their home and walks in. This is possible because the home is their possession. However, there is someone who climbs over the fence at night. Why is that? It is because they are thieves and they enter through a place that is not the main entrance to steal. Today\u2019s passage teaches about the gate for the sheep. What does the <em>gate for the sheep <\/em>refer to?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus, who is the truth and is truthful, the One in whom everyone can put their trust, gives us the teachings of life. There is a sheep pen. But there are people who do not enter through the gate. They should enter through the gate but they do not. There are those who climb over the fence instead. Jesus says that they climb in because they are a thief and a robber (v.1). The owner does not climb in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus says that the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd (v.2). The shepherd enters through the gate. There is no reason for him to enter by any other way. The gatekeeper opens the gate for the shepherd. The sheep listen to his voice because they recognize it. The shepherd leads them by calling them by their names (v.3). The shepherd knows his sheep. Therefore, he calls them by their names. He leads them and goes before them. And the sheep recognizes the shepherd\u2019s voice, listening and following him (v.5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus is the shepherd of the sheep (v.11, 15). We are Jesus\u2019 sheep. We recognize his voice and we listen to him and obey. This is the evidence that we are the sheep of Jesus, the shepherd: that we listen to his word and obey him. Not listening to his word or disobeying him reveals that they are not the Lord\u2019s sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus says that the sheep does not know the voice of people other than that of the shepherd. Therefore, he says that the sheep does not follow strangers but runs away from them. We must remember that we, the Lord\u2019s sheep, should not accept words other than those of Jesus. We must not listen to the people of this world and follow them. We should listen to Jesus, our shepherd, following him only. We should avoid anything that is not Jesus\u2019 words because they do us harm. The words of this world make us deviate from the words of Jesus. They tempt us and inflict harm on our lives and faith.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disciples did not understand his word (v.6). Therefore, Jesus explains to them using a figure of speech (v.7-9). Jesus says, \u201cI am the gate for the sheep\u201d (v.7). He is the gate through which the sheep enters and leaves. The sheep enters the sheep pen through the gate. We are saved through Jesus, who is the gate, and enter heaven. We cannot be saved without believing in Jesus of the cross and resurrection, the gate for the sheep. There is no way to be saved except through Jesus. Entering through any way that is not the gate does not lead to deliverance. Only Jesus is the gate for the sheep. Other people and other religions are not the gate. There is no forgiveness of sins or deliverance in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus says that those who come before him are all thieves and robbers, and the sheep did not listen to them. The sheep listen to the shepherd\u2019s voice. The sheep does not recognize the voice of thieves or robbers. Therefore, they do not listen to them. The false prophets and the leaders of other religions who came before Jesus are thieves and robbers. They are not the gate nor the shepherd of the sheep. Their words are not the truth. They are not able to save people. They do not have power to save the sheep from sin and death. Therefore, the sheep do not follow them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus says, \u201cI am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture\u201d (v.9). The only gate through which people should enter to be saved is Jesus. Jesus is the only way to receive forgiveness of sins. Believing in Jesus is the way to escape death and live eternally. We must believe in Jesus the Son of God as the Savior to receive eternal life. The sheep need pasture to feed on. We, the sheep, are led to the pasture by listening to the word of the Lord and obeying him. We gain the food of life through faith. The food for the sheep is Jesus\u2019 flesh and blood (John 6:53-58). The flesh and blood of Jesus give us eternal life. We eat his flesh and drink his blood through faith. Therefore, we receive eternal life through faith. We must listen to the words of Jesus, the Shepherd, and obey him. Then we will receive the food of life from our Lord Jesus. Jesus gives the sheep their food through the Bible, his words. Thus, we should make every effort to read the Bible, learn from it, and obey it.
