회사에서는 직원을 뽑는다. 그 이유는 회사의 일을 위해서다. 회사는 선택한 직원이 회사 일을 잘 해주기를 바란다. 회사는 그 직원을 통해서 발전하고 좋은 결과를 내기를 기대한다. 따라서 회사의 발전과 번영을 가져 오는 직원은 회사로부터 보상을 받는다. 예수님께서 사람들 가운데서 제자들을 선택했다. 주님이 제자들을 선택한 이유가 있다. 예수님은 그 이유를 본문에서 말한다.
예수님은 말한다. “너희가 나를 택한 것이 아니요 내가 너희를 택하여 세웠다”(16). 하나님은 아브라함을 선택했다. 하나님은 그를 믿음의 조상이요 이스라엘의 조상으로 세웠다. 하나님은 아브라함이 말씀을 순종하여 하나님의 뜻을 이루기를 원하셨다. 그래서 하나님은 아브라함의 믿음의 삶을 통하여 그 뜻을 이루셨다. 하나님은 모세를 선택했다. 하나님은 모세를 향한 뜻을 이루셨다. 모세는 하나님의 계획대로 이스라엘을 애굽에서 인도해 내었다. 하나님은 이새의 막내 아들, 목동 다윗을 선택했다. 하나님은 다윗을 통해서 자기의 뜻을 다 이루셨다.
예수님은 베드로와 함께 12제자를 선택했다. 예수님은 성도들과 주님을 박해한 바울을 선택했다. 또한 예수님은 나를 선택했다. 우리는 주님의 선택을 받았다. 그래서 우리는 지금 주를 믿고, 구원받고, 예배하며, 믿음으로 산다. 우리가 주님 앞에 나와서 주를 예배하고 섬기는 것은 주님의 선택을 받았기 때문이다. 선택에는 원리가 있다. 그것은 선택을 받는 자가 선택하는 것이 아니다. 선택하는 사람이 선택한다. 마켓에서 물건을 살 때에 사는 사람이 선택한다. 사는 사람이 자기가 원하는 것을 선택한다. 물건이 ‘나를 선택해 주세요’라고 할 수 없다. 선택권은 사람에게 있다.
예수님은 나를 선택했다. 내가 예수님을 선택한 것이 아니다. 예수님은 자기가 원하는 사람을 선택할 권리가 있다. 우리가 예수님을 선택할 수 없다. 선택 받는 사람에게 선택권이 있는 것이 아니다. 선택의 권한은 주 예수님께 있다. 세상에는 많은 사람이 있다. 하지만 모든 사람이 예수님을 믿는 것이 아니다. 예수님이 선택한 사람이 예수님을 구주로 믿는다. 예수님이 나를 선택해 주셨다. 그래서 내가 예수님을 구주로 믿는다. 내가 예수님을 구주로 믿고 구원 받은 것은 전적으로 예수님의 은혜의 선택에 의한 것이다. 예수님이 선택해 주지 않으면 선택을 받을 수 없다.
예수님이 나를 선택한 이유와 목적이 있다. 주님이 나를 선택한 이유는 열매 맺게 하려는 것이다. 우리를 선택하신 주님의 원함은 열매다. 곧 우리가 열매를 맺지 못하면 예수님이 선택하신 목적에서 벗어난다. 열매 없는 삶은 주님을 기쁘게 하지 못한다. 그것은 주님을 실망시키고 무익한 삶이 된다. 열매 맺지 못하는 것은 우리의 본분에서 이탈하는 것이다. 우리는 마땅히 열매를 맺어야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님을 기쁘게 해야 한다. 우리는 열매를 맺기 원하는 주님의 마음을 즐겁게 해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 마음에 만족함을 드려야 한다. 우리의 본분은 열매를 맺는 것이다.
우리가 열매를 맺는 길은 무엇인가? 열매를 맺는 길은 믿음으로 주님께 순종하는 것이다. 우리가 믿음으로 주님의 말씀을 순종하면 우리는 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 주님께 순종하여 성령으로 살면 성령의 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 순종하여 사랑으로 행하면 사랑의 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 거룩한 삶을 살면 거룩한 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 순종하여 의로운 삶을 살면 의의 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 선을 행하면 선한 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 주님께 순종하여 어려운 형제와 이웃을 돕고 섬기면 선한 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 진실하게 행하면 진실한 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 화평하게 살면 화평의 열매를 맺고, 자비를 베풀면 자비의 열매를 맺고, 신실하게 행하면 신실한 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 온유하게 행하면 온유의 열매를 맺고, 절제의 삶을 살면 절제의 열매를 맺는다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 순종할 때 열매를 맺는다. 우리는 항상 열매를 맺어야 한다. 우리는 항상 주님의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 그러면 우리는 열매를 항상 맺을 것이다.
