Jesus, Apostle Paul persecuted the church. He knew the Scriptures very well, but did not know Jesus. However, after believing in Jesus, Paul knew Jesus well and was very devoted to him. Unbelief leads to incorrect knowledge of Jesus and results in opposition and persecution of Jesus. Faith, on the other hand, makes us know the Lord correctly. At the same time, it makes us live for the Lord. The unbelief of the Jews blinded them from recognizing Jesus as the Christ and led to persecution and execution of Jesus. It is the same today. Today\u2019s passage teaches us against the Jewish leaders\u2019 unbelief and their actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The high priests and the Pharisees sent the temple guards to arrest Jesus (v32). However, they did not arrest him. The high priests and the Pharisees ask them \u201cWhy did you not bring him?\u201d We have to remember that the high priests are the top leaders in Judaism. They have the responsibility to teach people and obey God\u2019s words. However, they acted the opposite. They tried to kill the Son of God, the Christ, about whom they were taught in the Scriptures. Why? The reason was that they did not believe in Jesus. Who are the Pharisees? Judaism consists of the Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, etc. The Pharisees were one of the sects. It is similar to how the Korean church is divided into presbyterian, methodist, baptist, etc. The representative Pharisee we know is Apostle Paul (Acts 23:6; Philippians 3:5). Pharisee means \u201cseparated one.\u201d They observed the Law and Jewish customs. However, they got into conflict with Jesus over observance of the Sabbath and other Jewish customs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pharisees tried to arrest Jesus, interrogate him, and execute him. This was the consequence of not believing in Jesus as the Messiah. They were supposed to be exemplary and believe in Jesus as the Savior and serve him. The tragedy of unbelief is here. They will be caught by God for their unbelief and the sin of killing the Messiah. They will stand before God and be judged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The temple guards answered, \u201cThere was no one who spoke like Jesus.\u201d What they said is correct. The words of Jesus are the words of God. The words of Jesus are the words of a Savior who has the power to save. The words of Jesus are joyful and good news. They are words of blessings that bless people. The words of Jesus are words of life that give eternal life to those who died by sin. The words of Jesus are holy words of truth. They make people holy and truthful. The words of Jesus are eternal words. Even if heaven and earth disappear, the Lord\u2019s words never will. The words of Jesus are righteous and pure. The words of the Lord make the minds and lives of people righteous and pure and have them stand before God. Moreover, the words of Jesus are the words with authority. They are different from those of the scribes. Jesus spoke with divinity as the Son of God. \u201cI am living bread from heaven\u201d (John 6:51). \u201cThose who believe in me have eternal life. I am the bread of life\u201d (John 6:47-48). \u201cI am the resurrection and the life\u201d (John 11:25). \u201cI am the way, the truth, and the life\u201d (John 14:6). Jesus spoke with the authority of God. There was no one who spoke like him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pharisees said, \u201cYou mean he has deceived you also?\u201d Here is an unfortunate situation. They were saying that believing in Jesus as the Christ was being deceived. This is the tragedy of unbelief. The fact is, not believing in Jesus as the Savior is being deceived. They did not realize that they themselves were being deceived. When one does not believe in Jesus, they do not recognize that they are being deceived. Believing in Jesus as the Savior is escaping deception. Unbelief makes us fall into deception and destruction. On the other hand, faith leads us to forgiveness of sins, salvation, and the path to eternity. Faith leads us to the way of truth. We must realize how blessed and beneficial it is to live by faith.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unbelief is putting oneself rather than Jesus at the center (v48). They talk among themselves that there is no one who believes in Jesus as the Christ. However, this cannot be the standard. Just because a person does not believe, that does not change the fact that Jesus is the Savior. For Jesus is the absolute standard. We believe in Jesus as our Savior and obey him, because there is no other standard of faith besides Jesus. Unbelief comes from not knowing Jesus and the Bible correctly. They assert that the people believe in Jesus because they do not know the law of Moses (v49). However, it is the opposite. The Pharisees do not believe Jesus, and therefore do not know the Law. By believing in Jesus Christ, we know the Law well and we escape the Lord\u2019s wrath, judgment, and destruction. We must understand the tragedy of unbelief. We must believe Jesus as Christ the Son of God. And we must read and learn the Bible with faith.
