8:31-36)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jews sinned against God and were taken to Babylon as captives. They lived in slavery under oppression. After seventy years, they were freed and returned to their country. They were filled with praise and laughter because they were overflowing with joy of emancipation and freedom. People by nature pursue freedom. No one likes to be oppressed or bound to something. Today\u2019s passage talks about true freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s passage, Jesus preaches to the Jews who believe in him. There were Jews who did not believe and those who did. The Twelve apostles, Paul, and many Jews are the believers in the Early Church. Now Jesus tells the believing Jews, \u201cIf you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free\u201d (v31-32). We must pay attention to his words. What kind of person is a Jesus\u2019 disciple? Jesus says that the true disciple is one who holds to his teaching. In other words, if we depart from his words, we are not his true disciples. Even though we go to church, worship, give praise, pray, or make offerings, we cannot become his disciples if we do not obey his words. If Jesus had worshiped the Father, prayed, and given praise but had not borne the cross, the will of God to save sinners would not have been fulfilled. Therefore, we must remember that Jesus\u2019 main point and emphasis is to obey his word, to put it into practice. Even if one claims to believe, if they do not listen to Jesus\u2019 word nor obey it, Jesus will not acknowledge them as his true disciple. Therefore, we must hold to and keep the teaching of Jesus, in whom we believe and serve. Such is the life of a true disciple.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We ought to keep Jesus\u2019 words in our heart. Jesus says that when we keep his word of truth, then we will know the truth. In other words, we cannot correctly know the words of Jesus without obedience. There is a distance between knowledge and practice. We know what it is like to drive by actually driving rather than having a theoretical knowledge. We are able to know Christ\u2019s will when we keep his word in our heart and put it into practice. Knowledge without practice is fruitless and can become meaningless. The truth that we put into practice sets us free. We are able to put his word into practice with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us remember the word and obey it. And obedience sets our heart, spirit, and life free. It enables us to escape worldly desires, passions and greed. For us to be freed from the power and oppression of sin, we must live according to Jesus\u2019 word, that is, the truth. Otherwise, the power of sin dominates us and can lead us to destruction. When we obey the truth, our Lord gives us true freedom in our hearts and lives. And we are able to enjoy grace, peace, joy, spiritual abundance and health, and all the spiritual blessings that our Lord gives us. Where obedience is, there is true freedom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus says that if we sin, we become slaves to sin. Sin is revealed when there is unbelief and disobedience. When we do not obey his word, sin rules over our minds and lives. Such people are slaves to sin, living according to sin. They are ultimately led to death (Romans 6:16-18). Our sins are washed and we receive righteousness through faith in our Lord Jesus. We receive salvation of righteousness and escape the power of sin and death. We receive freedom and liberty in the Lord (Romans 8:1-2). We become free when we live by the truth in the Holy Spirit through faith. When we do not believe in the Lord and we disobey, then there is no freedom. We must enjoy the freedom that our Lord gives. Therefore, we must obey our Lord and the truth. Life away from the truth has no freedom and is dangerous. We must take to heart the word of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus says that a slave has no permanent place in their master\u2019s family (v35). The slaves of sin cannot live where Jesus lives, the eternal home, in heaven. When Jesus of the cross and resurrection, the Son of God, sets us free, we receive freedom (v36). Jesus washed our sins away through the blood of his cross and freed us from death through the power of resurrection. We who escaped sin and death must live by Jesus\u2019 word. Then our Lord will enable us to enjoy freedom. People, who are sinners, have no freedom apart from Jesus, the Son of God, because they are under the power of sin and death. When people do not receive forgiveness of sins, there is no freedom. Jesus gives freedom to those who obey his word. We must live by the Spirit and word of our Lord. That is where freedom is. We are free in the Lord.
