(Romans 12:1-2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many types of service in church. There is Sunday service, Wednesday service, Early Morning service, Friday service, small group service, praise and worship, Dedication service, and so on. Church is a community of worship, a community of worshipers. Life of a worshiper is the life of a believer. There is no life of a believer where worship is absent. We must always worship God the Father. Today\u2019s passage is about spiritual worship. What is spiritual worship?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s passage says, \u201cTherefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God\u2019s mercy.\u201d It is critical to understand the meaning of this statement to understand today\u2019s passage. God is the God of all compassion (Psalms 103:8; 2 Corinthians 1:3). Compassion is in God\u2019s heart. His compassion is abundant and immeasurable. God&#8217;s compassion was shown in Christ of the Cross. The God of compassion did not repay our sins as we had deserved. If God were to repay us according to our sin, then there is no one on earth who would be saved. The God of all compassion sent his only Son Jesus Christ unsparingly for sinners. Jesus died on the cross for our sins. And God poured out his compassion by making his Son who is without sin to die for us. God cleansed our sins through the blood of the cross of his Son Jesus. Therefore, through God\u2019s compassion, we are able to come before the holy God and worship him. Paul is urging us with this compassion, with the love and gift of forgiveness that God gave us. Paul is urging us, who received the Lord\u2019s great gift of forgiveness, with God\u2019s compassion given us through our Lord Jesus Christ.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul says, \u201c&#8230;offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God\u2013this is your true and proper worship\u201d (v1).&nbsp; We who were clothed with God\u2019s compassion in Christ of the cross, who were cleansed and who were saved should offer ourselves as a living sacrifice holy and pleasing to God. God wants us as a holy and living sacrifice. <em>Sacrifice <\/em>originates from the Old Testament. Believers in the Old Testament offered animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats as sacrifice. They had to be without any blemish. God did not accept a sacrifice that had blemish. He accepted spotless and perfect sacrifice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, we must offer ourselves as a holy and living sacrifice to the holy God. Sacrifice in the Old Testament was animals. But sacrifice in the New Testament is a living one. Jesus offered himself as a holy and living sacrifice on the cross. The sacrifice we offer today is the living sacrifice. God enabled us who died in our sins and transgressions to receive forgiveness through the blood of the Lord\u2019s cross and be born again through the Holy Spirit. Thereby, he enables our spirits to live eternally. We worship the eternally living God through the living spirit. God is Spirit (John 4:24). God who is Spirit is pleased with and accepts worship of the Spirit and truth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, God makes us who received eternal life to live by his holy spirit and word. God is holy (Leviticus 19:2). God who is holy wants us, his children, to be holy because it is the will of God (1 Thessalonians 4:3). God wants our spirit and body to be without blemish and be holy. God joyfully accepts us, who have become holy, as a living sacrifice. For us to become holy, our spirit has to be holy. For our spirit to become holy, we must live by the Holy Spirit and the word of God. We ought to keep our body and spirit holy by living by the word of God. This is the spiritual worship offered to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verse 2 teaches us how to live as people who have become holy through the word of God. We who have become true worshipers by God\u2019s compassion and whom God accepts should not follow the ways of the world. We must not live like the people of this world. People who are of this world are unbelievers. They died in their sins and transgressions. They belong to darkness and are servants of the devil. As disobedient people, they displease God. However, we, as the people of faith, light, righteousness, of God, of Christ, and of holiness ought not to imitate this world that is polluted by sin. We must not live according to how the worldly people live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s passage advises us to \u201c&#8230;be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God\u2019s will is\u2013his good, pleasing and perfect will\u201d (2). We need just one thing for our mind to be renewed, transformed, and be able to distinguish God\u2019s will. It is to obey the holy word of God through the Holy Spirit. People cannot bring transformation and renewal to their mind through their strength, will or anything in this world. It is possible only when we live by the word of God just like Jesus. We have been renewed through the Holy Spirit and the word of God (John 3:5; 1 Corinthians 5:17). It is when we obey the Lord\u2019s word that our heart is renewed and transformed. And we come to discern God\u2019s good will. Discerning good and evil is possible through the spirit of the good Lord and his word. Moreover, we can distinguish God\u2019s pleasing will when we obey the word of God. The good word of God teaches us all the good things. Moreover, we are able to distinguish God\u2019s will by living in love. Love binds everything together is perfect unity (Colossians 3:14). The Lord\u2019s perfect will is love. When we live by the Holy Spirit, his word, and faith, we can discern God\u2019s good, pleasing and perfect will.
