The wounded hand was in pain and bleeding. The mother quickly disinfected the wound and applied balm over it. Overtime, the wound healed. Similarly, our spirit and mind heals. There are times when we are heart-broken and in pain. Such a broken spirit must recover. Today\u2019s passage talks about the effects of speech. Speech has various effects. It can act as a knife or it can act as a balm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a speech that feels like stabbing that hurts the listener\u2019s feelings. There is a speech that is as sharp as a knife. It wounds the heart. What kind of speech is this? One example is when someone says something that we do not want to hear. There is a man who says harsh things to his wife when they get into an argument. \u201cWhy are you like that? You are just like in-laws. You are just like your parents.\u201d And he verbally attacked his in-laws. Many who get into these kinds of arguments leave lasting effects. We are also hurt when we hear something that makes us feel bad. There is a saying in Korea, \u201cgive a disease, then give a medicine.\u201d There are speeches that bruise the heart and make it ill. Those are slanderous and insulting speeches. Psalm 69:16 says, \u201cInsults have broken my heart.\u201d We feel bad when we hear insults.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A speech with contempt also hurts one\u2019s feelings. Speeches like \u201cYou are so stupid. You are so incompetent. Can\u2019t you do better?\u201d There was a boss of a Korean gang, Chijon Family, by the name of Gihwan Kim. He committed a murder and was executed. When he was an elementary school student, he was very poor. He could not afford to bring crayons to school. His teacher reproached him and said, \u201cWhy did you not bring crayons? Go steal them and bring them, if that\u2019s what it takes.\u201d Since then, he became a criminal. When one is reproached recklessly, it can ruin a person. There was a prison escapee named Changwon Shin. For almost two years, he lived as a prison escapee. Now, he is back in prison for life. He recalls his fifth grade teacher yelling at him, \u201cIf you are not at school with tuition fees, get out of here!\u201d He confessed that he was very hurt when he heard that. We must not speak recklessly. We must not speak based on mood, emotions, impulsively, or in anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are words that hurt someone badly, make them painful, and make them hard to bear. One elementary school teacher told a fourth grade student that they have zero potential to be successful in the future. The child was hurt and never forgot what the teacher said. However, he became very successful. The Scripture says, \u201cYou who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor\u201d (Psalm 52:2). This is the saying of King David. David went to the priest, Ahimelech, to escape from King Saul\u2019s plot to murder him. David asked for something to eat because he was hungry. The priest gave him some fresh bread. An Edomite named Doeg, a chief herdsman of King Saul, witnessed this and reported this to the king. King Saul was angry with Ahimelech and killed 85 priests. Doeg\u2019s words resulted in the death of God\u2019s priests. Psalm 57:4 says \u201cthe children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.\u201d Some speeches are like spears, arrows, and swords. They hurt a soul and cause harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s passage says, \u201cthe tongue of the wise brings healings.\u201d First, the tongue of the wise is the Word of God for God is a God of wisdom. God\u2019s words heal a broken heart and spirit. When our hearts are broken, we must seek the word of God. The Word of God will heal our wounds. The Bible is the medicine for the soul. Jesus\u2019s words are words of wisdom. Jesus is the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24,30; Colossians 2:3). The Lord\u2019s words have the power to heal and bring recovery. Isaiah 61:1 says that Jesus comforts the brokenhearted. The tongue of the wise is also the speech of the faithful. Sermons and words of believers can be encouragement and healing for a brokenhearted. Their words give strength, consolation and peace. There are words that heal a broken heart and spirit. Our broken souls must be healed and must recover so we can be healthy in spirit. When a broken soul is left unhealed, it gets worse. We must recover by the word and grace of our God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have to speak words that bring healing. We must speak words of faith. We must speak words that strengthen those who have weak faith. We have to tell others, \u201cLive by faith. Trust in God.\u201d We have to speak graceful words and have graceful influence. We must speak words of peace that make a soul peaceful. We have to say words that are beneficial for others. We must think twice, even three times, before we speak. We must say words of encouragement. We have to encourage and comfort one another with sayings like, \u201cI appreciate your service.\u201d We have to say words that respect and honor others. We have to avoid speeches that are condescending, condemning, and mocking. We have to speak positive words. We must speak words that edify others. We must speak words of kindness, love, generosity and meekness. We must speak with God\u2019s words. We must speak words that heal wounds like medicine.
