People were panicking because they did not know the cause. But one person appeared calmly and treated the man. Who was the man? He was a doctor. Today\u2019s passage is a teaching about Jesus the Messiah who healed a blind man. Jesus healed a blind man on a Sabbath. Did Jesus break the Sabbath or not? Such a dispute emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People brought the blind man, whose eyes were opened, to the Pharisees. The Pharisees were people who did not believe in Jesus and confronted and persecuted him. The fact that the people brought the blind man to the Pharisees was not a good thing. The Pharisees were likely to persecute Jesus through this. The day that Jesus healed the blind man was a Sabbath. The Pharisees asked the blind man how his eyes were opened. The blind man told the truth. The Pharisees were more focused on the fact that it was a Sabbath than the fact that a blind man was healed. They were not interested in the fact that the blind man was healed and saved through God\u2019s grace. They did not care about the grace, love and mercy shown by Jesus. Depending on what our mind is set on, our perspectives change. When one puts their mind on money, they even take other\u2019s life lightly. When one seeks their own good first, they even fail to obey the law. The Pharisees had their thoughts on keeping the Sabbath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So there was a dispute between the Pharisees and Jesus about Sabbath. The core question was: What does it mean to keep the Sabbath? In John chapter 5, Jesus healed on a Sabbath a man crippled for 38 years. Jesus\u2019 ministry of healing occurred on Sabbaths. The Pharisees persecuted Jesus and accused him of breaking the Sabbath. The Pharisees thought a Sabbath was a day that they simply rest. They believed that they should do no work whatsoever on a Sabbath. However, Jesus thought that doing good and saving lives was keeping the Sabbath. Whose interpretation is correct? Of course, Jesus\u2019 interpretation is correct. The Pharisees were those who participate in and keep the Sabbath, but Jesus was the Lord of Sabbath. A lord has ownership over what they own. They are able to use what they own however they like. Jesus is able to keep the Sabbath however he likes. Thus, healing on a Sabbath is a proper keeping of Sabbath. We must remember that the Lord Jesus Christ, in whom we believe, is the absolute standard of our thoughts and actions. Anything that deviates from Christ and the Word is improper. Thus, we must base our thoughts and judgment on the Lord and his Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pharisees believed that Jesus is not from God because Jesus broke the Sabbath. On the other hand, some Pharisees argued that a sinner cannot open the eyes of a blind. They were in conflict with one another. Even today, when people have differing opinions within a Congregation, there is conflict. There are conflicts between church members or between denominations. We must have the same faith and mind towards Lord Jesus. Thus, a church must become one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verse 17 is a question about who the blind man thinks Jesus is. Who is Jesus? Today, we are given this question. Jesus says, \u201cWhoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven\u201d (Matthew 10:32). We believe and confess that Jesus of the cross and the resurrection and the Son of God is Christ. Jesus will too acknowledge us before God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pharisees did not believe that the blind man was healed. So they called his parents to confirm (John 9:18-33). The blind man\u2019s parents said that the man who was healed is their son. However, the parents did not say that Jesus healed the son because they feared the Pharisees\u2019 persecution. The Pharisees persecuted those who claimed Jesus to be Christ (John 9:22). They did not believe in Jesus but considered him a sinner (John 9:24). They persecuted Jesus and condemned him. They were sinning greatly. The blind man however believed that Jesus who opened his eyes was the true prophet from God (John 9:30-33). God listens to the prayer and words of righteous and godly people. God listened to Jesus and healed the blind man. When we also obey in faith and live righteous and godly lives, God hears our prayers. Sin is a barrier to prayer being answered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pharisees claimed that God spoke through Moses. However, they did not know where Jesus came from. This is a contradiction. God spoke to Moses about Jesus. If they knew Moses, they should also know Jesus. They did not believe in Jesus nor Moses. There is a tragedy in unbelief. The tragedy is that they themselves cannot believe and they prevent others from believing. Faith is a way to righteousness, salvation, and life.
