Light is necessary for survival. Today\u2019s passage talks about the light of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus talks about time (v4). A time refers to a period. God created time. Time is under the power and governance of God. A person cannot control the time. We cannot stop time. We cannot control when we are born or when we die. Only God who controls the time determines it (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). A person cannot age however they want. No one can go back to a childhood, a past generation or a future generation. This is under the authority of God. As a creature, people are temporal beings. However, God who created all things exists eternally. Eternal God has the power to determine the time and period (Acts 1:7; Daniel 2:21).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says that it is day. There is a day time and night time. A full day consists of day and night. There is light during the day and darkness during the night. People usually work during the day when there is light. At night, people rest and sleep. A person cannot work for 24 hours straight. According to God\u2019s providence, people work during the day. Jesus says, \u201cAs long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work\u201d (v4). Jesus works too. Jesus does the work of God who sent him. Jesus did not come to do his own work. If a parent gives a child work, the child would do what the parent told them to do. Jesus came to the world to do the work of God the Father. We also were sent not to do our own work. We, who were saved through our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, were created to live for the Lord (Romans 14:7-9). A life of faith is one in which we do the work of God (John 6:29).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus did the work of God who sent him. That work involved preaching and teaching the Word of God. The work of God also involved healing the sick and the disabled, and&nbsp; performing miracles and power. The work Jesus did fulfilled the ministry of salvation through the cross. Thus, Jesus fulfilled the will of God. This is eternal life (John 6:40). Jesus gave us eternal life by doing the work of God. We must also live by faith and do the work of God. To live a life of faith today means to do the work of God. A person who does not live by faith does their own work. But those who live by faith will be compensated by the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says that when the night comes, no one will be able to work (v4). People usually stop working at night and rest. What night is Jesus and the Bible referring to? Night is a life without Jesus. Night refers to a life of unbelief, without faith in Jesus Christ. A person who does not believe belongs to the night. A person of faith belongs to the light. We are sons of light and sons of day (Thessalonians 5:5). We do not belong to the night or darkness. A life without faith in Jesus belongs to the night and is unrelated to the work of God. Thus, a life of unbelief does not have any compensation from God. Everything becomes a vain effort. There is only God\u2019s wrath and punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says, \u201cWhile I am in this world, I am the light of the world\u201d (v5). Jesus came as light. Jesus shone the light into the world of darkness. The world belongs to darkness. Before Jesus came, there was no light in this world. Darkness refers to sin, death, wickedness, and falsehood. Jesus shone the light of righteousness to the world full of sin of darkness. Jesus cleansed the sin through the blood of the cross and revealed the righteousness of God. The Lord shines the light of righteousness to those who believe. Jesus shone the light of life to us who died due to our sin. Jesus gave us eternal life through the power of the crucifixion and resurrection. We who have received the life of the Lord belong to the day and live in light. Jesus shone the light of goodness to the evil world of darkness. All the ministry of Jesus is good. By believing in Jesus who is good, we receive the light of goodness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By doing good, we also shine the light of goodness. We must obey the word of the Lord who is good. A life of obedience is one that shines the light of goodness. It is a life in which we do the work of God during the day. Jesus was sent by God and came to the world. Jesus who came to the world did the work of God. The work was to shine the light into the world. When we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ who is the light and obey him, we dwell in the light. As a result, we also do the work of the Lord and shine the light to the world. We receive life through faith and live a righteous, good and truthful life, shining the light to the world.
