Greatest in Heaven<\/strong> (Matthew 18:1-4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n A mother tells a kindergartener, \u201cYou have to become great. You have to become great when you grow up.\u201d It is the hope of most, if not all, parents that their children become great. No parent would ever say to their child, \u201cBecome the least.\u201d Similarly, Jesus wants us to be great in heaven. Who are the greatest people in the Kingdom of Heaven? Today\u2019s passage is Jesus\u2019s answer to the disciples\u2019 question of who is the greatest in heaven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus and his disciples have an unbreakable relationship. That is the relationship between a teacher and a disciple, the Savior and a believer, the King of heaven and the citizen of heaven. The disciples asked the Lord, the King of heaven, \u201cWho is the greatest in heaven?\u201d The disciples believed that they would enter heaven. So they were curious about who becomes great in heaven. Who is the greatest in the United States? People would answer, the president. Who is the greatest in school? People would answer, the principal. Who is the greatest in a company? People would answer, the CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus called a child and explained to the disciples who is the greatest in heaven (v2). Jesus teaches by using parables, explaining directly, demonstrating by action, or showing real life. Today\u2019s passage is Jesus teaching by showing real life. Jesus emphasizes that if we do not become like a little child, we will never be able to enter heaven (v3). There is one condition we must meet to enter heaven. That is to become like a little child. Before telling them who is the greatest in heaven, Jesus first explains what the requirement is to enter heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does it mean to become like a little child? Jesus is not referring to the physical state. Children are physically immature. Their body continues to grow until they become adults. Nor is Jesus referring to the mental state. Children are mentally immature. They don\u2019t have the ability to perform a duty as well as an adult. Nor is Jesus referring to intellectual ability. Children are intellectually immature. They don\u2019t have the ability to make appropriate and intellectual decisions like adults. Elementary school students won\u2019t understand college lectures. But we must remember that the requirement of entering heaven is to become like a little child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus explains what it means to become like a little child in verse 4. \u201cTherefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.\u201d The condition we must meet to enter heaven is to become like a little child. What does it mean to become like a little child?<\/p>\n\n\n\n We must consider the typical characteristics of a child. First of all, children are simple. They don\u2019t think too deeply or complicatedly. There was an eight year old girl who was begging her mother to buy her something she wanted. The mother denied her because she could not afford it. A stranger who witnessed the situation offered to buy the girl what she wanted. The girl followed the stranger without any suspicion. However, the stranger did not buy her what she wanted. Instead, he sexually abused the girl and murdered her. This unfortunate incident shows that children are too simple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Second, children are dependent. Due to their physical and psychological weaknesses, children tend to depend on others. They depend on their parents and other adults. Third, children are naive. Children are pure. Older people have more worldly experiences. Adults live with all kinds of worldly thoughts. Some adults deceive others, lie, or harbor malicious thoughts. Thus, we say that adults are impure. However, we say that children are pure like clean paper. Children tend not to ask too many questions. A pastor once visited a church member\u2019s home. The church member told her child to say, \u201cmother is not home.\u201d So the child told the pastor \u201cMy mom told me to tell you that she is not home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fourth, children are humble. Jesus talks about children\u2019s humility in today\u2019s passage. To become like a little child means to become humble. Humility is a characteristic of a child. Adults tend to be arrogant. They brag, have high self esteem, and consider themselves the best. Adults tend not to think about being low. Even though they pretend to be otherwise in speech, they are arrogant. They tend to belittle and disregard others. Most children on the other hand are not proud, stubborn, have high self-esteem or disregard others like adults. Children tend to be more accepting of their lowly state, receptive, and follow leaders well. When we tell the gospel to children and adults, children tend to be more receptive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is the model of humility. Jesus always humbled himself. Jesus even obeyed to death. Being humble like a little child is the mind of Jesus. Jesus\u2019s mind is the mind of the Holy Spirit. When we lower ourselves and imitate Jesus, we will become the greatest in heaven. Jesus tells us to be humble.
