class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a master-servant relationship. This exists in God(Jesus)-and-human relationship as well as human-and-human relationship. Long ago, there was a social class system. At the time, there was a master and a servant. The servant belonged to the master. The master considered the servant as a possession. The servant did not have a right of their own. A servant could not insist on their opinion, thought or right. The servant had to follow the will of the master. Their destiny was determined by their master. Today\u2019s passage talks about God\u2019s servants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In verse 22, Pauls says, \u201cnow you are freed from sin and have become a servant of God.\u201d Pauls is speaking to the people who are currently Christians. This is referring to a state of salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus. We used to have a different status before we became Christians. Verses 16-21 explain this. Verse 16 says that when we obey someone as servants, we become their servants. Thus, servants of sin follow sinful ways. Servants of sin are led by sin. They consider sin as their master and follow the sinful ways. The consequence of that is death. Before we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, we were servants of sin. However, we have become servants of obedience (v16). Paul says that we have now become obedient to the Word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In verse 17, Paul is thanking God because our life as servants of sin has ended. We have now been freed from our status as servants of sin. This is the result of obeying the gospel that comes from the Lord. We obeyed the gospel of the cross and the resurrection and the Lord\u2019s teachings. The result of that was forgiveness of sins and righteousness. Thus, we have escaped from the influence of sin and death. Sin can no longer act as our master. We no longer serve sin as our master. This is because we, who were once servants of sin, have become righteous through our faith in the Lord. We have now become servants of righteousness (v18). We now serve God\u2019s righteousness as our master. So we submit only to God. This is the life of obedience to the Lord. We now live a righteous life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verse 20 describes our past life. We were servants of sin before salvation. We were free from righteousness. Righteousness did not reign over us. We were not influenced by righteousness. We lived as servants of sin apart from righteousness. Verse 21 talks about the consequence of being servants of sin. At the time, we did not bear any fruit for God. Without fruit, we lived in darkness. We who have become servants of righteousness should feel ashamed about our past life as servants of sin. With a good, pure, and holy conscience given by the Lord, we should be ashamed of the sinful life. This is because the consequence of sin is death (v21).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verse 22 talks about our current status and the result. We are now freed from sin. We have escaped from the domain, influence, and power of sin. Sin cannot exert any influence on us. We have now died to sin and become alive to God (v11). A dead being has no life or activity. We who have died to sin must admit that we cannot do anything sinful. As such, we have been freed from sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, we have become servants of God. We now accept God as our Lord and King. Like Jesus, we must obey only God and the Lord\u2019s Word. The result of becoming God\u2019s servant and obeying the Word is holiness. Holiness is the will of God and imitation of God (1 Thessalonians 4:3). A life without holiness cannot bring about God\u2019s glory. Rather, it insults the Lord. Holiness is the result of becoming a servant of God. A life of faith and obedience that bears holy fruit brings eternal life (v22). Sin brings death. In order to attain eternal life and escape from the power of sin and death, we must obey the Lord by faith and live a holy life. We must distance ourselves from sin. We must approach God and serve and obey Him. This will bring us holiness and eternal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Verse 23 explains the end results of being a servant of sin versus a servant of God. We work to get compensated. We receive payment for our work. The payment for working as a servant of sin is death. Sin gives death to those who have served it. The end result of the work of a servant of sin is miserable and unfortunate. It leads to eternal death. However, when we obey God as servants of God, we receive a gift from God as a result. That gift is eternal life. To those who have sincerely served and obeyed Him, God gives eternal life as grace. We must serve the Lord with all our heart in order to receive that gift of eternal life. Like Jesus, we must obey all the Word of God with joy.
