Commandment<\/strong> (John 13:31-35)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God gave the law to the Israelites. The prophets of the Old Testament taught people to keep the law. The Old Testament was given to the Jews. It was fulfilled through Jesus Christ. The gospel, which was fulfilled through Christ, is for all people. Today\u2019s passage talks about the new command that Jesus, who fulfilled the Old Testament, that is, the Law and the Prophets, is giving to the disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Judas Iscariot heard what Jesus said and left the place (v.31). Then Jesus said that he is Christ the Lord, the Son of God. He came to the world according to the Scriptures. Jesus lived, died, and resurrected according to the Bible. And thus, Jesus fulfilled the will of the Father. Jesus knew that the time had come to fulfill His will. Judas Iscariot sold Jesus for money. He did an evil thing. However, Jesus knew that Judas\u2019 betrayal was the way to fulfill God\u2019s word and will. Jesus\u2019 purpose for coming to the world was to fulfill the will of the Father who sent him. His will was forgiveness of sin and eternal life. Judas\u2019 betrayal eventually led Jesus to die on the cross. The cross is the cross of forgiveness. Jesus\u2019 purpose for coming to the world was to wash away people\u2019s sins and save them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus knew that Judas\u2019 betrayal by handing him over was the way to fulfill God\u2019s will and redemption. So he says. \u201cNow the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him\u201d (v.31). Jesus\u2019 cross and resurrection are the way for God to be glorified. Jesus fulfilled the will of the Father through cross and resurrection. Therefore, he received glory from God and people. If Jesus had not died on the cross, God\u2019s word and will would not have been fulfilled. As a result, we would not have salvation nor eternal life. And Jesus would not have received glory. However, Jesus was glorified through the obedience of the cross. Jesus, who fulfilled the Father\u2019s will, glorified him (Philippians 2:8-11). The Father was glorified through the Son, Jesus Christ. Therefore, God gave glory to his Son Jesus Christ (v.32). Eventually, the Son glorified the Father and the Father glorified the Son. When we glorify our Lord, then the Lord glorifies us. To receive glory from the Lord, we should glorify him. When we obey the word of the Lord, the Father and our Lord Jesus receive glory. And God makes us receive glory with the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus was leaving the disciples in a little while. He fulfilled the Father\u2019s will and his calling, and he was leaving the world to return to the Father. Where Jesus was going, the Jews could not follow (v.33). Jesus fulfilled the Father\u2019s will and gave his disciples a new command. This new command was what the disciples had to keep. This command is what we the believers and those who have been saved must abide by. The new command has been given to the Christians who are in the church. We must keep the new command the Lord gave us. What is the new command that Jesus, who is the head of the church and our Savior, has given us? It is to love one another. Jesus tells the disciples, \u201cA new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another\u201d (v.34).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are Jesus\u2019 disciples. And the disciples are a one body community. We are one in Christ. We are God the Father\u2019s children. We are brothers and sisters in the Lord. We are a family community of the Father. Therefore, we must love one another according to the command given by the Lord. Jesus wants the children of God, whom he redeemed through his own blood, to love one another. It is the same as how parents want their children, whom they gave birth to and raised, to love each other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How must we love? We must love as Jesus loved us. We must love one another as the Savior, the Son of God, loved us. The standard of love is that of Jesus. Jesus says, \u201cI am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep\u201d (John 10:11). We must remember that Jesus the good shepherd laid down his life for us, his sheep. As Jesus forsook his life to save us sinners, we must love one another. Apostle John says, \u201cThis is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters\u201d (1 John 3:16). It is clear that Jesus gave up his life. We must love our brothers and sisters as Jesus loved us. We must love, even to the point of laying down our life, for our brothers and sisters. This is Jesus\u2019 new command. There is nothing more precious than life. And we must love our brothers and sisters by giving the most precious things. Just as the First Church did, we should share our possessions and precious things with brothers and sisters. For that is the new command the Lord gave us. Jesus laid down his life, the most precious thing, for us. And we ought to love like Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we love one another just like Jesus, all people will know that we are his disciples. For we would love one another just as Jesus did. As Jesus\u2019 disciples, we must follow the example of Jesus. And we must testify about Jesus. If we do not love one another as the Lord has done, people will not know that we are his disciples. Let us obey the new command, loving one another as Jesus has loved us.
