Fullness of Joy (John 15:11-12)
There was a man who heard someone say something and got very mad. What they said hurt him. It triggered a flashback of his past trauma. Of many things we hear, there are words that give us joy and encouragement and those that hurt us. Today’s passage describes words that give us overflowing joy.
When people speak, they normally don’t do so meaninglessly. They have some intent. When we write a letter, we want to convey something and have a purpose for writing it. Whether it is delivering some news or asking if someone is well, the writer has an intent. When we write, we have a purpose. There is intent when we give a speech to a large audience, when teachers teach students, and when parents discipline their children.
Jesus tells us, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (v.11). Jesus has an intent when he speaks to us his beloved. Jesus loves us just as the Father loves him. Someone loving us, as opposed to hating us, isn’t an unpleasant thing. When we hear that someone doesn’t like us, then we feel bad. But when we hear that someone loves us, we feel happy. Jesus told us his words for our joy, to make our joy complete. Jesus wants us to rejoice when we hear that he loves us. It is truly an overwhelmingly great joy.
Receiving Jesus’ love gives us the greatest joy, as his love is the greatest love we can ever receive. Jesus kept the Father’s commands and received his love. When we also obey the Lord’s commands, we receive his love. We keep his commands to receive his love, for we know that keeping his commands is the way to receive his love. We should know the important meaning behind Jesus’ word. His word is for our joy (v.11). It is our great joy to know that Jesus loves us when we keep his commands. Jesus told us this so that our joy may overflow. His words give us joy. We listen to and learn the word of the Lord and gain great joy. Life full of joy is in listening to and obeying the word of the Lord. Let us love the word of the Lord, learn it, and obey it to receive fullness of joy.
When we keep Jesus’ commands, we remain in his love (v.10). Jesus’ love is given to those who keep his commands. Then what is the command we must keep? Jesus tells us the command in verse 12. The command of the Son of God, Christ the Savior that we must keep is this: to love one another just as Jesus loved us. This command was given to those who believe. This command was given for the believers of Christ and those who have been saved to obey. Those who do not believe and who have not been saved do not have the power to keep the command. Those who are spiritually dead have no power to obey the living word of God. Only those who have received the Holy Spirit by faith can keep Jesus’ living words. Only the people who have been born again through the Holy Spirit and received eternal life can keep it. Therefore, the Lord’s command that we must keep was given to us who have been saved by faith. Jesus’ word to love one another testifies to this. Jesus is telling the brothers and sisters in faith to love one another.
What is the reason we must love one another? It is because Jesus loved us. How did Jesus love us? He gave up his life for us (John 10:11, 15). Jesus died on the cross to wash away our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3; Philippians 2:8). If Jesus did not die for us, we would die in our sins. Jesus died to save us from sin and death. Jesus loved us to the point of death. Jesus was shunned by people. He suffered, was mocked, scorned, and persecuted. And he wants us to love just as he loved us (v.12). This is the command and longing of Jesus who loved us.
We must love the brothers and sisters who are believers just as Jesus loved us. This command was given to all of us. Just as the Lord forgave us, we must accept and forgive one another. We must bear with our brothers’ and sisters’ pain and distress. We must bear their burdens. We must give up and sacrifice ourselves for our brothers and sisters. Just as Jesus died for us sinners, we must be able to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters (1 John 3:16). We remain in the Lord’s love when we keep his commands and love one another. Let us love one another just as the Lord loved us.