예수님이 우리를 선택하신 또 다른 이유는 기도응답이다. 우리가 열매를 맺으면 주님은 우리의 기도에 응답하신다. 왜냐하면 열매는 주님 말씀에 순종할 때 맺기 때문이다. 하나님은 주를 순종하는 사람의 기도를 들으신다. 기도 응답은 열매로 나타난다. 우리는 기도가 응답될 때에 열매 맺는 삶을 살게 된다. 주님은 우리가 항상 열매를 맺고 기도응답을 받기를 원하신다. 우리가 예수님의 이름으로 기도하는 것마다 하나님 아버지께 응답을 받기 위해서 열매 맺는 삶을 살자. 우리는 기도응답은 열매 맺는 삶에서 나타난다는 사실을 기억하자. 우리는 나를 선택하신 주님의 뜻대로 열매를 맺고 기도응답을 받는 삶을 살자.
Reason for His Choosing (John 15:16)
Companies select and hire employees to work for them. And companies want employees to perform well. They expect to make progress and achieve good results through their employees. Thus, the employees that contribute significantly to the development and prosperity of the company are rewarded. Jesus chose disciples among people. There is a reason why he chose them. He says it in today’s passage.
Jesus says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you” (v.16). God chose Abraham. God chose him to become the father of faith and the father of Israel. God wanted Abraham to obey his commands and fulfill his will. And he fulfilled his will through Abraham’s life of faith. God also chose Moses. God fulfilled his will toward Moses. Moses brought the Israelites out of Egypt according to God’s plan. And God chose David a shepherd, the youngest son of Jesse. God fulfilled his will through David.
Jesus chose 12 disciples, including Peter. He chose Paul, who persecuted him, and the believers. And Jesus chose us. We were chosen by Jesus. Therefore, we believe in the Lord, worship him, and live by faith. We are able to come before the Lord and worship and serve him because we were chosen by him. There is a principle to choosing. This is not determined by the chosen. It is determined by the one who chooses. In markets, the buyer chooses what to buy. Products don’t say ‘Please choose me.’ The choice depends on the buyer.
Jesus has chosen us. We did not choose him. Jesus has the authority to choose those he wants. We cannot choose Jesus. The chosen do not have the right to choose. The right to choose belongs to the Lord Jesus. In this world there are many people. However, not all people believe in Jesus. Only the people chosen by Jesus believe in him as the Savior. Jesus has chosen us. Therefore, we believe that Jesus is our Savior. Believing in Jesus as our Savior and being saved are according to the choice of Jesus by grace. Without Jesus choosing us, we cannot choose Jesus.
Jesus has reason and purpose for choosing us. The reason Jesus chose us was so that we may bear fruit. The desire of Jesus who chose us is fruit. That is, if we do not bear fruit, we will deviate from the purpose for which Jesus chose us. Fruitless life displeases Jesus. It disappoints the Lord and becomes futile. Being fruitless is straying from our duty. We ought to bear fruit. And by doing so, we should please the Lord. We should please the Lord, who wants us to bear fruit. We should give satisfaction to the Lord’s heart. Our duty is to bear fruit.
What is the way to bear fruit? The way is to obey the Lord by faith. When we obey the word of the Lord by faith, we bear fruit. When we live by the Holy Spirit in obedience to the Lord, we bear the fruit of the Spirit. We bear fruit when we obey and live a righteous life. When we do good, we will bear the fruit of goodness. When we obey the Lord and help the brothers and sisters and neighbors in need, we will bear the fruit of goodness. When we are truthful, we will bear the fruit of truth. When we are at peace with others, we bear the fruit of peace. When we show compassion, we bear the fruit of compassion. When we are faithful, we bear the fruit of faithfulness. When we are gentle, we bear the fruit of gentleness. When we have self-control, we bear the fruit of self-control. When we obey the word of the Lord, we bear fruit. We must always bear fruit. We ought to always obey the word of the Lord. Then we will always bear fruit.
Another reason Jesus chose us is so our prayer may be answered. When we bear fruit, the Lord answers our prayers. For we bear fruit when we obey the Lord’s word. God listens to the prayer of those who are obedient. Answers to prayer are manifested through fruit. When our prayers are answered, we live a life that bears fruit. Jesus wants us to always bear fruit, and wants our prayers to be answered. Let us live a life of bearing fruit, so that we may receive answers to all our prayers that we pray to God the Father in the name of the Lord. Let us remember that answers to prayers are manifested in the life that bears fruit. Let us bear fruit according to the will of the Lord who chose us and receive answers to our prayers.
