된다. 믿음은 주 안에 거하는 방법이다.
또한 우리가 주님 안에 거하는 길은 믿음의 순종이다. 주를 믿지 않고 순종하지 않으면 하나님의 생명에서 떠난다. 아담은 불순종으로 하나님과의 생명의 교제에서 떠났다. 이스라엘이 하나님 말씀을 불순종 하여 죄를 지을 때에 주의 백성에게서 끊어 진다. 우리가 믿음으로 주를 순종하면 주 안에 거한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀으로부터 생명의 음식과 능력을 공급받는다. 말씀의 순종은 주님을 영화롭게 하고 기쁘게 한다. 우리는 순종으로 주님과의 관계를 친밀하고 견고하게 한다. 우리는 순종으로 거룩하게 되고 생명의 풍성함을 얻는다. 그래서 예수님은 주님의 말씀이 우리 안에 있을 때에 응답하신다(7).
우리가 주님의 말씀을 순종하면 주님을 기쁘시게 하고 주님의 뜻대로 살게 된다. 그러면 주님은 우리가 구하는 것을 들으시고 우리를 기쁘게 한다. 우리가 소원을 이루는 길은 주의 말씀을 순종하는 것이다. 불순종은 죄가 되고, 주님을 분노케 하고, 기도의 응답을 방해한다. 하나님은 이스라엘이 불순종 했을 때에 그들의 기도를 응답하지 않았다. 우리가 구하는 것을 응답 받는 길은 믿음의 순종이다. 우리는 구하는 것이 많다. 우리는 믿음의 삶을 위해 기도한다. 우리는 가족, 건강, 미래, 공부, 직장생활, 교회, 국가를 위해 기도해야 한다. 우리는 구하는 대로 응답받기 원한다. 그 비결은 믿음으로 주의 말씀을 순종하는 것이다. 순종과 믿음의 삶은 응답의 지름길이다.
열매를 많이 맺는 것은 농부의 목표요 소원을 성취하는 것이다. 그것은 농부의 기쁨이요 행복이다. 우리가 열매를 많이 맺으면 하나님 아버지께서 영광을 받으신다. 왜냐하면 그것은 하나님 아버지의 원함이기 때문이다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지의 말씀대로 사셨다. 주님은 말씀을 순종하셨다. 그 결과 예수님은 십자가와 부활의 복음으로 온 세상에서 열매를 맺는다. 그리고 주님은 아버지 하나님을 영화롭게 했다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 믿음으로 순종하면, 주님의 뜻이 이루어 진다. 또한 우리는 구하는 대로 응답을 받는다. 우리가 주님 안에 거하면서 주의 말씀을 순종하여 응답을 받는 것은 열매다. 우리가 순종한 만큼 주를 기쁘시게 하고 기도의 응답을 받는다. 그 결과 많은 열매를 맺는다. 그것은 농부이신 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리는 길이다. 많은 수확을 거두면 농부가 영광을 얻는다. 우리가 많은 열매를 맺으면 하나님은 영광을 받으신다. 그리고 우리는 주님의 제자가 된다. 왜냐하면 우리가 주님의 말씀을 순종했기 때문이다. 우리는 믿음으로 순종하여 기도응답을 받고 많은 열매를 맺자. 그래서 우리는 하나님께 영광을 돌리고 주님의 제자된 삶을 살자. 기도응답의 길은 주님 안에서 믿음과 순종이다.
Answer to Prayer (John 15:7-8)
At the time of King Hezekiah of Judah, King Sannecherib of Assyria invaded the land (Isaiah 36:1). King Hezekiah went up to the temple of God, spread out the letter from the King of Assyria before God and prayed. And God answered his prayer. God sent an angel and killed 185,000 from the Assyrian army. And the King of Assyria died at the hands of his sons. But King Hezekiah gained victory without fighting. Today’s passage is the Lord’s teaching that God answers our prayers.
Jesus says, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (v.7). We pray daily because we have many requests to bring before God. Jesus tells us the way for our prayers to be answered. What is the way? We must remain in the Lord. If we do not remain in the Lord, our prayers do not come true. It is when we remain in Him that our prayers are answered. Answer to prayers is fulfilled in the Lord.
Then how do we remain in the Lord? By faith. If we do not believe, we remain outside of the Lord. If we do not believe, we remain in sin and death. Those who are dead in sin cannot have a fellowship with the Lord of Life. We can have fellowship with the Lord when we escape sin and death and get eternal life. The way to this is faith. We receive forgiveness of sins, righteousness, and the life of resurrection through faith. Therefore, we serve, worship, and praise the Lord. There is no life outside of the Lord. We dwell in the Lord by faith. The life of faith is the life in which we walk with the Lord. We are saved and become members of the church, the body of the Lord, through faith. We become the branches of the Lord, who is the vine, through faith. We become God’s children and brothers and sisters by faith. We receive the Holy Spirit and are born again through faith. Through faith we have a fellowship of eternal life with the Lord. Through faith we become the light of the world when we remain in the Lord of Light. Faith is the way to remain in the Lord.
Moreover, obedience by faith is the way to remain in the Lord. If we do not believe in or obey the Lord, God’s life leaves us. Adam, because of his disobedience, left the living fellowship with God. When an Israelite disobeyed the word of God and sinned, they were cut off from the people of God. When we obey the Lord through faith, we dwell in him. We are supplied with the food of life and power through the word of the Lord. Obedience to the Word glorifies and pleases God. Through obedience we have a close and firm relationship with the Lord. We are sanctified through obedience and gain an abundance of life. Thus, when the Lord’s word dwells in us, He answers us (v.7).
When we obey the word of the Lord, we please him and live according to his will. Then the Lord will answer our prayers and please us. We are able to fulfill our wishes by obeying the word of the Lord. Disobedience becomes sin, enrages the Lord, and prevents answer to prayers. When an Israelite disobeyed, God did not answer their prayers. The way to receive answers to our prayers is to obey by faith. We have many requests. We pray for our life of faith. We pray for our family, health, future, study, work, church, and the country. We desire for all our prayers to be answered. The key to this is to obey the word of the Lord by faith. The life of obedience and faith is the shortcut to receiving answers to prayers.
Bearing much fruit is the farmer’s goal and a fulfillment of his wish. It is the farmer’s joy and happiness. When we bear a lot of fruit, the Heavenly Father receives glory. For such is what the Father wants. Jesus lived according to the word of the Father. As a result, Jesus bears fruit throughout the world through the gospel of cross and resurrection. And Jesus glorified the Father. When we obey the word of the Lord by faith, the Lord’s will is fulfilled. And all our prayers will be answered. Fruit is answers to prayers through our obedience to the Word by remaining in the Lord. We please the Lord as much as we obey and also receive answers to our prayers. As a result, we bear much fruit. This is the way to glorify the Father, the Farmer. Harvesting much is to the glory of the farmer. When we bear a lot of fruit, God receives glory. And we become the Lord’s disciples, for we have obeyed the word of the Lord. Let us obey by faith, receive answers to our prayers, and bear much fruit. And thus, let us live as disciples of the Lord, glorifying God. The way to receive answers to prayers is faith and obedience in the Lord.
