\u00a0The One from Above<\/strong> (John 8:21-24)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moses was born in Egypt. He was the younger brother of Aaron and the second son. He was born in a place called Egypt, that is, on the earth. All people who live in this world are born on the earth. However, there is One whose birth is different from that of a human. He is Jesus. Today\u2019s passage talks about Jesus, whose birth is different from all humanity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus continues to speak to the Pharisees, \u201cI am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come\u201d (v21). Jesus will go away, meaning that he will leave the earth. Where is he going? All people come to the earth once and leave once. In other words, after they are born, they die once. Everyone dies with no exception. Abraham died, and so did Moses, David, and Paul. They had come to the world and left. Even to this day, many people are born and pass away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Likewise, Jesus came to the world, and he will leave. Where is Jesus, the Son of eternal God and life, going? He is going back to the Father who sent him. Jesus came because he was sent to the world by the Father. Jesus, who came to the world, lived by God\u2019s word and will. Therefore, he was crucified on the cross, was raised to life and ascended to heaven and is now sitting on the right hand of God. Jesus fulfilled the Father\u2019s will. Likewise, we who were saved by believing in Jesus as our Savior must obey the Lord\u2019s word and will. And thus, the Lord\u2019s will must be fulfilled through our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus tells the Jews, \u201c…you will look for me, and you will die in your sin.\u201d There is a correlation between sin and death. Why does a person die? It is because of sin. Sin destroys life and makes it die. Human death is a result of sin. Resolving sin is resolving death. Sin is resolved through faith in Jesus Christ. Sin is cleansed through the blood of the cross of Jesus. We who have received forgiveness of sins receive the power of resurrection. As a result, we escape sin and death and receive eternal life. If we do not believe in the Lord Jesus, we cannot escape the power of sin and death. The Jews did not believe in Jesus. As a result, they would have died in their sin. Those who do not believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior will die in sin. The Jews who died under the power of sin cannot go to where Jesus is going. Where is he going? He is going to the place where his Father is, that is, heaven. They cannot go to heaven. The Jews who did not believe and who were not saved will face destruction and end up in hell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Unbelief leads to ignorance. Without faith in the Lord, we cannot know Jesus, God, nor the gospel of salvation and the truth. Faith gives us the knowledge of Jesus and salvation that brings eternal life. The Jews did not understand the word of Jesus at all (v22). By \u201cgoing away,\u201d they think that Jesus will kill himself. This is the result of ignorance. Even now, those without faith do not understand Jesus and his words correctly. That is why we must listen to the Lord\u2019s words with faith. That is where we can find the way to understand Jesus\u2019 words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus said, \u201cYou are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world\u201d (v23). Jesus came from heaven. However, everyone including the Jews came from the earth. This reveals Jesus\u2019 divinity. Unlike the rest of the people, Jesus came to the world after having dwelt with God the Father. That is why Jesus belongs to heaven, not the world. Where do we belong? Those who have been saved through faith in Lord Jesus belong to Jesus. We belong to God the Father, the heaven, the truth, and the life in Jesus. Jesus said that those who are saved do not belong to the world just like Jesus (John 17:14).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus tells the Jews one more time that, if they don\u2019t believe in Jesus as the Christ the Savior, they will die in their sins (v24). If we do not believe in Jesus, we will live under the power of sin as slaves to sin. The consequence will be a second death. We will not be able to avoid the domain of hell. Unbelief brings eternal death, grief and pain. To go from a slave to sin to a slave to righteousness, we must believe in Jesus as the Savior. To escape the power of death that comes with sin, we must believe in the Lord of the cross and the resurrection. When we are saved by faith, we receive eternal life and eternal rest in heaven. We will enjoy eternal joy and rest in a place without death, sickness, grief, pain, or tears.
