God determines every relationship. The relationship between parents and children, in particular, is blood-related, inevitable, and destined. It\u2019s not based on human will or choice. Today\u2019s passage talks about the attitude, obligations, and ethics we should have in a parent-child relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verse 1 says that children should obey their parents. The duty and role of children is obedience. It is the children\u2019s duty to obey their parents. This is the same idea as obeying God the Father. Parents give birth to and raise a child. It is impossible for kids to survive without parents or guardians. So there are no children who are without parents or guardians. God made parents and gave them children. Children grow up in the shade of their parents\u2019 love and favor. Thus, God requires children to obey their parents. Disobedience is going against the commands of God. It is not doing one\u2019s duty as children. Regardless of age, children should obey their parents. Whether they are little kids, teenagers, or middle-aged, children should obey their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s passage says to obey <em>in the Lord<\/em>. This means to obey as believers in Christ. As the people of faith, we ought to be exemplary in obedience. We must obey as people who received God\u2019s grace of salvation. We must obey our parents as children of God. Children who obey God the Father will also obey their parents. Jesus obeyed God the Father. And he also obeyed his parents in this world (Luke 2:51). Abraham obeyed God. Isaac, Abraham\u2019s son, obeyed his father. He followed his father\u2019s example and obeyed even to being sacrificed as an offering. To obey in the Lord means to obey according to the word of God. For example, if parents tell you not to believe in Jesus, or go to church, or act in love, or be thankful, these go against God\u2019s commands and should not be obeyed. Obedience to the Lord should be our top priority. Jesus does not obey someone telling him not to be crucified because it goes against the will and word of God. We must remember\u2013we must obey everything that doesn\u2019t deviate from the word of God. Obeying parents is a right thing. It is a good thing before God. Parents consider their children to be good and right when they obey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verse 2 tells us to obey our father and mother. Children are born to this world through their father and mother. The parents love and care for their children all their lives. Parents&#8217; hearts never leave their children. Parents never forget their children to their death. Parents take care of a disabled child day and night. That is why the Bible tells us to respect our parents. Deep within their hearts, children must first remember their parents\u2019 grace and love and respect them for it. Children these days think that they grew up on their own. Thus, they mistreat their parents and do not respect them. This is not only disobedience to their parents but disobedience to the Lord.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, children have to obey the father as a father and the mother as a mother. This is because fathers and mothers each take care of their children according to their duty. We should not only obey one of the parents. Some children obey their father, but not the mother. This is wrong. Some children speak to their mother, but not the father. That makes the father feel left out, lonely and sad. Some of these parents even feel that they were abandoned by their children. This is the fault of their children. Children must obey their parents equally. Children must cherish their parents. They must not think lightly of their parents and mistreat them. Today\u2019s reality is unfortunate. Many children think of their parents as burdens. Many shun their parents from their mind. However, the scripture tells us, \u201cListen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old\u201d (Proverbs 23:22). Caring for one\u2019s parents is obedience to God. Jesus, even while on the cross, asked John to take care of his mother, Mary. We must not grieve our parents and make them concerned or painful. The scripture tells us to please our parents in everything we do (Colossian 3:20). Children must understand their parents, provide for their needs, serve them wholeheartedly, and help them the best they can. Children must not be indifferent to their parents who are struggling. Children must make their parents feel rewarded for nurturing them. They must not make their parents feel regretful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is compensation for obeying our parents. God promised compensation for those who obey their parents. That compensation is prosperity and longevity. We want our children to be prosperous. To make our children prosperous, we have to teach them to obey their parents. We also must obey our parents to be prosperous. Everyone wants to be healthy and live a long life. This is a reward given by God to those who obey their parents. We and our children have to obey our parents in order to be prosperous, successful and live a long life. According to God\u2019s command, we have to obey our parents as that is our duty.
