Jesus’ Friend (John 15:13-15)
When a child fell into the water, his father jumped in without hesitation. The father saved his kid, risking his life. It is because parents and children are blood-related and are a lifeline to each other. It is very rare to hear of cases where one died trying to save a friend. Friends are colleagues, socially connected, or in a temporary relationship. Today’s passage is about Jesus’ friend.
Jesus says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (v.13). The greatest love among people is the love in a parent-child relationship. When children feel hurt, parents share the feeling. There was a man whose mother had liver cancer. And he donated his liver to his mother. The mother was able to recover her health. However, it is rare to see someone giving their liver to their friend. They may just empathize and be with them. There are some people who pay their friend’s debt. There are others that go to jail on their friend’s behalf. But it is rare for someone to die for their friend.
Jesus says that there is no greater love than to lay down our life for our friend. People love their friends. Friends maintain close relationships and talk about deep things. People give help when their friends need company and need something. However, they tend to think that even close friends are just friends. People generally don’t think of laying down their lives for their friends. We generally don’t think of laying down our lives for anyone. For we think there is nothing more valuable than our life. We value our only life. If we ask what is the most valuable thing to them, most people will say it is their life. Laying down our only life for our friends is very difficult and almost impossible. So Jesus tells us that laying down our life for our friends is the greatest love.
Jesus says, “You are my friends if you do what I command” (v.14). Friends in this world are humans like us. There is a way to become a friend of Jesus Christ the Savior, the Son of God. It is by obeying his commands. Abraham became God’s friend (Isaiah 41:8; James 2:23). How did he become God’s friend? By faith and obedience. God befriended Abraham who obeyed by faith. In the same way, we can become God’s friend when we obey before him. We must obey his commands. We must live according to his commands. We must think, speak, and act according to the Lord’s teachings. Our hearts should always have the word of God. Then we will live as the Lord’s friend.
Jesus says, “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business” (v.15). Servants do the work of their master. They do whatever their master tells them to do. But they are not able to know their master’s mind, thoughts, and plans, because the master does not tell them all these. Jesus says, “I have called you friends, for everything that I learn from the Father I have made known to you” (v.15). Jesus’ disciples came to know the will, thoughts, and plans of Jesus the Son of God and God the Father.
We come to know when we hear the word of God the Father, that is, the word of Jesus that the disciples preached. The word of God that the disciples preached is recorded in the Bible. We come to know the word of the Father that Jesus spoke through hearing and reading the Bible. Through the words Jesus spoke, we know the thoughts, will, and plans of God the Father and Jesus. We enact the Lord’s will when we obey the word of the Lord. We come to know the mind and thoughts of the Lord by learning and obeying the word of the Father and of Jesus. And in this way we have fellowship with the Lord, and serve and worship him. We become Jesus’ friend. We are friends of Jesus for life and forever. Let us learn about the Lord and his word and obey. For friendship with Jesus requires truly knowing him. We are friends of Jesus. Let us walk with Jesus, who is our eternal friend.
