We want to live a rewarding, beneficial, and efficient life, and live without regret. For example, farmers hope to harvest a large quantity of crops. This gives satisfaction and joy to farmers. Likewise, we hope for a satisfying and joyful life. Now there is the most beneficial and effective life. Today\u2019s passage tells us this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verse 1 says that although we speak in the tongues of men or of angels, if we do not have love, we are like a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. Speaking in tongue is a gift of the Spirit that God gives. The believers in the early church spoke in tongues on Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came on them. 1 Corinthians 14 talks about praying and giving praises in tongues. Speaking in tongues is beneficial and valuable to the life of faith. However, it is not complete on its own. Speaking in tongues should be accompanied by their life of love. Speaking in tongues without love is not beneficial. There ought to be love that follows Jesus\u2019 example and testifies about him. A perfect life before God is not in speaking in tongues. It is in love which makes the gift complete.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in the tongues of angels is not perfect on its own. Angels are the servants of God and ministers. God works and speaks through the angels. God sent an angel to Mary, the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38). The angel told Mary the word of God. In another instance, an angel appeared before Cornelius the Centurion. Preaching and teaching the word of God like the angels is important. They are God\u2019s calling and gift. However, just speaking in words without action is meaningless. Jesus spoke and put the words into action. He taught us to be humble and he humbled himself to death. He told us to bear our cross and follow him, and he himself bore the cross. He taught us to love and he loved us. Paul told us to follow his example, and he followed the example of Jesus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministry of preaching is made perfect when the teachings and actions go together. Words without action are teachings without love. Words and sermons that are pleasing to listen to end up being just pleasant words if there is no action to accompany the teachings. Such life bears no fruits. Teachings just in words are without effect and can be hypocritical. Sermons that are pleasant to listen to but without action or truth look beautiful on the surface, but they are like a fruitless tree. Sermons should not just be words of angels. They should be accompanied by life that testifies to what they teach. Love is realized when we put God\u2019s word into practice. If Jesus just taught us in words but without putting them into action, love is not shown. Love is fulfilled in action (2 John 1:6).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verse 2 talks about the gift of prophecy and faith. The Scripture is prophetic. The writings of the prophets in the Old Testament are called prophetic books. Prophecy is a gift of God. With the ability to prophesy, the person with the gift is able to know the secrets and knowledge of God and the Bible. So they can possess an outstanding knowledge of the Scripture and faith. However, prophecy by itself is imperfect. They cannot reach the faith that God is pleased with if they have no love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faith is a gift. We could move mountains, walk on water, and perform miracles. However, if we do these without love, it means nothing. Jesus knew God\u2019s every secret and wisdom and performed miracles. But the Lord did not stop there. The Lord loved us. In obedience to the Word of God, Jesus surrendered his life for us. That is how Jesus delivered us from sin and death. Jesus always acted in love. A gift of faith without love is useless. Only the faith with love is complete. Love must accompany faith. Like the Lord, we must love our brothers and neighbors in obedience to the Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verse 3 refers to the act of giving and dedication. Giving generously is a special gift that the Lord gave us (Romans 12:8). Giving generously is a good and merciful act. It is a way of loving. Apostle Paul says that assisting and serving brothers and churches in need is an act of love (2 Corinthians 9:1). Giving is a fruitful life (Philippians 4:14-17). Nevertheless, giving without love is meaningless. We must do good and serve our brothers with love. We must not be proud or boast about our act of kindness. We must be kind with the mind of sympathy. We must not let our left hand know what our right hand is doing. We must do good secretly so that God will reward us. The motivation of a kind act is important. Many conduct kind acts to make their names great. We must avoid doing kind acts to promote ourselves by posting about it in public forums. We must not selectively show kindness that can be recognized. We must conduct our kind acts secretly before God. We must conduct kind acts that glorify God, not ourselves. Such kind acts are perfect and beneficial.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the life of faith and duty, we need the dedication of surrendering ourselves. A dedication without love is meaningless. Jesus dedicated his life. The Lord\u2019s dedication was the dedication of love. The Lord loved God the Father and dedicated his life in obedience to God. Jesus did not seek his own good, but endured the cross (Hebrews 12:2). Like Jesus, we have to love with dedication by obeying the Lord\u2019s commands. In the middle age, there was a priest known to have an extraordinary gift. He performed miracles. However, there was a bad rumor about him that the spirit he received was fake. So an abbot went to investigate him. The abbot visited the priest on the priest\u2019s birthday dressed up as a poor person. When the priest and his family saw the abbot in torn clothes, they were complaining about his appearance on the priest\u2019s birthday and kicked out the abbot. The abbot summoned other priests and told them, the rumor is true that the priest&#8217;s spirit is fake. A gift and ministry without love is not from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of the God of love. Thus, the Holy Spirit makes us live in love. We must live in obedience to the Word of God as Jesus did.
